2)Rockism ideology to me takes away from the numerous forms of renaissance like genres of music today. It does not just pertain to rock and roll music but all forms of music. Music such as underground hip hop that can still achieve an originality to its music and do something different enough to catch your interest and reach popularity, embodies what rockism is against which is important. Hip Hop is able to sample music, similar to rock bands using synthesizers, and make good music. Despite the fact that they are not creating their own original scores or instumental sounds. Although there is nothing wrong with wanting to have music that follows rockism there needs to be music that does not in order to keep a balance. Sometimes music needs to follow a rockism path because sometimes the real instrumentals are distorted and ruined by use of all these new technological instruments and computers. In the end rockism is a great way to model music but music that does not can be just as entertaining.

4) I am not huge fan of sufjan stevens. I have tried to listen to his music numerous times and can never find something that really grabs my attention. Although i do not find the music of sufjan to be intolerable, i find it perfectly fine to listen but with me it just does not click. Deerhoof on the other hand i find to be a very good and entertaining band. I was lucky enough to see them at coachella and it was great. Their music is very catchy at times and can be relaxing for me as well. Usually anything that puts me at ease and can make me zone out for a little while is always welcomed by me and deerhoof does just that. With that said I am a much bigger fan of deerhoof than I am sufjan stevens soley based on connection not genre.

5) I only request one invite, thanks.

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
The central tenet of rockism is that authenticity is the (or at least a) key indicator of the quality of a piece of music/artist/genre/etc. (Leaving the difficulty of defining authenticity aside) I think that's rather silly. Take the blues for example. Robert Johnson's music is a more authentic take on the blues than Kenny Wayne Shepherd's because Johnson is black, from the Delta and long dead and Shepherd is a young white kid with long hair. Johnson's music is better than Shepherd's, but why? Well, the easy answer is because Johnson is authentic and Shepherd is not. But that is intellectually lazy. If you can't come up with a better reason than that to explain why Johnson is better than Shepherd you should turn in your rock critic card right now. Extend this argument and you get that rockism is just an intellectually lazy way to justify liking Prince but not Justin Timberlake.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
I like Deerhoof better. I enjoy the music of both, to an extent. When I'm listening to it, I like it. I sometimes buy their CDs. But I rarely, if ever, find myself thinking "Hey, I should put on some Deerhoof/Sufjan Stevens right now". Their music doesn't stick with me. However, I find Deerhoof a rather fascinating band from an intellectual standpoint. I'm much more likely to end up thinking about Deerhoof than listening to them, but that's more than I can say about Sufjan. I never think about Sufjan. Even Sufjan's worst stuff is vaguely pleasant, which is a large par of the problem for me. When Deerhoof fuck up, it's always in an interesting way. Like the last track on their new album. It sucks, but at least it's not boring.

Also I hate the Jesus.

2) What is rockism?
I don't know if I'd call myself a rockist, I'm definitely more comfortable in the company of Peridotites and other Igneous types like myself, but I dated a shalestone in college.

Or....

If you can play it live, without loops, samples etc., and it's basically a 12 bar blues structure, it fits the tenets of Rockism.
For example, Beatles before Sgt. Peppers, Pink Floyd before The Man and the Journey = Rockism.
After said albums = not Rockism.
Oddly enough, Rage Against the Machine is 100% Rockist.
Thus the theory of Rockism.
This sentence is padding.
This is the eighth sentence.

Yeah, I know, Ed from Arkansas beat me to the joke, but I spent a good twenty minutes Googling the best Cat Power pic that I could find and I ain't starting over....besides, all the good REAL ones have been used.

4)I wouldn't know Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof if they collectively bit me in the ass.
Sorry, just not my thing, but I'll choose Deerhoof, just because it's a cool name.
Since I have nothing to say on this subject and I don't think you really care about my musical tastes I'll have to come up with something better to say that'll make me invite worthy.
I've got a 1.10 share at Demonoid with over 330gb uploaded in the last six months, my computer is always on, Azureus and Peerguardian are always running and there's an entire 120gb HD on this machine dedicated solely to seeding torrents.
Right now I'm seeding 85gb in 112 separate torrents, the oldest going all the way back to November '06, basically, I seed until the peers dry up.

I wouldn't know Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof if they collectively bit me in the ass.
Sorry, just not my thing, but I'll choose Deerhoof, just because it's a cool name.

Just out of interest, I decided to have a listen and it turns out that I actually would know Deerhoof if they bit me on the ass, I've seen them play a couple of times, just forgot their name.
So who's better?
Well, Sufjan, after a very brief cursory listen, sounds like Sam Beam on acid, so I dunno, is that a good thing?
Deerhoof, they sound like every single one of my friend's bands.
I ain't kidding, every time it's the same thing, "come see us play, we're like nothing else, totally original"...uh-huh.
Since it's been so long since I saw Deerhoof, they must be really old (like me) and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then they win on influence alone.

See what I did there?
I have no f'ing clue what I'm talking about, but I came up with an opinion anyways, and I'm sticking with it.....USA! USA ! USA!

1) Gym Class Heroes - as Cruel as school children, Mark Ronson - Version, GTA Vice City Soundtrack

2) I must admit i had never heard of the term rockism until now, but i was actually familiar with the concept despite not knowing it's name. My music taste is predominantly of the hip-hop variety, so i often hear a lot of "it all sounds the same" and so on, basically dismissing it's originality in comparison to other music genres. Rockism seems to glorify "pure" music for lack of a better term. By pure music i mean that which is produced by conventional instruments and not aided by or indeed created entirely by modern technology. Hip-hop is a genre where this is common, and indeed the blatant use of older material is incorporated in many songs, and i think this sort of music is what goes against the concept of rockism. To me though i don't think it deters from the creativity of the artists in question, music is music to me no matter what instrument it's made with. I feel i've answered "do you agree with rockism" more than "what is rockism" here so hopefully it all ties in!

3) http://media.collegepublisher.com/media/paper344/stills/1m73o811.jpg

4) I'm not even going to pretend i know what i'm talking about here. I'm sure you can let me off researching both artists, and as i expected both are from America and as far as i know have yet to really make any impact over here. Perhaps they have made some sort of an impact to dedicated fans of minimalist music but as a follower of a very different genre i've failed to notice either of them. During my research i came across the fact that quite a number of Stevens' tracks have been featured on The OC. While i don't like to stereotype, i get a sort of image in my head now of the style of music he has (it's worth mentioning i'm trying to answer this without listening to either in advance, then checking to see if my assumptions were correct). Stevens seems to appeal to me more purely for the fact that he's a solo artist, meanwhile Deerhoof a sizeable list of former band members in their time. Again i'm just going on assumptions here but that screams out to me that perhaps they are not as successful as they would have hoped. So yeah Stevens to me just seems like the more complete artist, again this is only going by assumptions but it seemed better for me to do that than pretend i'm a fan of the two.

2) Did you read that recent Keith Richards interview? The one where he snorted his father? Lost in the shuffle, in the midst of tawdry familial inhalation and Kate Moss references, was classic Rockism. Keef wanted to let us know that all music today is dogshit. In fact, all music made after 1979, qualifies as bonafide bullshit to the man [he may have a point]. He made a point of letting everyone know that the Artic Monkeys are posers. What are they posing as? White kids from England? What were the Stones posing as? Rockism is retarded.

3) [img] http://cdn.channel.aol.com/amgmusic/artists/pic200/drp400/p416/p41605ra4ma.jpg [/img/

4) I like Sufjan, but Deerhoof just does it for me. Greg Saunier is a GOD. I could write 80 pages about how amazing he is. And he loves ?uestlove! It doesn’t get any better than that. Add in the fact that Deerhoof songs just keep getting better and better and it’s a landslide. I may have a little bay area bias here too. Plus, I love the Curtains. So, I don’t know if Sufjan gets a fair fight.

5) Just one.

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

Rockism is the integration of the old and the new music for me anyway. Its a system
going back to the 50's rock n roll artists with the forerunners like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lewis .
Singing and playing instruments to your own music you wrote. Integrate the basics from then to now and
your got Avril Lavigne writing her own music, playing the guitar and singing rock pop. Rockism you hate some
of it and you love some of it, each to their own. From the old rock n roll to mixed, adult, modern, punk, pop, just acoustic
music of playing the piano and an electric guitar in a rock band. Take the Ashlee and Jessica Simpson compared to
Melissa Ethridge and Janis Joplin. I find the later Rockists but them I am 60. I can variate between classic rock albums
to pop artists that have all the frills. Disco ruled, also Rock n roll . Its now Rap, Hip Hop, Pop. So many genres.
Rockism is a musical theory, a way at looking at music and differentiating individual musical talent.

3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power

I am not too familiar with Cat Power. This one is good.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

Hmm Sufjan Stevens i like better than Deerhoof. Deerhoof sounds too synthetic and erratic. Where as Sufjan is a softer
musical arrangement music. Sufjan's tunes are alot smoother for my taste than Deerhoof. Deerhoof's instrumental background
is somewhat enjoyable. Deerhoof sounds like noisy rock metal. Its way out there, not for me. Sufjan sounds happier in his music.
He definately has more interesting lyrics and relaxing arrangements. Sufjan's tone is much softer giving his music a Magical effect
that lasts alot longer then Deerhoofs.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Oink-

I come to you with grave news. I have received some information which I must share with you on this public forum. It has come to my attention that "ralph" is actually working for the R1AA. He has been sent here by his superiors to learn more about the Oink application process and infiltrate it. If a mission like this were to ever be successful, it could mean the end of Oink as we know it. It is my hope that this day will never come.

TO EVERYONE: please do not give "ralph" and Oink invite. He will most likely return under a different login and we will notify you when he does so. Please use extreme caution when passing precious pink invites on to others you may not know so well.

Ralph has been banned from both Oink and this forum. Do not associate with him.

Thank you.

2) The question "What is Rockism?" is very debatable, and open for individual interpretation. For Kelefa Sanneh, rockism is the aesthetic that defines itself by building barriers against what rock isn't. It means, he says, "idolizing the authentic old legend (or underground hero) while mocking the latest pop star; lionizing punk while barely tolerating disco; loving the live show and hating the music video." Rockism is treating rock music as the standard musical form, or the norm. In the rockist view, rock is the standard state of popular music: the kind to which everything else is compared. Rockism is an attitude about evaluating music. Rockism seems to do an exceptionally distressing job of maintaining genre boundaries. “Rockism” as a vocabulary, is often credited with growing out of the 60’s—Rolling Stone, Dylan, etc. The debate itself of "What is rockism" seemingly took shape in the 1980's. The interesting meaning about the word "rockism" is that it's not only rockist to love rock. Rockism can apply to different kinds of music.

3 http://www.celluloidandvinyl.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/smoking_cat_power.jpg

4) I have to be honest and say I hadn't heard of either artist, but then I poked around online and listened to some of the artist’s music on there. I really liked the track "Chi Tan First Guitar" by Deerhoof. The guitar and voices on it are really pretty. However, I found that most of Deerhoof's music just wasn't triggering any synaptic response for me. I loved the track "For the Windows. . ." by SufjanStevens, but I also liked what I heard of the avalanche. I'm going to have to go with liking SufjanStevens better. The style of music is more preferable to me. I also like his voice as well as the range of instruments in incorporates into his music. He seems to have a fresh perspective and a passion for all the emotion he is putting into his music.

5) One (1) invite would be fantastic. Thank you!
