I've no recollection of this

"Possibly the least showy moment on this list, but easily the most excruciating. The Vice hair and makeup team didn’t seem to know each other when they arrived onstage to collect their award. One of them started a speech, then stopped as his colleague unfurled her own speech. She ordered him to read it. He refused. She started reading it. A third winner, holding her own speech, haltingly joined in. They started to get played off, but ploughed on nonetheless. As they collectively fumbled to decode some handwriting on one of the now several speeches, the camera cut away. They kept going. The stage lights switched off."

Without looking at the list, curious if they included the Hearts and Minds acceptance speech in '75 or whenever. Will check the link.

They didn’t, too niche i expect.

They don't have Benigni climbing over people or the lady from Once getting cut off either.

Oh, and "Uma...Oprah"!

blue whales on ambient (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 April 2021 22:52 (three years ago) link

There's nothing embarrassing about that Jack Palance acceptance, it's great

Faulty memory. I looked at the clip, and not nearly as incendiary as my 45-year-old memory of it. I thought there was loud booing, like with Michael Moore. Not at all; the crowd sounds quite on their side. I think, later, there may have been someone speak disparagingly from the stage about Schneider--Bob Hope or John Wayne?--but I'm not sure.

Canned laughter?? taking a cue from the Brits there.

Isn't best supporting actor usually first?

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 00:09 (three years ago) link

this was always going to be awkward and boring but they've really outdone themselves!

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:01 (three years ago) link

That 'talking to the nominees from the stage' thing sucked ten years ago, God knows who thought they should revive it.

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 01:06 (three years ago) link

Those introductions from Laura Dern to the supporting actors! Is that what you are referring to? Every acceptance speech other than Zhao's has been ridiculously long too.

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:11 (three years ago) link

Sorry, I'm only half watching but thanks for the link-up, piscesx.

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:12 (three years ago) link

I liked that they presented the best director award so close to the beginning, Chloe Zhao totally deserved it and she gave an admirably short acceptance speech

Dan S, Monday, 26 April 2021 01:12 (three years ago) link

i started this half and hour or so late so i could ffwd through commercials and endless sanctimony and boring shit i'm already out of buffer

Clay, Monday, 26 April 2021 01:13 (three years ago) link

lol

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:19 (three years ago) link

Reece never ages, it's incredible.

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:20 (three years ago) link

Denzel Washington and Laura Dern don't either.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:22 (three years ago) link

Laura looked gorgeous. Have we had best supporting actress?

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:24 (three years ago) link

i don't think so

call all destroyer, Monday, 26 April 2021 01:34 (three years ago) link

Woah that Octopus film looks great. That's a sentence i never thought i'd write.

xp No Supporting Actress yet.

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 01:46 (three years ago) link

If Glenn Close doesn't win she makes history as the most nominated actor *ever* to not win.

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 01:50 (three years ago) link

Peter O'Toole will join her for a drink.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:53 (three years ago) link

re Octopus it's nice, I liked it a lot and there is a lot of beautiful underwater photography but the anthropomorphizing is kind over the top

Dan S, Monday, 26 April 2021 01:54 (three years ago) link

they should let youn yuh-jong do the rest of the speeches

Clay, Monday, 26 April 2021 02:05 (three years ago) link

Love that Harrison Ford read the blade runner notes

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Monday, 26 April 2021 02:19 (three years ago) link

Anyone else think Sound of Metal will win best picture?

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 02:20 (three years ago) link

Blade runner was one of the first movies where ford didn't even try to act and just read off his lines. It needed different cuts to work around his shit performance.

wasdnuos (abanana), Monday, 26 April 2021 02:23 (three years ago) link

Didn't need a speech about tolerance from the gay homophobe. Especially not one decrying intolerance towards cops.

wasdnuos (abanana), Monday, 26 April 2021 02:34 (three years ago) link

Glenn Close's monologue on "Da Butt" is her most moving screen performance since 1988.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 April 2021 02:49 (three years ago) link

Just imagine, if we hadn't had the Questlove music quiz come of these dead people may have got more than a fraction of a second of commemoration. Some of them disappeared so fast you didn't have the chance to read the name.

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 02:59 (three years ago) link

what? best picture now?

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 03:01 (three years ago) link

who's the 'gay homophobe'?

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:09 (three years ago) link

Tyler Perry, allegedly.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 April 2021 03:10 (three years ago) link

this is a fucking mess of a production. the sound is terrible. no clips? what was that ten minute torturous guess if the song won an oscar game? Questlove's DJing is bad, bad, bad, utterly context-free songs from 'movies' disconnected from everything...

akm, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:11 (three years ago) link

in memorium rushed through with an upbeat stevie wonder song, with only Boseman and Connery getting more than a fraction of a second

akm, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:12 (three years ago) link

xp ah gotcha.

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:13 (three years ago) link

christ this is the most painful idea.. kill it with fire.

every year prior to this had at least 3 extended bits that were worse than the song trivia

call all destroyer, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:16 (three years ago) link

oof that's an upset! Hopkins not even there!?

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:17 (three years ago) link

not there, thanks, goodnight, the end.

akm, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:17 (three years ago) link

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 April 2021 03:18 (three years ago) link

Glen Close dropping knowledge about da butt was the highlight of the show, fuiud

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Monday, 26 April 2021 03:19 (three years ago) link

they ended it with actress and actor just because they thought boseman was a lock. good moment nonetheless.

wasdnuos (abanana), Monday, 26 April 2021 03:20 (three years ago) link

So...Boseman doesn't get the tribute he deserves, Hopkins doesn't get the kudos that courtesy demands, and the ceremony just wilts

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 April 2021 03:25 (three years ago) link

pitiful. apparently steven soderbergh was the mastermind behind this.

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 03:29 (three years ago) link

thought the surprises in best actress and best actor at the end were worth hsnging around for though. and Frances McDormands' howl. don't remember a year like this

Dan S, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:34 (three years ago) link

boseman is dead, hopkins wasn't interested in attending, and the voters voted. having it last was a mistake but otherwise what are you gonna do.

call all destroyer, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:35 (three years ago) link

i think soderbergh made a valiant attempt to sort of human scale the ceremony and i certainly didn't miss the endless clips, prerecorded bits, comedians, and song performances. i think he wanted to make it about people talking about movies, and have the presenters be in dialog with the nominees in some capacity. i'm not going to tell you it worked but at the same time this show is subjected to withering criticism every single year and i don't have the slightest idea what people actually want it to be.
