In 68 career games, Williamson has made 19 shots (on 56 attempts) from outside the paint. Four of those 19 came in his rookie debut. https://www.nba.com/news/power-rankings-notebook-week-15

Zion Williamson leads the NBA by averaging 19.7 points per game in the paint.

The last player to average more than that was Shaq in 2001-02 pic.twitter.com/QuSEcyeYtR

Zion knows that layups and dunks are good and so only takes layups and dunks.

i thought the trade worked for both teams in difft ways, but toronto getting another guard who can score was big for them imo

class project pat (m bison), Sunday, 11 April 2021 13:43 (three years ago) link

makes u think

A few weeks back, Daryl Morey appeared on the Rights to Ricky Sanchez podcast, and in the course of answering a question about the state of analytics with respect to individual defense, had this to say: “I would say public-domain, all-in-one defensive measures are all really bad. I think internally, several teams have some pretty OK ones, not good. Defense is hard…it’s so dependent on what the coach wants them to do.”

lag∞n, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 14:21 (three years ago) link

imo catch all stats have developed as much as they can and are very limited by the inputs available

micah, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 21:02 (three years ago) link

thats true but i think even more than that the big problem with basketball stats is described in the last sentence there, everything in basketball is under the scheme, and furthermore the scheme is schemed for team cooperation

lag∞n, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 21:17 (three years ago) link

the catch all offense stats are also really bad, maybe not as bad as the defensive ones but very bad none the less, the big advantage they have is its easier to measure offensive usage

all stats are going to need to be understood in the context of team and scheme, and the catch all stats make it very hard by being very complicated and particularly by attempting and failing to contextualize their results themselves, where granular stats lend themselves more to contextualization, tho with many of those you have the problem of bad data eg all "contested threes" are not equal
