Stevie, I do one of two or three routes, usually. The one I like best is my house (54 and Locust, more or less) through MillCreek and Mantua over to the Belmont Plateau via Belmont, Chamounix Drive down to the Strawb Mansion bridge, up into East Park past all the mansions, right at Coltrane's/the driving range, down to the museum...I used to take the river path back up through Penn and into west, but since there's that big detour still, I've been either going back via West River or giving myself an easier time and going back via Spring Garden. I also do the opposite ride, which is much hillier, but puts one out on the massive downhill near Parkside and the shopping center on 52nd...that downhill is one of my favorites in the city.

Let it be known that I never thought I was the sort of person who would (or could) have such a thing. Always associated them with scumbag porn directors with gold chains bouncing in their chest hair while they smoked a cigar and talked on a cell phone in a New Jersey accent.

But then the inflatable/portable ones became (relatively) accessible and, given COVID, started to seem like a possibly forgivable indulgence. Three hundred dollars, an extension cord, a garden hose, and a six-foot circle of space. Badabing.

(we have a home art studio and i got it set up pretty cool)

can i get some details on this, i am about to set up one in a new place in 2 weeks

― typo hell 13: crypto in insidious, though (Karl Malone), Monday, October 18, 2021 9:25 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

talking mostly about vibes bc the studio itself is lacking in some fundamentals -- a sink, mostly -- and i have yet to set up some really cool equipment -- a family member's etching press! but once i do some organization we have some cool stuff. we have the press, a lot of artists' watercolors i've accumulated, a ton of nice cotton papers - arches watercolor stuff that i pick up whenever it's on sale, a lot of printmaking paper from the family member. i don't want to deal with the expense & hassle of putting in a whole bathroom up here, but i'd love to have just a utility sink. that would make it really great.

but the vibes are really nice i have to say. it's an old house and the attic is huge. i brought up a ton of plants, the 100-year old pine floors are in kinda rough shape and were never meant to be finished but they have a cool really dark stain and look great imo. i fuckin love attic spaces especially in old houses, i feel lucky. still doing the cheap midwestern city thing and i don't regret it

marcos, Tuesday, 19 October 2021 17:36 (two years ago) link

the vibe is the most important! i am going to miss my current studio, my first real one i've ever had. i only got to spend about 4 months with it, but now i'm moving and can't afford to have a separate studio, so it's back to the "apartment studio" situation again in 2 weeks for me.

i think i can make it work (i will make it work!) but my main practical concern is how to keep my dog away from my paints. she has a bad habit of licking paint (caught her twice before), for one thing, but also she sheds a bunch and it's so fucking annoying to be perpetually cleaning out dog hair out of wet paintings.

but i think, if i remember the floor plan of the new place correctly (wish i had more photos or a blueprint!), there isn't really a space where i can close the door or separate it from Bird (my dog). the "studio" is likely to be just in a big open room, what would normally maybe be a dining room area.

i'm having this nightmare vision of catching Bird with a thick slab of Cadmium Lemon across her face and tongue, then waking up the next morning to find a fresh batch of dog hair on every canvas in the room
