oh wow "streetlights"!

this album is shaping up to be my favourite of hers in a long time

ufo, Wednesday, 14 April 2021 18:10 (three years ago) link

there’s also a new EP by Intyce (see one year upthread), with Invadea. this time it’s 4 tracks, 5’30 mins, with features by Dawn and Samantha Mumba (!). mentioning it because some people liked last year’s EP a lot. for me personally the tracks are so short as to be inconsequential.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/15/arts/music/dawn-richard-second-line.html

For “Second Line,” she wanted to shift the focus to her mother, who underwent a knee surgery at the start of 2020. After Richard moved back home to help take care of her, the pandemic struck, and Richard suddenly found herself occupying a guest room in her parents’ home with an album that still needed to be finished.

But she adjusted, as she tends to do, linking up with local engineer Eric Heigle to complete the record while accepting the responsibilities that come with living with your parents. (Folding clothes and towels, which she recounted with relatable exasperation.) And her extended proximity to her family flowed back into the album: Her mother appears throughout as a kind of narrator, and Richard said their relationship reached a new, adult level through their many conversations for those recordings

NY Times article also mentions Dawn taking an online finance class and this:

“I was kind of like, ‘I don’t see a lot of Black on the roster,’” she said.

But she was convinced after meeting with the label at her manager’s suggestion, and realizing how many of its artists (Caribou, Destroyer) she loved.

Nice live-streamed interview with Dawn and her mum just now on the npr YouTube channel following a listening party for the album.

Had to interrupt my spin of the LP (looks gorgeous btw) half way through because of that event, so am now returning to the vinyl. This edition ends after “Perfect Storm”, which works in context but ‘SELFish’ is such an epic -,no mere outro - that knowing now that it exists is probably going to skew my feelings about the record.

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 30 April 2021 20:19 (two years ago) link

this starts as a dance album even more bangin than reputation and then mutates into a sequence of increasingly proggier slow jams, exactly on my wavelength, and then dawn sings over the moonlight sonata, which, lol. pretty cool with living in a world where this album exists

obsessed with “Nostalgia” and to a lesser extent, “Boomerang”. a whole album with this vibe would (have) be(en) awesome, but it does indeed go in a very different direction after “Bussiframe”. need to delve into it further, but “SELFish” at least is def very good

As far as this still implying the possibility that her next album is her deserved mega-platinum (or whatever said equivalent is in streaming terms these days) smash record, maybe it is!

oh yes this album is fantastic

once I fell through the “Pressure” rabbit hole that was it. when that dub bass comes in under the chorus...

first proper listen to most of this today, obv the brilliance was never in doubt but

i love how so many of her sonic motifs are present and correct, but it still moves on into its own new space

also she's really into panning vocals more than ever

there's a ton of thoughts i shd thunk later but anyway tracectory maintained and accelerated

Chickpeas, Scamps and Beeves (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 6 May 2021 20:54 (two years ago) link

oh it's deeper and dubbier than ever before and that's fun too

i don't think it's my favourite yet but bollocks to keeping a score

Took two listens but this is another triumph

rob, Thursday, 6 May 2021 22:49 (two years ago) link

there's some really good stuff on here but i don't know if it really works for me as a whole yet, it's really fragmented?

ufo, Friday, 7 May 2021 02:01 (two years ago) link

Thats my take too

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 7 May 2021 04:55 (two years ago) link

I don't think anybody's album work is less fragmented than Dawn's, she seems to constantly want her albums to flow musically and thematically and this feels the same to me. Maybe some of the individual pieces/ideas are shorter than before, maybe, a little bit?

live show at BAM last night was overwhelming in the precision of stagecraft and choreography but WAY too much sound for a relatively small house like seeing an arena show in ballroom. there were numerous songs that took me ten seconds to go "oh yeah, i know this track" simply because they were so overwhelming. Dawn sounded great (though I could've done with less vocal effect work throughout. It was an efficient tsunami, done in 70 minutes, ran through maybe 18 songs like it was nothing. Glad I caught it but I'd really prefer to see her in a less vegas setting next time.

new album with spencer zahn out in october

maura, Tuesday, 30 August 2022 13:07 (one year ago) link

“New Orleans dynamo Dawn Richard and multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Spencer Zahn announce Pigments, their debut collaborative album, out October 21st on Merge Records. Today, the pair presents the first movement: “Coral,” “Sandstone,” “Indigo,” and “Vantablack,” which is accompanied by an official video and marks Richard’s directorial debut. Pigments tells the story of finding one’s self through dance, self-expression, and community through the lens of New Orleans’ contemporary arts scene. Not strictly classical, jazz, or ambient electronica, but rather a body of “movements,” Pigments is one long composition guided by Richard’s stripped-down vocals. Following her acclaimed Merge debut, Second Line, Pigments reveals a new facet of Richard’s limitless talents and her entry into the contemporary classic world, and provides a fresh introduction to Zahn, whose intimate, sprawling soundscapes play with principles of open space and motion.”
