unsure if this is the right thread for such a thing but pretty much all of videos this article lists are great, imo, and a real timewarp mindfuck back to my srs punk/emo/hxc days

the really from album is so much more my speed than the young jesus, though i get the comparison

(young jesus was the album last year i felt myself forcing myself to like... maybe their next album will hit me, but the vocals ultimately ended up grating)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 2 April 2021 16:20 (three years ago) link

I get that!

the opening run of tracks on the Really From album is really striking

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Friday, 2 April 2021 16:24 (three years ago) link

this is the record they made in a laboratory just for me

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 2 April 2021 16:32 (three years ago) link

i ended up buying their previous record verse and it’s also fantastic

Brad's enthusiasm led me to check out Really From, which I should really love from the description, but I feel like it leans a little too far towards the jazz side of their sound than I'd prefer. It's not bad or anything, just doesn't strike the balance I'd prefer.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 April 2021 20:29 (three years ago) link

uh you may like their previous album, verse

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 9 April 2021 20:32 (three years ago) link

I'll check that one out next! Not disparaging it at all, just wasn't the proportions I was expecting I guess.

citizen's life in your glass world is sounding really really good to me today - the experimentation (aka "drum machines and vocal distortion some of the time") suits them and a few of the songs are seriously earwormy

"blue sunday" has a very pleasing chord progression

catching up on listening to links posted itt, that Closer band sounded really good, and I was sitting around trying to figure out who they reminded me of: Submission Hold (kinda)

(thx btw for all the links everyone)

need to hear that citizen record

as well as the record k3v recommended upthread

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 15:52 (three years ago) link

listened to the citizen a couple more times, I think what they're up to here is basically 75% ersatz revival of mid-aughts alt radio stuff(eg bloc party, franz, and especially early killers) with 25% modern emo signifiers - vocals sound quite a bit like manchester orchestra, occasional screaming, downcast lyrics. etc. what sets the best songs apart is the sheer shamelessness - "death dance approximately" in particular is so aggressively hooky that I sort of found it repellent at first!

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 22:38 (three years ago) link

speaking of shameless "show me something that you like and I'll write you something better" is a pretty good fake pete wentz like

lol forgot how brilliant "footloose cannonball brothers" is

i know i compared the album to johnny foreigner vs. everything upthread but it is also extremely is a real boy

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 16 April 2021 13:58 (three years ago) link

very nice

I keep seeing the term "fifth wave emo", does it actually mean anything other than "new emo"

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Friday, 16 April 2021 13:59 (three years ago) link

no

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 16 April 2021 14:08 (three years ago) link

i haven't seen any evidence that suggests we've moved on from the "fourth wave" whatever that is

never heard of palette knife before but this song sounds good

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 16 April 2021 16:51 (three years ago) link

I like their album title

manchester orchestra, origami angel and dawn richard all dropping on 04/30, incredible

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Friday, 16 April 2021 17:05 (three years ago) link

I personally have no ska nostalgia so I have no use for this (clever as the new arrangements are) but some of you might!

this band doesn't really fit this thread but i'm hard pressed to think of a better one, plus everyone here should be into it. whole album is very good. riyl: charly bliss, specific members of boygenius... idk, it's occurring in that spot. full disclosure i'm dating the person who signed this band lol

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 14:57 (two years ago) link

so that's why you hardly post lmao

imago, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 14:59 (two years ago) link

The Alternative posted this with a RIYL of Oso Oso, Fountains of Wayne and Macseal ... i punched a hole in my mouse clicking on it:

https://snowellet.bandcamp.com/album/suburban-indie-rock-star

It's not the best thing you'll hear today but it's pretty snappy indie-pop-rock.

alpine static, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 20:43 (two years ago) link

Good track. So can somebody trace the growth of vocal processing in emo/pop-punk/etc? Feels like it's become more and more prominent, not just Autotune but feeding vocals through all kinds of effects. I don't mind it, I think it can be used well, I'm just unclear on when it really permeated these genres.

Like I love the way Fritz uses vocal fx on this track.

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:21 (two years ago) link

it seems unfair that there's already a band called tiny moving parts because that's the perfect description of their sound

the samples are a riot

gami gang assemble
