I'm surprised Cabbage haven't been mentioned. Feel like they were on the verge of breaking through a couple of years ago. They weren't great.
I haven't heard every band on the list, but a lot of them don't do anything for me. Idles and the accompanying hype in particular I find very tiresome. A lot of these bands I just find myself wishing I was listening to Art Brut instead. They had the tunes and a cleverness that I just don't get from most of these acts. If Art Brut were just starting out now I probably wouldn't have much interest in them, but at the time they sounded fresh and it was easy to connect with them.
I loved that last Porridge Radio album and the new Goat Girl is one of the best albums of the year so far. I would have voted for one of them if I'd seen the poll in time. I'm still working out the Dry Cleaning album. Florence's vocals and lyrics sell it well, although I do sometimes wish the music was a little more compelling. Half way through I find myself losing interest a bit even though I do like the guitar sounds they use. There's definitely something there though. I've always wanted another band who come close to what Life Without Buildings did and at times I can hear some of that in Dry Cleaning.

Have you tried Drahla? They remind me of LWB, but noisier and saxophonier (and better imo!)

I haven't no. I'll check them out. Thanks for the tip!

This video was my first exposure to Post punk band Dry Cleaning. Yep, they’ve got the formula down

the notion that for her merits she is even in the same ballpark as sue tompkins is grandly calumnous tbh

Have you tried Yard Act? You won't know you're not listening to Art Brut instead.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 23:59 (three years ago) link
Ha, I just listened to a Yard Act song. I get what you mean. There's another band called Sports Team who do a similar thing. They almost had a number one album last year! I didn't realise just how many of these bands there were now.
― kitchen person, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:38 (three years ago) link
I was told there are no more bands! and yet here there are so many, right in one thread

― Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 05:03 (three years ago) link
Ha, didn't see this poll previously, but Tropical Fuck Storm are totally a band that was recommended to me by a spotify algorithm and that I thought "Hey, these guys are pretty good!"
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 05:09 (three years ago) link
That's because unlike most of the bands here, they do their own thing and don't sound like Ought
― imago, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 08:56 (three years ago) link
, who are themselves derivative and dull
― imago, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 08:57 (three years ago) link
Metz is a weird inclusion here? post-grungey band on subpop and their debut was 9 years ago...I guess Ice Age fit the sound somewhat too, but again their debut was a decade ago.
Viagra Boys are a lot of fun live, but both live and on record i'm still just wishing it was some new Pissed Jeans

one local band I always thought was brilliant and never got its due was Brute Heart, but they were more i guess post punk in the slits/young marble giants way...but also very original they had their own sound, loved this band so much

I don't mind Viagra Boys...but in 2021 I'm not listening to an album called "Welfare Jazz" by a band called "Viagra Boys"

look buddy if I had to dodge all the bands with dumb names I wouldn't listen to anyone

it's more welfare jazz that gives me a vibe I don't like

they’re in my top 2-3 (with tropical fuck storm and dry cleaning) in this list before a big drop. my fav music is like midwestern garage punk and pigfuck styles of obnoxious punk music with dumb band names and jocular humour though
― flopson, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 22:59 (three years ago) link
you ever listen to The Blind Shake?

my top 4 would be the same as the results just in a different order
I also like Iceage and Metz. liked a couple of songs by Viagra Boys and Fat White Family but not really a fan of either. never heard any of the others.

oh Amyl & The Sniffers are alright too but Simon forgot to actually include them as a poll option

oh are they good?the name made me think there were one of those retro sleaze l.a. punk kinda things
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 8 April 2021 13:15 (three years ago) link
I actually did listen to and consider them for this poll but they struck me as musically up to something less self-consciously arty than most of these bands
― intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Thursday, 8 April 2021 13:20 (three years ago) link
I'm not sure I would say they were good, but they are alright. only heard a couple of things

I wouldn't have said either A&TS or The Chats were "post-punk". They're just... rock bands?

I'm fine with calling both bands punk but no, not post-punk by any definition I recognise
― CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:44 (three years ago) link
I was going to say punk but then I'm not even sure that The Chats are that. But nah, I guess they are.
― emil.y, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:46 (three years ago) link
I guess The Chats are like the Sham 69 version of punk? That's okay by me.
― emil.y, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:47 (three years ago) link
The Chats are Australia's answer to HMHB
― imago, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:48 (three years ago) link
Last album a blast too yeah
They’re as post-punk as Idles, which is to say not much but they have elements (groove, MES sprechsang-y bits) that aren’t just ‘punk.’
― Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:49 (three years ago) link
I would err toward the broad church when it comes to a genre that fundamentally just means ‘came after the first half of 1978 or so.’
― Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:52 (three years ago) link
Not knocking The Chats here (though I'm not into it enough to make it through a whole album, I still get 'Smoko' stuck in my head every now and again), just can't see a world in which they belong to the genre of post-punk, as elastic as that genre might be. It just feels like it doesn't suit either the music or their own intentions.
