(VHS’s chart is from that page)

beer drops on my keytar (morrisp), Thursday, 25 March 2021 22:22 (three years ago) link

Those numbers aren't the absolute proof the entertainment industry is better or worse, which we are likely to never have, and very much besides the point, but considering how abuse is pervasive in society and the entertainment industry is just a small part of the economy, trying to come to conclusions about how sexual abuse operate based on the entertainment industry's experiences is not likely to come up with very serviceable solutions.

I don't think it's a coincidence the #metoo movement truly gained traction when the victims were beloved celebrities.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 25 March 2021 22:27 (three years ago) link

it also doesn't really contradict what im saying? haha

the worst industries are definitely the ones with low-paid occupations and a workforce that skews female and racialized and i concede that all the focus on the entertainment industry (and things like university campuses) and the sort of victims that "matter' because of their social status is a little counterproductive/wrong

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 25 March 2021 22:28 (three years ago) link

You said it was “worse than the average industry” though

beer drops on my keytar (morrisp), Thursday, 25 March 2021 22:35 (three years ago) link

and i stand by that

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 25 March 2021 22:35 (three years ago) link

That chart doesn't account for the size of each industry, so it's hard to say.

jmm, Thursday, 25 March 2021 22:41 (three years ago) link

It is hard to say (as VHS also commented), but I don’t see any reason to assume that’s the case. When Joe Schmo from Allied Chemical gets a harassment claim against him, it doesn’t make the news like it goes with a famous actor or director.

The majority of sexual abusers are anonymous and receive no media coverage.

thank god the percentage of media coverage something gets isn't the only fucking metric that counts for anything.

I was making a point about the entertainment industry and how the coverage might distort some points of view, please leave me alone if you aren’t to engage in good faith and in the spirit of discussion.

Thanks for the chart VHS but I just don't believe mining is the paradise for women the data suggests

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 26 March 2021 01:21 (three years ago) link

It doesn't say it is, if anything, chart might suggest that it is almost impossible for a women to file a sexual harassment charges.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 26 March 2021 01:23 (three years ago) link

so Har Mar's statement is

1) It's really brave of these women to come forward
2) I take this very seriously
3) I was really fucked up for a long period of time, abused drugs and alcohol and did a lot of things I regret
4) Regardless, these women are liars

obviously the people victimized by the asshole are going to care, and the employers of the asshole are going to care, and they are really going to care (or at least the civic agency's attorneys are) if the abuse happened on the job or with a client ... and if it involved a child ... geez. Is it going to become an HBO docuseries? Probably not.

This dude (who was apparently once a rapper) hit it big on Twitter this week, and then—

beer drops on my keytar (morrisp), Saturday, 27 March 2021 22:01 (three years ago) link

This one is so weird... I feel dumb for really wanting to know if he faked the shrimp (probably) but what grosses me out even more is the detail that he was going into a box of cinnamon toast crunch for seconds.

I heard him on a podcast once and I read his book. I mainly remember it as some breezy turn of the century hiphop ephemera stuff that seemed to keep coming back to the fact that he's positive he'd be a billionaire if Eminem didn't break the moment he did.

maf you one two (maffew12), Sunday, 28 March 2021 00:39 (three years ago) link

It’s very strange because he really was the white rap nerd who got to do things like write for rap nerd TV shows and write rap nerd books and release rap nerd trivia games and sell rap nerd lapel pins and write for award shows and do a lot of the shit that a lot of the ILX goon cru probably could do just as well but he always did seem a little smarter and funnier but not all that exceptionally different than a lot of ppl. And then this all comes out and it’s like “Oh, wait, there were some other things going on there”

bruce spr!ngisH3r3 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 28 March 2021 02:01 (three years ago) link

is that why Cinnamon Toast Crunch was on sale the other day? I really don't understand this guy.

sarahell, Sunday, 28 March 2021 02:06 (three years ago) link

I doubt he’s faking the cereal thing (and it is gross/disturbing), but he was kind of irritatingly cutsie about it on Twitter. Like, I know you’re a “creative,” but don’t treat something like a joke/meme and then get all indignant at the company’s social media team.

Thanks for the chart VHS but I just don't believe mining is the paradise for women the data suggests

The one woman I know who worked in mining was absolutely sexually harassed and undermined on her job due to being a woman, and changed jobs because of it.

North Country is a 2005 American drama film directed by Niki Caro, starring Charlize Theron, Frances McDormand, Sean Bean, Richard Jenkins, Michelle Monaghan, Jeremy Renner, Woody Harrelson, and Sissy Spacek. The screenplay by Michael Seitzman was inspired by the 2002 book Class Action: The Story of Lois Jenson and the Landmark Case That Changed Sexual Harassment Law by Clara Bingham and Laura Leedy Gansler, which chronicled the case of Jenson v. Eveleth Taconite Company.
...
While working a job washing hair, Josey reconnects with an old acquaintance, Glory Dodge, who works at the local iron mine and suggests Josey do the same, as a job there pays six times more than what Josey's making now. Josey's pursuit of and securing the job further strains her relationship with Hank, who also works at the mine and believes women shouldn't be working there, so she and her children move in with Glory and her husband, Kyle.

Josey quickly befriends several other female workers at the mine and soon realizes the women are constant targets for sexual harassment and humiliation by most of their male co-workers, who, like Hank, believe the women are taking jobs more appropriate for men.
