Here's a tip, though. When you go to your GP to get it checked out, don't bring your girlfriend in at the same time. Especially if she needs her breast examined for lumps that day. By the same GP. I'm... just saying.

eight years pass...

Well Friday was an interesting day. (Go in for surgery on one side, learn beforehand from the doctor that your hunch was right and that there was one on the other side. Needless to say I immediately approved going bilateral and being done with it.)
Am currently still a bit sore.

What's recovery typically like from the inguinal hernia? Should it still be sore three weeks later??

In my experience, yes.

Though I notice someone upthread says the pain fades after two weeks. Maybe speak to your doctor to make sure. Having a hernia is literally the worst pain I've ever felt in my life.

To be accurate, the post-operative pain.

I literally got mine from carrying boxes of records. Stupid fucking music.

did you ever feel like naming your hernia Neil Lennon?

calzino, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 11:18 (two years ago) link

Thanks Tom D.

I've found it uncomfortable more than hideously painful but there are definitely days when I've found it a bit draining.

djh, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:55 (two years ago) link

Yes, I think the levels of pain experienced can vary greatly!

one month passes...

My hernia scar has started bleeding 12 or so weeks after the operation and it feels like the hernia has re-happened. Do they tend to be re-treated?

djh, Monday, 21 June 2021 18:38 (two years ago) link

Delayed response — generally speaking they shouldn’t but it can happen. I had an ultrasound done in December to double check on some irritation in the area and thankfully all was okay, but it can’t hurt to do similar if it’s an option for you.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 July 2021 13:32 (two years ago) link

I had a hernia operation when I was 10. For a couple of months after, the scar wouldn't completely heal, leaking little bits of pus through a tiny hole. Every week or two, out would pop a small knot of black thread--I was rejecting the sutures.

I kept them in an empty One-a-Day vitamin bottle, like you do when you're 10.
