Sheldon Pearce ( former Pitchfork current New Yorker writer editor) calls Alchemist “one of hiphop’s greatest producers ever” in his little New Yorker review of Armand Hammer “Haram.” I like Alchemist style but am not sure if he’s in top pantheon. What do you all think?

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 13:48 (three years ago) link

he's been a fixture for two decades and he's arguably having his greatest (critical) success now, idk where i'd put him on my personal list but he's worked himself into the conversation

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 13:54 (three years ago) link

I really hate ranking shit, but I definitely think the last decade has done a lot to make his stock rise

and in retrospect he's definitely part of what led to the whole new east coast grimy underground shit - griselda, mach hommy, roc marciano, the god fahim, etc etc etc, hell daringer's whole sound

one of my fav alchemist beats

He's very resilient, he went from producing street hit singles in the 00's to middleground albums nowadays.
Gotta respect that. But greatest producer ? No.

ANU (sisilafami), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 21:48 (three years ago) link

i took pearce's "one of the greatest" to translate roughly to "top 50 or so"

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 22:40 (three years ago) link

will never say no to funky, paranoid, l.a. street shit

my fav rod wave song is still 'heart 4 sale' tho it slightly predates his breakthrough

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 18:19 (two years ago) link

if you go back far enough, you'll find rod wave songs that are actually upbeat

big recommend: J.U.S. - GOD GOKU JAY-Z

real cool shit from Danny Brown's Bruiser Brigade label...almost like if Koreatown Oddity was more gangster

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 22:03 (two years ago) link

co-sign, good album. he actually does have a bit of hov in his voice

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 22:15 (two years ago) link

It's cool I think Bruised Brigade is actually going to be a cool and interesting label with a real vibe, not just the typical rapper label where it feels they just are doing it because that's what you do when you get to a certain level

heavily fucking with the topaz jones album.

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Friday, 7 May 2021 14:22 (two years ago) link

mach-hommy album is good, great clunky trashy beats across the whole thing

na (NA), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 18:48 (two years ago) link

agreed, i dig it too. he's a much nastier and more creative lyricist than the other griselda guys. never feels like he's doing cosplay.

also totally fearless, will say anything.

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:34 (two years ago) link

prob not gonna wade through 68 minutes of lloyd banks in 2021 but the tracks with benny the butcher and freddie gibbs are high-quality grime

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyNDIvzp5y8

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Friday, 4 June 2021 19:34 (two years ago) link

*not grime music, obv, grimy east coast street music

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Friday, 4 June 2021 19:34 (two years ago) link

Spottie, Friday, 4 June 2021 19:39 (two years ago) link

Pray for Haiti rules ♥️♥️♥️♥️ Mach

i wish the new roddy ricch single were better, feels a bit like "high fashion" overdosed on valium

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 20:35 (two years ago) link

it's not great like its forebears but i like it anyway. the dreamlike vibe of the video is pretty cool, wish i could dance in that club he goes to

dyl, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 06:15 (two years ago) link

there are some rly nice touches in the production, as is often the case w/ mustard

dyl, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 06:16 (two years ago) link

i didn’t mind it but it’s not that exciting, prob a “safe” choice. he’ll come with something harder next i bet

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 June 2021 06:32 (two years ago) link

of the big A list rappers rn he’s prob still my favorite

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 June 2021 06:33 (two years ago) link

bringing back 2004, Lloyd Banks and Jim Jones just put out two good records in 2021!

pound-for-pound his funniest song yet.

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Friday, 25 June 2021 21:34 (two years ago) link

three weeks pass...

the herbo project is really great imo, not in rap many who can do the vulnerable tough guy thing like he can. somehow still only 25 years old.

bart harley-jarvis cocker (voodoo chili), Friday, 16 July 2021 14:29 (two years ago) link

the "i really mean it" flip is the only real weak spot, i mostly think rappers should just let that sample be in the future

bart harley-jarvis cocker (voodoo chili), Friday, 16 July 2021 14:35 (two years ago) link

wow yeah feels like he's been around forever

digging Deuce Ellis - Acid

he's got a good flow, love the beats, the live bass sample almost reminds me of a modern Low End Theory track this one has Che Noir who I like a lot too

Florida fast rap remixes by DJ Fetti Fee and others like DJ Frisco954 speed up the vocals

curmudgeon, Sunday, 25 July 2021 04:53 (two years ago) link

it's kind of trendy to hate on kenny beats nowadays, but this one is equal parts sinister and playful. offset jim does his "norcal drakeo" thing pretty well here, it's just fun to hear him talk
