hadn't heard this japanese bonus track "red leaves, falling" from songs before, it's incredible. gorgeous sax

I c-a-n-n-o-t w-a-i-t to hear the studio version of that jaw-dropping live song that was posted above (from a few different shows) some months back.

FTR, I was referring to "Time Escaping," which was actually posted on another thread – here it is again (still rules):

new music!!!

ufo, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 11:20 (two years ago) link

they go on tour in the first week of september so i wonder if the new album will be out by then

ufo, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 11:23 (two years ago) link

i'm not huge on "sparrow", it's a little repetitive, but wow "little things" is incredible

ufo, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 11:32 (two years ago) link

like that free-flowing groove is so good, i could listen to this band just noodle away forever

ufo, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 11:44 (two years ago) link

I'm hoping, iirc there was an interview in March-ish where Buck Meek said their new album was pretty much done.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 August 2021 14:12 (two years ago) link

yeah i'm expecting it'll surely be out before the end of the year

"little things" reminds me a lot of tusk but way more out there, i've had it on loop basically for the last three hours

ufo, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 14:19 (two years ago) link

I think "Little Things" is the song Adrianne was playing/singing in an Insta story last week

Yeah, this is great

Shallot Shortage 2021 (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 August 2021 14:51 (two years ago) link

(also not huge on "Sparrow" - assume it's not an album track?)

Shallot Shortage 2021 (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 August 2021 15:06 (two years ago) link

they're presenting this as a double a-side so i would assume that both of these are probably going to be on the next album

ufo, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 15:08 (two years ago) link

I agree "Little Things" has a bit of a Fleetwood Mac feel, but also – like other recent BF stuff (see "Time Escaping," above) – has deep roots in other precedents that hit me hard on an aesthetic/emotional level, but I can't put my finger on what exactly they are. I could also listen to this groove all day!

Shallot Shortage 2021 (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 August 2021 17:40 (two years ago) link

"Sparrow" has sort of a "devotional" quality, no? It's like Lavender Diamond or something.

Shallot Shortage 2021 (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 August 2021 18:12 (two years ago) link

I love "Little Things" and it also makes me think of them as an arena band -- it's kind of a U2 move (in addition to other influences mentioned above).

https://www.instagram.com/p/CSaTgjuJf9D

confirmed that both tracks are on the album

"sparrow" is growing on me, i think it'll be a solid enough album track

another new single "certainty"

ufo, Tuesday, 7 September 2021 11:29 (two years ago) link

Their most country-fied tune since the first album, no?

tumblin’ dice outro (morrisp), Tuesday, 7 September 2021 15:56 (two years ago) link

Def my fave of the three advance singles so far--am liking how it strikes me as a slight companion to/vocal reversal of something like "Candle" off Buck Meek's great recent album (a tune which Lenker co-wrote)

Kangol In The Light (Craig D.), Tuesday, 7 September 2021 16:04 (two years ago) link

some of the other new songs they've played live have been more country-tinged too

ufo, Wednesday, 8 September 2021 01:14 (two years ago) link

Nice but a bit unremarkable, no? - how I felt about the Buck Meek album.

"Little Things" -- which, aside from the electric guitar, sounds like DMB -- is an absolute jam.

Indexed, Wednesday, 8 September 2021 15:56 (two years ago) link

when i see the letters DMB, in that order, i immediately hear carter beauford whipping little 16th-triplets on a tightly closed hi-hat before opening it up to ring on the 4. ba-da-ba-Tsssss! maybe something for big thief to think about

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 8 September 2021 15:59 (two years ago) link

Chimes, too

Indexed, Wednesday, 8 September 2021 16:15 (two years ago) link

oh yeah, start of that glissando chime-wave, let it settle in for a few beats before the chorus, then 16th-triplets on the hi-hat, ba-da-ba-TSSSssssss! now you're in a new place with dave

playing p4k fest right now

ufo, Saturday, 11 September 2021 00:45 (two years ago) link

A rather dull start: three of their softest ballads.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 11 September 2021 01:19 (two years ago) link

they're playing the hits now. my old pals are at the show right now, crashing here later. i hope they're wearing masks

"HYYOOOOOOONK!" is the sound I make (Karl Malone), Saturday, 11 September 2021 01:21 (two years ago) link

"dragon", this new one they're closing with, is really cool

ufo, Saturday, 11 September 2021 01:26 (two years ago) link

If the album doesn’t include “Time Escaping,” I’m gonna be Big Mad!

tumblin’ dice outro (morrisp), Saturday, 11 September 2021 01:37 (two years ago) link

they've been playing it on tour so it'll probably be there

20-song double album confirmed for early next year

i'd heard rumours it was going to be a double album so nice to have that confirmed

ufo, Tuesday, 5 October 2021 00:48 (two years ago) link

Fantastic! Well maybe not the “next year” part, thought it was coming sooner than that, but I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 00:59 (two years ago) link

I hope they embrace the messiness of a double album. I don’t think I’d enjoy a full double album of Big Thief by the numbers.

https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/q1ia87/big_thief_confirm_20song_double_lp_being_released/

that's what they say they're doing

ufo, Tuesday, 5 October 2021 02:01 (two years ago) link

figured i'd compile as many of the new songs as i can to get an idea of what the album's going to be like. definitely a bit of a shift towards country

new songs played on tour 2021:
dragon
spud infinity
simulation swarm
change
dried roses
blue lightning
promise is a pendulum
red moon
blurred view
12,000 lines (i can't find a full band recording of this one)
happiness
time escaping
once a buncha times

"once a buncha times" is unlikely to be on the album though, it was apparently written just before this tour & the album was mostly recorded in june last year. it's also very possible some of these aren't on the album & there's unheard tracks that will be on it - they haven't been playing "little things" live yet. there's also "flower of blood" and another new song with an unknown title but i haven't tracked down recordings.

unreleased songs they played on tour in 2020:
bruiser
shadow too
someone 2
another unknown title

recent new adrianne solo songs:
only place
heavy bend (fan title)

full band versions of adrianne solo songs:
ingdyar
two reverse

Thank you for this, ufo! <3

Sorry if this has been addressed, but have they said anything about whether "Little Things/Sparrow" and "Certainty" definitely are or aren't intended for the new one?

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 20:44 (two years ago) link

also thx a ton for that digging, gives me something to tide me over!

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 20:48 (two years ago) link

there was a deleted instagram post by the bassist who said they're intended for the new album but that's all

"change" is the next single apparently

ufo, Tuesday, 5 October 2021 20:51 (two years ago) link

just listened to "change" (as I work my way down the list); nice tune. most of these are indeed quite country-ish! (the "blue lighting" vid seems to be down, btw)

juristic person (morrisp), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 20:53 (two years ago) link

"Red Moon" is where they get all the Dead Heads on board...

juristic person (morrisp), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 20:56 (two years ago) link

("blurred view" also down, nuts)

juristic person (morrisp), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 20:57 (two years ago) link

they were the same full show bootleg, there aren't any other videos of those unfortunately

ufo, Tuesday, 5 October 2021 20:58 (two years ago) link

juristic person (morrisp), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 21:05 (two years ago) link

they are 100% a hippie band, luckily that hasn't stopped them from making good music

here's the studio "change"

tour starting at the end of january, so maybe the album will be out around then, since it's set for early next year
