Thanks, Tib. The pandemic seems to have been productive in my case.

https://cutternumbers.bandcamp.com/album/constant-lowrider-cn-mixtape-21

i made a "mixtape" of instrumental tracks i recorded in the past year, mostly sampler-driven with some guitar. i mixed by bouncing back and forth between 4-track and computer, adding effects and vocals and other sounds. it's pretty lo-fi and crunchy but it turned out how i wanted, like if the original songs were being blasted out of a cheap loud car stereo.

This is cool, love to hear those sample pack sounds get used!

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 2 April 2021 15:59 (three years ago) link

I did a fun project with a local band, where they pick a scale + bpm and all record parts without hearing each other (in this case E Dorian + 110 bpm). Then each member produces a track using the stems. They invited me to contribute to a track to this one, so it's somewhere in-between a remix and an original. Would love to try this with other people where I'm involved in generating the stems too.

two new tracks.

Anyone who lived in Scotland in the early 00's will recognise the samples...

Ooh a couple of blasts from the past right there. Sounding good!

paolo, Saturday, 3 April 2021 08:31 (three years ago) link

been trying to learn Ableton, pretty interesting/different work flow

also got a mellotron vst, kinda set out to do something like autumn sweater by yo la tengo but a little more electronic feeling

love the sound of that mellotron, the guitar is great too (tremolo effect?)

class project pat (m bison), Saturday, 3 April 2021 15:10 (three years ago) link

thanks! I think there might be some tremelo, I use an amp modeling plugin a friend of mine who runs a studio recommended called S-Gear by Scuffham Amps, it's not as well known and it doesn't have tons of amps and effects but I think it sounds pretty real

I usually just track guitar DI then flip through presets until something sounds good do I don't always know what goes into it

hopefully this will work:

i have only started attempting to play guitar and sing at the same for the last couple months, so i'm hoping that if and when additional family members die, my rendition of "sweetness follows" will be a little easier! i still have shakey voice right now, but whatever

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 18:55 (three years ago) link

That was really pretty, Zach.

DJI, Thursday, 8 April 2021 15:24 (three years ago) link

holy crap i can only listen to like one half of one line of that song before getting all the way weepy -- kudos to you z for being able to play it over and over and over and record yourself & share it <3 that's therapy

hi,

i have an LP coming out soon. it's about the spirits of two sisters from 1906. here is one song from it

maelin, Thursday, 8 April 2021 22:12 (three years ago) link

thanks DJI and LL! helps that it's only two chords, i guess :) i ended up learning how to play most of automatic for the people over the last couple months. i love that so much of their music is pretty easy to play

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Friday, 9 April 2021 16:10 (three years ago) link

Jordan, I finally listened to Poly Pointillism. I haven't broken anything down yet but I really like it - the sounds themselves and the rhythms. I added it to my cart for the next BC Friday.

I liked that track maelin. Sounded like Radio Dept. meets REM meets NMH.

Nice track!

yeah, great stuff Austin! i love the second half when the beat shifts back up and it DriveTime144.1 on the radio

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 12 April 2021 16:35 (three years ago) link

man, thank you guys so much for listening!

also zach, that's literally the nicest comment we've ever received with regards to music. you have no idea how incredibly happy that makes andy to read. the whole idea behind that recording is that he wanted it to sound like a song recorded off the radio from the middle of a mix show onto a cassette tape on an old $100 boombox. this is the recording we were referencing..

Austin - really like that, very chill and spacey. I think I will live my whole life not fully understanding what "balearic" means but it might be? that kinda peaceful yet vaguely nostalgic and melancholy around the edges

sund4r - seconded, and also always appreciate your general knowledge of music on the board, I guess I have always considered myself a "band guy" as opposed to a capital-M Musician like you

Oh, thanks. I've enjoyed your clips as well. Band guys are musicians! :)

Srsly, thanks for the interest! And thanks, paolo, I'm going to listen to your Soundcloud after I get through this last volume of Whiney's noise-rock mix.

paolo I say this every time you share music you've made, but I'm always in awe at how your drums sound and I really admire your sense of restraint in terms of pacing and mood

boxedjoy, Thursday, 15 July 2021 09:43 (two years ago) link

a little um i dunno jazzy/r&b trip hop (?) i dunno downtempo? i don't know electronic genres but basically music they play in a boutique hotel lobby in like 2005 or something

most pleased that i actually *wrote* a guitar solo not just messing around, like how it turned out

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 15 July 2021 14:55 (two years ago) link

Matt you need to add some filtered breaks for the full hotel lobby effect! Or send it to a youtube drummer to shred over.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 15 July 2021 15:39 (two years ago) link

can't get that link to work for some reason

what's an example of a filtered break?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 15 July 2021 21:11 (two years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Weird, trying that link again:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgL8kr7M5gk

I basically meant Amen or Think breakbeat loops with a low-pass filter opening and closing, that's just what I was hearing. :) Like this for ex:

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 30 July 2021 15:53 (two years ago) link

I self-released an EP the other day, probably my most functional club tracks in awhile. I meant to make it a pre-order but got confused by Bandcamp's settings (ie if you publish an album with a future release date, it still releases it right away unless you make it a pre-order), but it didn't really matter. So far I'm happy with my decision to just put it out there rather than continue trying to find a label for it.

https://chants.bandcamp.com/album/quintuple-helix-ep

Also I would prefer not to master my own tracks in general, but I think these came out ok, and it's really the only way to go if you don't want to cancel out the meager profits from Bandcamp/streaming.
