Must be an irreplaceable tone, because all she appears to sing is "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa".

Dreams Beds proudly sponsors nights on 5USA.

cue family, two small kids, hunkering down in bed to watch TV.

this just before an episode of Special Victims Unit where a boy is sexually abused by his father and shoots up a school.

maybe they should rethink

There is an ad for Seat featuring a Mumford & Sons style cover of Walk On The Wild Side which makes me slightly mortified that I drive a Seat.

language problems aside, would anyone in 79ad ever refer to the date as 79ad?

koogs, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 16:56 (two years ago) link

Plusnet is the new 118 118 in the sense of having an interminable long-running series of adverts that were shit as an idea and have been shit in practice from the very first one to the latest one and can't they just stop?

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:04 (two years ago) link

79AD was meaningless in 79AD but more importantly that lad is a cunt

No real human being has ever used the phrase "that's a low price"

Chickpeas, Scamps and Beeves (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 19:01 (two years ago) link

Re 79AD, yep I say that every time!

Also, if you whisper a question to Alexa, does she whisper the answer back to you?

I could try it, but... cbb.

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 19:11 (two years ago) link

> No real human being has ever used the phrase "that's a low price"

there's another one where someone asks about a neighbour's security camera by make, and that's similarly unnatural.

It might be considered disproportionate to wish a violent death on you Matt Berry so I'll confine myself to hoping you lose your vocal cords gently but suddenly and forever

Why does google advertise? Everyone knows what it is, everyone uses it. It just feels like rubbing it in.

this Verisure advert is absolute god tier

Take me home, Jordan Rhodes (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 3 July 2021 08:44 (two years ago) link

the dinner party one is slightly more natural than the two guys on the doorstep one i alluded to upthread. but only slightly.

"you should, it'll make you feel really safe"
"i'm gonna do it right now"
"nice one"

koogs, Saturday, 3 July 2021 11:34 (two years ago) link

the dinner party one is very not natural unless there are circles i've been lucky not to move in

don't think it's going on anybody's showreel

Take me home, Jordan Rhodes (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 3 July 2021 12:09 (two years ago) link

Yes, the (silent) acting by the men in the dinner party one is absolutely abysmal.

so, new macd's advert has I Think We're Alone Now in it.

virg advert has 99 Red Balloons

i heard Snap yesterday on something

there's also a p power ad with dogs yapping to, of all thing, Nu Shooz' I Can't Wait.

things they can licence cheaply? all the current ad execs grew up in the 80s? can't decide.

(oh, apple using delta five as well)

koogs, Wednesday, 7 July 2021 19:58 (two years ago) link

that last one slightly different, i guess

virg advert has 99 Red Balloons

I have espoused the theory that Virgin's use of 99 Red Balloons is a secret signal that Branson is working on nuclear weaponry.

worst thing about tv adverts at the moment: the streaming services where if you're watching in a browser and you switch to another tab, it pauses the ads.

Oh, and I don't listen to "commercial radio" much, but when I do, I hear Dermot et al doing the "termsandconditionsapply" speedlearn at the end of every advert...

Mark G, Thursday, 15 July 2021 10:52 (two years ago) link

My partner has commercial radio on in the car and they make me want to die. Like, would saying "termsandconditionsapply" not suffice? Some of then seem to go on for minutes

ignore the blue line (or something), Thursday, 15 July 2021 10:56 (two years ago) link

I think my least favourite genre are the insurance/saving/whatever ads which depict rapid stepwise aging of the protagonists. Aw, your little toddler is having kids of her own now, THINK ABOUT THAT, and here is your 65yo future self enigmatically thanking you on your doorstep for yr recent prudent financial decisions and then vanishing back into their timeline. There should be a TW for all of that content.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 15 July 2021 12:37 (two years ago) link

ads which depict rapid stepwise aging of the protagonists

I'm sure I've mentioned these itt before. I hate them, or rather I hate the fact that advertisers keep making them because someone had the idea for them once and might have produced a good one, but copying and stealing ideas from each other is what ad agencies do.

Wouldn't disgrace a Michael Jackson (Tom D.), Thursday, 15 July 2021 15:50 (two years ago) link

I just did a search, just to see how long we've been sick of this sort of ad... and you were already sick of it in 2017 :) Eventually child actors from the first wave of these inter-generational future-shock ads will be able to play their own parents in... oh forget it.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 15 July 2021 16:09 (two years ago) link

I think this was probably mentioned already but the car ornament singing Pet Shop Boys.

billstevejim, Thursday, 15 July 2021 18:32 (two years ago) link

nobody's singled out the Just Eat adverts with the voiceover that sounds like a phone-line option menu yet.

koogs, Friday, 16 July 2021 16:28 (two years ago) link

Still far too many adverts with 'ordinary people' singing - out of tune, out of time etc, because obviously no ordinary person can sing.

Wouldn't disgrace a Michael Jackson (Tom D.), Friday, 16 July 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

I think I might be late to this one, but our Hulu has suddenly been inundated with that awful LG ad using the Ol Dirty Bastard song, but with people singing along, "baby I got your laundry". As egregious as the Bourdain AI voice, imo.

koogs, Saturday, 17 July 2021 19:36 (two years ago) link

currently getting an almost fullhouse of terrible adverts in every break in episodes of SVU.

whiney kids trying to shame us 'dults on climate change whilst being co-founded by 'hobby-astronaut' bezos

diesel mis-selling (the new PPI)

horrible baby with a man's voice selling insurance

halifax ad with whiney oasis soundtrack

ubiquitous meerkats

ade edmundson trapped in the body of a dog

koogs, Thursday, 22 July 2021 10:33 (two years ago) link

Yes to all of those but especially the obnoxious brats lecturing us on climate change, makes me want drive a coal powered SUV made entirely of non-degradable plastic. A new Verisure advert has appeared btw.

MoMsnet (calzino), Thursday, 22 July 2021 10:58 (two years ago) link

Inevitably, because ad agencies have never come across an idea they didn't think was worth flogging to death, there is now virtually a subgenre of irritating eco-kids adverts

talk talk advert is pretty terrible terrible.

*and* the one with the suits you overcharging waiter.

i remember a time when there were interesting adverts, there's a companion thread for that, but it never gets bumped.

Channel 4 playing their Paralympics advert in every single break is driving me nuts tbh.

i like it but it's a long old thing

"it was designed to improve brushing. it ended up changing: everything". no, it didn't, it's still only a toothbrush.

current toyota ad has a virtual car that it says isn't available to buy. so is that an advert or a political statement? ditto the whiney eco-kids.

koogs, Monday, 9 August 2021 10:18 (two years ago) link

I've got no problem with the Paralympics ad I just don't need to see it - and hear it - every 15 minutes.

The kid who takes a cake from the party, back for his sister.

I mean, it's been on for two years now, every crummy day!

What kind of advertising budgie do Mr Kipling have? Did somebody book a series insert, accidentally book it for five years, then quit?

Mark G, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 09:49 (two years ago) link

That's his sister? I couldn't work it out. Also the fact that he's a slightly weird and creepy looking young boy is only emphasized by the fact that he appears to be wearing some kind of Star Trek uniform.
