echoes of his famous "even the haters and losers" tweet, but he's clearly not in top form anymore.

Looks like right before the picture was taken Asshole told other Asshole "ok, take a step back. No, one more step. OK, just one more ..." And then at the last minute Miller creeped one step closer again, to stay in the frame.

I was just wondering:

Does Donald Trump, as of April 2021, have any political agenda, other than to protect and perhaps enrich himself?

He was considered, from say 2016-2021, as the leader of a populist far-right / proto-fascist turn in world politics. He enacted, I think, bad and dangerous policies. You would normally expect such a figure to be continually pushing a policy agenda by whatever means.

But is Trump? Or is he merely shoring himself up (what happened to all the claims about prosecutions he would face after leaving office?), or merely trying to make maximum cash -- with no real political agenda beyond that?

the pinefox, Saturday, 10 April 2021 23:31 (three years ago) link

His only agenda is promoting himself, preferably enriching himself also in the process. That should be abundantly clear by now.

Aimless: wouldn't that, then, be good news? As it would mean that he doesn't have any particular interest in promoting far right policies?

yeah i‘ve been wondering about that myself

groovemaaan, Sunday, 11 April 2021 13:00 (three years ago) link

he's promoting the far right policies still to stoke up his followers to stave off repercussions from his presidency, to grift them and also because he's a racist and a fucking terrible human being

Very much in the works. Both Cyrus Vance’s office and the New York AG’s have been widely reported to have ratcheted up their staffing and document review, especially after the tax records question was finally put to bed. There’s been a variety of further reports that the Trump Org’s main financial guy, Weisselberg, has been repeatedly questioned and papers on his and his family’s end reviewed. Just the other day, prosecutors won the formal right to get access to a bunch of financial papers that Weisselberg’s son’s ex-wife had access to due to their 2018 divorce. (She’s been happily cooperating away, unsurprisingly, but these papers needed a formal sign-off to be accessed by that office.) So basically the work is happening, with the supposition being that if there’s enough clear evidence then Weisselberg will be under plenty of pressure to flip. We’ll see.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 April 2021 13:35 (three years ago) link

This in and of itself would be enough for headaches but there’s whatever the Fulton County DA in Georgia is considering, while the wider DOJ look into January 6 is a story of increasing focus on various superseding indictments on particular participants. And for all we know there’s other stuff being looked at quietly.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 April 2021 13:37 (three years ago) link

They're all going to pull a Mueller and indict a bunch of b-listers and goons but not the big guy.

It seems like Trump has the GOP tied up in knots right now. This feels like a good thing. They are in the “can’t live with him, can’t live without him” stage. Of course, this could all change at a moment’s notice. Or... he could be the wrench in McConnell’s works for the next several years. I, for one, hope the GOP finally is getting to the point where they regret, and really start paying for, having hitched their wagons to his cult of personality.

epistantophus, Sunday, 11 April 2021 14:53 (three years ago) link

There will be no regrets as long as the tax cuts and court packing are in effect.

I know King Turd has his diehard fans, but seriously, is there really a significant group of even the GOP that wishes this guy were louder and more visible? It feels like such a relief to only have to deal with his shit by choice. Wanting things back the way things were just a few months ago would be like getting over a bad case of food poisoning but wishing you still had diarrhea.

Inconsequential. The donor class Trump is talking to knows Mitch has gotten them everything they wanted.

In on the killfile (Boring, Maryland), Sunday, 11 April 2021 17:36 (three years ago) link

Trump only has ever cared about himself. He wants the attention, he wants it to all be about him. When he was president, he of course helped the GOP reach some of their goals, but only in so far as it benefitted him to do so. But now what can he do for the GOP? Only make noise, distract, get involved where he’s not wanted, and actively backstab GOP leadership as they attempt to move on. But he’s losing his grip on at least a portion of his base, which means he’s losing his power over GOP leadership. He’s back to being all talk now, and frustrated over not being able to use his preferred channels and reach the same scale of audience. I can only see him continuing to lash out and attack any and all targets even if it won’t benefit himself beyond just saving a little face over being unwanted, a loser and a pariah.

epistantophus, Sunday, 11 April 2021 17:36 (three years ago) link

Aimless: wouldn't that, then, be good news?

I take it as better than most of the alternatives. The critical thing so far has been the removal of his Twitter account. He has no method of amplifying his momentary thoughts and he's too lazy to find and learn a more difficult tool. How he rose to the presidency in face of his universal incompetence is an insoluble mystery.

sharpening the contraindications (Aimless), Sunday, 11 April 2021 17:39 (three years ago) link

I'm waiting for him to do an arena tour. I liked the recent David Roth tweet, too, where he predicted that a commercial starring Trump seems inevitable, and inevitably (even if very much in character) super tacky.
