which is especially funny considering how shields said he obsessed over the lyrics for loveless almost as much as the music because he didn't want them to be bad

ufo, Friday, 2 April 2021 12:46 (three years ago) link

tbf the audible lyrics of loveless are not bad

clunkiest classic mbv lyric: "slow"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 2 April 2021 12:56 (three years ago) link

I actually don't mind the (generic) lyrics all that much, they're barely intelligible anyway. It's the melodic contour of a song like 'Blown a Wish' that impels a kind of visceral disgust on my end. Maybe it's, uh, genetic – I've always hated twee-sounding music, even when I was a wee kid. Come to think of it, much of what I dislike about Loveless is of the same order as what I dislike about Pet Sounds, except MBV peddles quantifiably less of it and has those awesome geetars to make up for it.

pomenitul, Friday, 2 April 2021 13:08 (three years ago) link

Loveless > Pet Sounds confirmed

I've never once heard any MBV lyrics stand out as distractingly weak or bad.

Right, I'm referring to the 15% of the time when one lyric or phrase is audible.

billstevejim, Friday, 2 April 2021 15:03 (three years ago) link

I'm pretty sure the point was that they're supposed to be felt more than heard, not emphasized above the music as something that could potentially distract. None of their records had lyric sheets.

billstevejim, Friday, 2 April 2021 15:09 (three years ago) link

I guess I grew really accustomed to the sound of my old mp3s from the early 2000s bc the Youtube rip of the EPs comp sounds kind of amazing.

class project pat (m bison), Friday, 2 April 2021 15:22 (three years ago) link

I just discovered the phrase "coffee cup" is not a misheard lyric.

billstevejim, Friday, 2 April 2021 15:26 (three years ago) link

xp Yeah the bass in "Slow" sounds like bone zone.

billstevejim, Friday, 2 April 2021 15:28 (three years ago) link

Can Slow be quantified as hornier than Soft As Snow (But Warm Inside)? Might require polling.

Noel Emits, Friday, 2 April 2021 15:37 (three years ago) link

A good hard polling tbc.

“To here knows where” is somewhat... horny

Mark G, Saturday, 3 April 2021 21:48 (three years ago) link

sorry i dont make the fuckin rules!! the song that says "lick lick lick and suck suck suck" is using the hornyman's dialect, anything less is eye-wagglin innuendo or blue whales on ambient trying to get hard.

class project pat (m bison), Saturday, 3 April 2021 23:04 (three years ago) link

lol *ambien but that works too

New and long Kevin Shields interview in today's Libération. One great tidbit - dunno if this is old news but it was new to me - is his love for early De La Soul and Public Enemy and how their use of sampling evoked Long Island in the '70s for him. Then he realized both groups were from LI!

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 14 April 2021 10:13 (three years ago) link

No mention of William Joel ?

calstars, Wednesday, 14 April 2021 11:16 (three years ago) link

Nope. But he does put to the rest the idea that AR Kane were an influence. Says he admired their stuff up to 1990 but MBV were going in an entirely different direction.

Alba, Monday, 19 April 2021 15:04 (two years ago) link

he does put to the rest the idea that AR Kane were an influence
I have never thought that at the time or since, other than many post-Mary Chain bands were influencing each other and the aesthetic moment was driven by similar goals.

his love for early De La Soul and Public Enemy
They sampled PE on "Instrumental B". Love the bit about LI memories.

apparently j played a new dino jr song, wonder if kevin will play new MBV. doubt it

global tetrahedron, Monday, 19 April 2021 17:14 (two years ago) link

turned out to be a chat among the band, mostly reminiscing about their early days with each of them picking a couple of (other people's) tunes

j also played the theme song to the detectorists on his slot along with gbh and eater

https://www.thejakartapost.com/life/2021/05/18/still-gliding-my-bloody-valentines-shields-talks-new-albums-southeast-asian-sounds.html

new interview where shields says that the two new albums are currently both planned for release next year, but there should be still some new music released this year (presumably pre-release singles?). i'll believe it when i hear it but i feel a little more optimistic than his previous promises of 'a new EP soon' etc. because we've heard more about the process in this year's interviews etc.

ufo, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 21:25 (two years ago) link

i think the concrete moves, signing to domino, getting on streaming, bode well. i don't trust anything he says but it seems like he realizes the band won't last forever

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 21:48 (two years ago) link

yeah, m b v was preceded by similar concrete moves like the remasters finally coming out so that's more reason to be optimistic too

Is it really the same original lead singer guy singing on Geek as on “Lovely Sweet Darlene”? Talk about a major change in singing styles. Why yes I am doing an MBV deep dive right now thanks for asking. Their early stuff is supposed to totally suck, but I actually don’t think it’s all that bad! Derivative as all hell, but still fun and noisy.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 9 May 2022 14:29 (one year ago) link

ikr, I remember listening to Tiger In My Tank on yt and every other comment was "wow they really sucked in the early days, huh?" and you know it might be a Cramps knock-off, but it's a good Cramps knock-off, plenty to appreciate even that early on.

Portrait Of A Dissolvi Ng Drea M (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 9 May 2022 14:37 (one year ago) link

Just clocking the "there should be still some new music released this year" post from May 2021. Sigh. Shields. Fucks sake man.

I know ranked lists are highly subjective, but I still can't believe there's no mention of "Only Shallow" or "Loomer" in the Guardian's top twenty.

I can't tell if he's trolling or not (ilxor), Thursday, 2 February 2023 18:48 (one year ago) link

I reviewed Loveless when it came out and decided “Loomer” was my favourite track. It’s overlooked too often.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 2 February 2023 19:42 (one year ago) link

Alexis was asking us on FB about what we would choose for such a list, my own choice was "Don't Ask Why" (in that all the obvious ones I could think of would likely be in there). I think "Only Shallow" is more of a US thing since that was the actual single as such over here, promowise at least.
