Also, finally got feedback from a second (!) reviewer

No, that does not sound like my 1DS.

Oh man, I misread Greg's post as yours! Are you comfortable sharing the topic or date here, as I don't know your username?

Did you guys already prepare your recap minus the stats?

A little bit yes, though not every smith ends up putting up a recap.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Friday, 16 April 2021 17:40 (three years ago) link

I kind of hate it when there is no recap. One of the reasons I was so gung-ho helping to write the recaps for the 60s Music ML.

I can't be too secretive about my identity, especially since I am following most of you on player tracker. My 1DS is on Isaac Newton.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 18:05 (three years ago) link

Hey, made 82nd-percentile on yours despite screwing up one of my monied questions. A certain music was almost top ten. And your turnout was ultimately not too bad.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 19:39 (three years ago) link

I am always too scared to money the ones I'm not totally sure about, even though there's basically no chance of a high score unless you money some hard ones.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 16 April 2021 19:54 (three years ago) link

Sometimes I will money when I am less than sure because of the greater upside. This time I moneyed because I thought I knew it but I had misremembered something.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:02 (three years ago) link

Looks like I finished right around the middle of the James Joyce 1DS. The back half of the quiz was much easier for me than the front half; I basically just moneyed the last 5 and got 4 of them right.

Unsurprisingly, I did much better in Improv. If I'd remembered that Aisha Tyler is the current host of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, I'd have managed to tie for first place.

jaymc, Friday, 16 April 2021 20:12 (three years ago) link

heyyyy my friend (and referrer) placed 7th on your 1DS! which makes sense considering he's a professor of studying it

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:13 (three years ago) link

I playtested Improv. Didn't get too many right but thought it was well done.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:13 (three years ago) link

Your friend isn't teh pinefox, is he?

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:13 (three years ago) link

(i got halfway through that sentence and realized i have no idea what his position is exactly but i know he is a professor and that was part of his focus at some point)

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:13 (three years ago) link

xp if that is a reference to the book u should be asking him not me!! (if that's not a reference, no, i don't think so... i don't know who the pinefox is)

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:14 (three years ago) link

No, I guess not. teh pinefox is an old school ilx0r. Still here, actually.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:15 (three years ago) link

many xps!

The alternative is to get all of the questions right (which I've done once, and I've gotten 11/12 once too).

This was obviously a hard one, and I would've gotten the music question wrong. Anyway, my co-smith's recap is in, so I'll have the recap up hopefully by day's end today.

Same here on the Improv (except I finished in the 55th %ile). I could picture Tyler but completely blanked on her name.

Hah, I sometimes forget how many Joyceans are on this board.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:15 (three years ago) link

omg its a user here. LOOK I DIDNT GET MY ADHD MEDS TODAY OK

xp lol i looked it up and got deeply embarrassed

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:16 (three years ago) link

Should we ask teh pinefox to take the quiz?

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:22 (three years ago) link

Absolutely!

Tahini Coates (Leee), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:27 (three years ago) link

Okay, I just posted a link to the current Rolling ILB thread.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:35 (three years ago) link

The alternative is to get all of the questions right (which I've done once, and I've gotten 11/12 once too).

What was this in response to?

Also, if I may, I thought you did an excellent job of setting the difficulty. Of the four questions I missed, one of them I couldn't recall at all but the others I might have gotten on a different day. Which I guess is close to how I felt about the Wodehouse, even though I missed half the questions there.

So only two people got everything correct? Again similar to the Wodehouse.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 20:55 (three years ago) link

Finding out that quite a few people read the relevant WIkipedia page before doing a 1DS. I guess this is common practice, don't really feel like doing it myself too much. Good thing for a smith to know, though.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 April 2021 22:40 (three years ago) link

That was how to place highly.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Friday, 16 April 2021 22:52 (three years ago) link

Recap's up!

Tahini Coates (Leee), Saturday, 17 April 2021 01:03 (three years ago) link

Cool! Heading over there now.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 01:13 (three years ago) link

Was going to ask, when you get your intraday updates does it give you a ny kind of list of what answers are being received?

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 01:14 (three years ago) link

My 1DS is Just Audio: Familiar Songs (May 3!). My previous 1DS's were Flops, Title Lines, and Apologies.

When your 1DS goes live you get a full running list throughout the day of all answers people gave that have something like 5 or more responses.

I always write my recaps up in advance off site.

I have only studied for a 1DS on one occasion - MTV Video Music Awards, and my scan of the Wikipedia page of notable events and winners of video of the year got me like 4 answers I otherwise would have missed. It felt kind of hollow though and I've never one it again.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Saturday, 17 April 2021 03:26 (three years ago) link

The list of answers given so far is on the Smith's page by the way.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Saturday, 17 April 2021 03:27 (three years ago) link

That’s what I figured, thanks so much for confirming. Assuming that allows you to add scoring notes for the commissioner on the fly.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 03:36 (three years ago) link

I guess when you write the recap offline you just add in the stats at the end and any comments about ease of play, congrats to winners, etc.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 03:41 (three years ago) link

Also have I mentioned: my fingerprint, it me.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 03:46 (three years ago) link

Now feeling I should have done slightly better on Leee’s 1DS because of Reading Ulysses

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 04:14 (three years ago) link

Feel like there's definitely a divide between people who deliberately study for 1DSes and MLs and those who don't. I guess I'm more interested testing what I already know than what I can recall after cramming.

Btw, just noticed that Chicago improv legend TJ J@g0d0wsk1 finished 46th in Improv. We both went 11/12 and missed the same question, but I did a better job with moneying.

jaymc, Saturday, 17 April 2021 04:57 (three years ago) link

Do you do improv, jaymc?

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 11:57 (three years ago) link

Came to say I am getting crushed in both MLs. I wasn’t expecting to do well, just wanted to be one of the gang, not too mumped up but still.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 12:00 (three years ago) link

I did improv in college (with Daily Show correspondent Jordan Klepper), took a few classes at iO about 12 years ago, and have had friends in the Chicago scene.

Does anyone want to briefly explain MD2 of the GKPL to me? I see that "straight" is a "hand" in poker, but that may be a red herring, since I can't make sense of any of the other.

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 17 April 2021 19:09 (three years ago) link

Does anyone want to briefly explain MD2 of the GKPL to me? I see that "straight" is a "hand" in poker, but that may be a red herring, since I can't make sense of any of the other.

The first five answers all correspond to playing card rankings in descending order:
K (abbreviation for strikeout)
Q (first letter in quartermaster)
J (shape of candy cane)
10 (Hamilton is on the $10 bill)
9 (Ode to Joy = 9th Symphony)

I get it now that I saw the smith's recap, but there was absolutely no way I was going to figure that one out myself.

the portentous pepper (govern yourself accordingly), Saturday, 17 April 2021 21:11 (three years ago) link

Ah! Somewhat fiendish, but not utterly impossible, I guess. I like the out-of-the-boxness of J for candy cane. Thanks!

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 17 April 2021 21:42 (three years ago) link

American revolution: a victory! a victory!

1(1)-0(0), granted, but I'll take it.

anatol_merklich, Friday, 23 April 2021 11:18 (three years ago) link

Just noticed that forks and I are in the same General Knowledge Puzzle League ML group and are facing each other today. Good luck!

jaymc, Friday, 23 April 2021 14:25 (three years ago) link

That ML has been challenging but rewarding. American Revolution, on the other hand, might be the hardest ML I've ever played. I'm no American Revolution buff, but I'm interested enough in American history that I thought I might do a little better than I am. Feels like there are a LOT of YEKIOYD answers and not many alternative entry points.

jaymc, Friday, 23 April 2021 14:28 (three years ago) link

lol i am dead last in the general knowledge quiz, not doing well!

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 23 April 2021 14:44 (three years ago) link

I am getting crushed in both of those, but once in a while manage to eke out a win in GKPL. Think the best I have done in AmRev is a 0(0)-0(0) tie.

Bewlay Brothers & Sister Rrose (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 April 2021 15:55 (three years ago) link

As someone who takes this stuff way too seriously, I'm glad I'm not doing any of the current MLs.

That said, I did really well in the New Year's 1DS, which is especially pleasing because it wasn't even on my radar till the day of.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Friday, 23 April 2021 18:27 (three years ago) link

Are you going to do the next two MLs that are queued up?

Bewlay Brothers & Sister Rrose (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 April 2021 18:34 (three years ago) link

Just LGBT2. It's been a long time since I try to maintain literary pretensions, so probably wouldn't do well in 21st C Lit (ahem).

Tahini Coates (Leee), Friday, 23 April 2021 18:44 (three years ago) link

i was interested in both of those but i don't like doing multiple mini leagues at the same time, so i ended up just picking 21st century lit

na (NA), Friday, 23 April 2021 18:46 (three years ago) link

Yeah, two MLs at once can be kind of fatiguing

Bewlay Brothers & Sister Rrose (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 April 2021 18:51 (three years ago) link

Ive somehow clawed my way to 2nd in puzzle league due to ridiculous luck in schedule. I face 1 and 3 this week tho, let's see how far that luck can stretch
