As they collectively fumbled to decode some handwriting on one of the now several speeches, the camera cut away. They kept going. The stage lights switched off."

Without looking at the list, curious if they included the Hearts and Minds acceptance speech in '75 or whenever. Will check the link.

Faulty memory. I looked at the clip, and not nearly as incendiary as my 45-year-old memory of it. I thought there was loud booing, like with Michael Moore. Not at all; the crowd sounds quite on their side. I think, later, there may have been someone speak disparagingly from the stage about Schneider--Bob Hope or John Wayne?--but I'm not sure.

this was always going to be awkward and boring but they've really outdone themselves!

That 'talking to the nominees from the stage' thing sucked ten years ago, God knows who thought they should revive it.

Those introductions from Laura Dern to the supporting actors! Is that what you are referring to? Every acceptance speech other than Zhao's has been ridiculously long too.

I liked that they presented the best director award so close to the beginning, Chloe Zhao totally deserved it and she gave an admirably short acceptance speech

re Octopus it's nice, I liked it a lot and there is a lot of beautiful underwater photography but the anthropomorphizing is kind over the top

Blade runner was one of the first movies where ford didn't even try to act and just read off his lines. It needed different cuts to work around his shit performance.

Didn't need a speech about tolerance from the gay homophobe. Especially not one decrying intolerance towards cops.

Glenn Close's monologue on "Da Butt" is her most moving screen performance since 1988.

Just imagine, if we hadn't had the Questlove music quiz come of these dead people may have got more than a fraction of a second of commemoration. Some of them disappeared so fast you didn't have the chance to read the name.

every year prior to this had at least 3 extended bits that were worse than the song trivia

Glen Close dropping knowledge about da butt was the highlight of the show, fuiud

they ended it with actress and actor just because they thought boseman was a lock. good moment nonetheless.

So...Boseman doesn't get the tribute he deserves, Hopkins doesn't get the kudos that courtesy demands, and the ceremony just wilts

pitiful. apparently steven soderbergh was the mastermind behind this.

thought the surprises in best actress and best actor at the end were worth hsnging around for though. and Frances McDormands' howl. don't remember a year like this

boseman is dead, hopkins wasn't interested in attending, and the voters voted. having it last was a mistake but otherwise what are you gonna do.

i think soderbergh made a valiant attempt to sort of human scale the ceremony and i certainly didn't miss the endless clips, prerecorded bits, comedians, and song performances. i think he wanted to make it about people talking about movies, and have the presenters be in dialog with the nominees in some capacity. i'm not going to tell you it worked but at the same time this show is subjected to withering criticism every single year and i don't have the slightest idea what people actually want it to be.
