otm, my sister's kids are completely different people now. huge regret that my partner and I decided to just stay home christmas 2019
this is gonna pretty self-important but my kids were 5 and 3 when this started, now they're 6 and 4, and that's a huge chunk of their development that my family just missed. they've changed so much physically, mentally, and emotionally. I feel sad that they didn't get to see it happen.
― frogbs, Monday, 22 March 2021 20:24 (three years ago) link
totally. I mean I live in Montreal and they live in Chicago, so it's not like I'd see them more than a couple times a year max, but they were 3 and 5 last time, now 5 and 7. On the plus side, the 7-year-old is now verbally and socially adept enough to call me with no parental involvement, which has been fun (sadly, the 5-year-old absolutely refuses to video chat, so I feel like I don't really know him).

on a lighter note, I too am excited for a professional haircut
I'll be fully vaccinated plus the two weeks on April 12. All I've got in mind is eating a nice leisurely dinner outdoors at a restaurant again. I would love to pick up dudes again at bars, but the unvaccinated sleazo count in Miami-Dade County is exorbitant.
We'll have to reexamine our dating practices, no? "Show me your vac card before responding to my OKCupid message."

I briefly contemplated trying to pick up someone at the vaccination clinic, but none of the men were my type.

I just want two weeks off. This past year has been some aggro-stressful B.S. in the bowels of the IT industry.

"Show me your vac card before responding to my OKCupid message."
Why would you care if you're vaccinated yourself?
― groovemaaan, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 01:10 (three years ago) link
For the same reason i dont want to be around people who havent been wearing masks in public

There are a lot of things I can't wait to do, but making concrete plans at this point feels too much like tempting fate for me.

i totally get that, jon. like i'm not booking plane tickets just yet, merely feeling of something like ☆anticipation☆ rather than dread for the first time in over a year. there's still fuck of a long way to go, for sure! but more people are getting jabbed every day (never enough, but always more) and soon... well, soon the mass shootings will start up again in earnest and it's back to numbly doomscrolling on the couch, hahahahaha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

i did book plane tickets, two weeks after my second vaccination (which is happening april 8); visiting my vaccinated parents in new orleans
hopefully i didn't tempt fate too bad

Ha, no, no intention of disparaging anyone who has the shots or has them on the calendar! I'd say that is plenty of reason to make concrete plans. I was just saying without any timeline or shots on the radar, it's tough for me to get my hopes up.
Will say it's going to be a really hard summer watching from the sidelines.

lol i figured jon, i just am like also crossing my fingers that something silly doesn't happen between now and me getting my second vaccine

that's it, i am absolutely 100% going kayaking this summer. COME AT ME, FATE!

n.b. please do not actually come at me
No big plans for travel this summer, just the usual camping/hiking around the Pacific NW. We need to renew our passports this year and after that we'll think about next year. For me the biggest thing will be feeling more at my ease while doing otherwise normal things, like entering enclosed public spaces for a purpose less exacting than supplying the bare necessities of life. Including public toilets when I'm away from home!

ease, i remember ease, am really looking forward to being able to breathe in public again without envisioning a miasma of plague ghosts colonizing my juicy airsacks.

I traveled internationally for the first time (as an adult) in 2019 and I was really amped up about seeing other places in the world, which didn't end up happening. So I guess we'll re-plan that trip to Istanbul for 2022 or something like that!

really really really want to go to the beach. feel the sand and the cold frothy waves on my feet, gentle breeze across my skin, ruffling my hair, smell the seagrass and water and sun, the cry of the gulls and sussuration of the sea.

― DJI, Tuesday, 6 April 2021 19:57 (three years ago) link
i don’t live on the beach, if that’s the question
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 22:20 (three years ago) link
The Oregon coast is about a two hour drive from our house. We plan to go there next Tuesday, once it is established that our 2nd dose of Pfizer this Thursday doesn't lay us too low to enjoy ourselves. We figure a four day interval between the injection and the trip should suffice.
― Judge Roi Behan (Aimless), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 22:26 (three years ago) link
I’m just saying if you live by the beach, go to the beach! You’re not going to get COVID at the beach.
― DJI, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 05:25 (three years ago) link
Yeah, I'm honestly a little confused about the connection between vaccinations and going to the beach. It really shouldn't be an issue either way unless it's jammed packed with people.
― Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 05:41 (three years ago) link
When the Ocean City (MD) boardwalk reopened, the news was full of images of crowds who had rushed back. I went for a few days at the end of the season; on the beach itself it wasn't hard to keep 6+ feet away from other people.
I just got a text confirming my second Pfizer shot on Saturday. LOL gluttony, but for me the pandemic will be over when I'm able to feed my face at a Chinese buffet.

If your beach looks like Coney Island in the 1950s, I'd steer clear. Of course, I'd give the same advice without a pandemic.
