relistening to isn’t anything, loveless, the eps comp, and m b v a lot lately, remembering this is the best band ever

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 01:07 (three years ago) link

Didn't everything just get reissued a couple years ago, including EPs collection? Or have I just completely lost track of time?

Soundslike, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 01:15 (three years ago) link

try almost ten years ago! May 2012

loveless & isn't anything got a new vinyl remaster in 2018 too

ufo, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 01:36 (three years ago) link

there is someone on the mbv reddit who a few days ago correctly predicted that there'd be something today and is now saying they've heard new material is coming august/september in addition to whatever re-releases are coming on wednesday. don't want to get my hopes up too much though lol

ufo, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 01:46 (three years ago) link

lmao if another new my bloody valentine album comes out before the wrens album

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 02:05 (three years ago) link

Well the Avalanches started releasing records at a faster pace so maybe Kevin's all "Oh yeah, should start doing more here."

Yeah, but them shits is long goooone.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 03:51 (three years ago) link

I remember back in the day that Kev made noises about the CDs being the most accurate rendition of Loveless, refused to send promos on cassette I think. I believe the unique thing about the 2018 vinyl was that they reassembled the track segues from the original analogue elements because it’d all been done in the digital domain originally.

Nice to see that Kevin, on top of a load of cables on his vast and beautiful mixing console, has the same cheapo Tandy SPL meter that I've had for the last 25 years :)

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 09:33 (three years ago) link

This has made me look up SPL meter. So I've almost learned something, though oddly I can't see one in the video above.

Looking forward to whatever is coming, but dear god Kevin sort out the barnet mate.

though oddly I can't see one in the video above

Between 0:46 and 0:48, bottom right-hand corner, during one of the annoying "filmed on Super-8 in the '70s" filtered segments. Just jumped out at me.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 11:07 (three years ago) link

That's the precision we need.

The 2018 vinyl reissues of both albums are stupendous, they sound completely amazing and the sleeves are really nice too. It's a shame they are out of print and go for so much money second hand. It would be nice if they gave mbv the same treatment since that sleeve is shit.

I'd just like to get a good copy of Isn't Anything on vinyl and not have to pay more than $30 for it. Why is that so much to ask

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 16:22 (three years ago) link

the CD reissue if isn’t anything sounded excellent if anyone cares

brimstead, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 18:29 (three years ago) link

sounded... i believe it still sounds excellent

brimstead, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 18:29 (three years ago) link

Relistening to mbv now for the first time in a while...I think I like it a lot more now than I did when it came out. In 2013 it felt kind of disappointing, but almost anything they released would have seemed that way in comparison to Loveless. I wanted it to be another collection of melted power-pop tunes like Loveless, and instead it's a collection of experiments in repetition and mood. I appreciate what it's doing a lot more, these days.

m b v was solid as hell. you guys are crazy.

dunno what's coming, but i'd be stoked even for just an ep. three or four new valentines jams for the summer? count me in.

alternately if this is just an announcement of reissued material, that's going to be fairly underwhelming.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 19:51 (three years ago) link

m b v was always another masterpiece

imago, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 20:57 (three years ago) link

hell yeah, so great

brimstead, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 21:03 (three years ago) link

I love how the album kind of self destructs towards the end in the midst of its own massive sonic storm

brimstead, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 21:04 (three years ago) link

I'm now wondering if this announcement will tie in with RSD

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 21:19 (three years ago) link

there's definitely a new album, the real news here is that the logistics & protocols for big tours for acts with older fan bases are lining back up. which is good!

Did anyone buy it on vinyl? Was the pressing good?

the pressing was ok. unfortunately, by the time it arrived at my doorstep, the cover/gatefold had tears and rips in two different places

Both of the copies i swiped from urban outfitters had this issue. Everyone i know who bought it reported this also.

He is the mirror to my Dorian Gray. (Maybe.)

I keep mistaking him for Brian May these days.

mbv disbanded, reissuing loveless in original CD form, raffle for mailing list, coupons to follow

https://www.dominomusic.com/news/uk/my-bloody-valentine-sign-to-domino-announce-full-catalogue-reissue

ah there are actually some new remasters - the standard edition vinyls are "mastered from new hi-res uncompressed digital sources". sounds like the deluxe vinyls are the same as the 2018 analogue remasters though and all the digital releases are the same as 2012.

ufo, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 07:52 (three years ago) link

is this the kind of "full catalogue reissue" where their full catalogue is not, in fact, reissued?

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 08:44 (three years ago) link

it's their full catalogue as much as they haven't really acknowledged the existence of anything before "you made me realise" for over 30 years now and i didn't really expect them to start now

ufo, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 08:58 (three years ago) link

the vinyl reissues are going fast, I've picked up a standard Loveless and the deluxe Isn't Anything, and the EPs/Rarities thing which comes in a fancy CD case apparently.

Sven Vath's scary carpet (Neil S), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:00 (three years ago) link

Ordered the deluxe Isn't Anything and Loveless. Got the Plain Recordings reissue 15 years ago and have a og Loveless cd. The former looks gorgeous but is supposedly sourced from cd masters so decided to go for these new reissues. Got the m b v vinyl when it came out and though I agree the quality of the cover isn't much (mine arrived in great shape though) I figured there's no need to get the new one. The EP/rarities collection is great.

willem, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:11 (three years ago) link

yeah I picked up m b v on vinyl when it came out too, seems fine to me in all respects so no need to get another copy of that

Sven Vath's scary carpet (Neil S), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:14 (three years ago) link

Two bands with one name.

armoured van, Holden (sic), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:18 (three years ago) link

well ecstasy & strawberry wine are at least the classic line-up and you can hear how they got to the you made me realise EP from those, but anything from before those may have well been a completely different band yeah

ufo, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:28 (three years ago) link

Yeah, even with Billinda in, and as you say being able to draw lines to the later work, they clearly haven’t *become* the second band yet.

(Every band after 1994 should have considered following the Beastie Boys’ lead in reissuing their early, developmental work on a compilation called Some Old Bullshit. Just make it as universal a title as Greatest Hits, that signals which kind of listener it’s for.)

armoured van, Holden (sic), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:37 (three years ago) link

is there US distro for these reissues? All I'm finding so far are the mbv site and bleep

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:48 (three years ago) link

nevermind, I'm dumb, accidentally selected "US Outlying Islands" from the dropdown menu which explained the exorbitant shipping charge despite the prices being in USD. All sorted now.

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 10:01 (three years ago) link

NYT piece I’m too lazy to link to bc I finished reading and closed the tab but they’re recording two new albums, one traditionally MBV-sounding and the other more experimental? okay
