"eternal you" is totally atdi/trail of dead-brand emo and the rest of the songs are total anthems. "down university" HAS to be the next single

more rolling punk/hardcore 2021 than emo pop punk but into this a bunch

funny I heard "mistakes and regrets" the other day and realized that while not really an emo band ToD did write 4 or 5 perfect emo songs xp

digging the gruff vocal style on this:

south korean lo-fi shoegaze/emo, reminds me of diary and inlet among many other things

a similar sense of ambition facing off against lo-fi recording limitations to deathconsciousness except the drums don't sound like total shit

the really from album is so much more my speed than the young jesus, though i get the comparison

(young jesus was the album last year i felt myself forcing myself to like... maybe their next album will hit me, but the vocals ultimately ended up grating)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 2 April 2021 16:20 (three years ago) link

I get that!

the opening run of tracks on the Really From album is really striking

this is the record they made in a laboratory just for me

Brad's enthusiasm led me to check out Really From, which I should really love from the description, but I feel like it leans a little too far towards the jazz side of their sound than I'd prefer. It's not bad or anything, just doesn't strike the balance I'd prefer.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 April 2021 20:29 (three years ago) link

uh you may like their previous album, verse

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 9 April 2021 20:32 (three years ago) link

I'll check that one out next! Not disparaging it at all, just wasn't the proportions I was expecting I guess.

citizen's life in your glass world is sounding really really good to me today - the experimentation (aka "drum machines and vocal distortion some of the time") suits them and a few of the songs are seriously earwormy

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 15:20 (three years ago) link

catching up on listening to links posted itt, that Closer band sounded really good, and I was sitting around trying to figure out who they reminded me of: Submission Hold (kinda)

need to hear that citizen record

as well as the record k3v recommended upthread

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 15:52 (three years ago) link

listened to the citizen a couple more times, I think what they're up to here is basically 75% ersatz revival of mid-aughts alt radio stuff(eg bloc party, franz, and especially early killers) with 25% modern emo signifiers - vocals sound quite a bit like manchester orchestra, occasional screaming, downcast lyrics. etc. what sets the best songs apart is the sheer shamelessness - "death dance approximately" in particular is so aggressively hooky that I sort of found it repellent at first!

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 22:38 (three years ago) link

speaking of shameless "show me something that you like and I'll write you something better" is a pretty good fake pete wentz like

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 13 September 2021 13:40 (two years ago) link

thrice album is their best in a very long while, splits the difference between their exploratory radioheadish side and what i'm gonna characterize as their house style of "sludge emo" without spilling over into butt rock (both of the albums before this are guilty)

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Friday, 17 September 2021 17:56 (two years ago) link

the new underoath song is way too good to keep in just their thread

two weeks pass...

No talk/love for the new TWIABP record, Illusory Walls, released yesterday? Figured it was perfect for this thread.

I am really enjoying its ambition, scope and almost, at times, progressive metal edge, but I can see it alienating their more traditional or emo-revival fans. Also not sure if those aforementioned qualities will hold up well upon repeated listens, but for now it is probably my fave AOTY.
