Academy Award-nominated film Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

― Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Monday, March 15, 2021 9:22 AM (four hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

THE GODFATHER was the first movie franchise to have its first and second films both nominated for Best Screenplay. the second movie franchise? BORAT.

ha!

Lakeith is obviously the lead. Kaluuya would be fine to class as co-lead or supporting.

armoured van, Holden (sic), Monday, 15 March 2021 18:58 (three years ago) link

boseman is almost certainly gonna win best actor, and they were looking to avoid that buzzsaw.

I can see that argument, but doesn't putting them both in the same category risk vote splitting that might harm both? But maybe this is why I'm not a highly compensated studio exec.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 March 2021 19:00 (three years ago) link

i'd say that they're the favorites in the supporting actor category, but raci could solidify support and win if there's vote-splitting.

i personally think stanfield was fine, but he's been much better in other things. kaluuya was a force of nature.

caek or daeth (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 March 2021 19:02 (three years ago) link

borat, ma rainey, and judas are the only movies nommed in the big 6 that i've seen

caek or daeth (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 March 2021 19:03 (three years ago) link

I know they really want to give Boseman the best actor Oscar, and I'm OK with that but tbh his role could just as easily have been classified as supporting.

he's the main driver of the plot and the emotion, i'd say he's definitely a lead. also learned recently that his role was originally played on stage by charles s. dutton

caek or daeth (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 March 2021 19:10 (three years ago) link

*idk why i wrote emotion when i meant "conflict" but whatever

caek or daeth (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 March 2021 19:10 (three years ago) link

I guess Stanfield was *submitted* by the studio as a lead, but the academy voted to nominate him as supporting?

So who makes these calls? The voting members of the acting branch, whose votes determine the nominees, regardless of studio campaigns or critics’ awards.

According to academy rules, “A performance by an actor or actress in any role shall be eligible for nomination either for the leading role or supporting role categories ... The determination as to whether a role is a leading or supporting role shall be made individually by members of the branch at the time of balloting.”

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 15 March 2021 19:37 (three years ago) link

Correct.

Just to be clear, WB did not campaign #JudasAndTheBlackMessiah as a leadless movie. Voters who believed that Stanfield was supporting were simply plentiful enough for him to make the category. #Oscars pic.twitter.com/zOKFyQkPqd

jaymc, Monday, 15 March 2021 19:58 (three years ago) link

good to know. would've been a bummer for stanfield to miss out due to people voting for him in different categories.

caek or daeth (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 March 2021 19:59 (three years ago) link

Lakeith is obviously the lead. Kaluuya would be fine to class as co-lead or supporting.

― armoured van, Holden (sic), Monday, March 15, 2021 1:58 PM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink

Also correct. I saw a breakdown of screen time, and Stanfield has just slightly more (like 49 minutes vs. 46 minutes), but he's also the audience surrogate, which makes him more of a lead.

one month passes...

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/apr/22/the-most-awkward-oscars-moments-ranked

I've no recollection of this

"Possibly the least showy moment on this list, but easily the most excruciating. The Vice hair and makeup team didn’t seem to know each other when they arrived onstage to collect their award. One of them started a speech, then stopped as his colleague unfurled her own speech. She ordered him to read it. He refused. She started reading it. A third winner, holding her own speech, haltingly joined in. They started to get played off, but ploughed on nonetheless. As they collectively fumbled to decode some handwriting on one of the now several speeches, the camera cut away. They kept going. The stage lights switched off."

piscesx, Thursday, 22 April 2021 20:33 (three years ago) link

Without looking at the list, curious if they included the Hearts and Minds acceptance speech in '75 or whenever. Will check the link.

They didn’t, too niche i expect.

Faulty memory. I looked at the clip, and not nearly as incendiary as my 45-year-old memory of it. I thought there was loud booing, like with Michael Moore. Not at all; the crowd sounds quite on their side. I think, later, there may have been someone speak disparagingly from the stage about Schneider--Bob Hope or John Wayne?--but I'm not sure.

Canned laughter?? taking a cue from the Brits there.

Isn't best supporting actor usually first?

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 00:09 (three years ago) link

this was always going to be awkward and boring but they've really outdone themselves!

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:01 (three years ago) link

That 'talking to the nominees from the stage' thing sucked ten years ago, God knows who thought they should revive it.

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 01:06 (three years ago) link

Those introductions from Laura Dern to the supporting actors! Is that what you are referring to? Every acceptance speech other than Zhao's has been ridiculously long too.

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:11 (three years ago) link

Sorry, I'm only half watching but thanks for the link-up, piscesx.

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:12 (three years ago) link

I liked that they presented the best director award so close to the beginning, Chloe Zhao totally deserved it and she gave an admirably short acceptance speech

Dan S, Monday, 26 April 2021 01:12 (three years ago) link

i started this half and hour or so late so i could ffwd through commercials and endless sanctimony and boring shit i'm already out of buffer

i don't think so

Woah that Octopus film looks great. That's a sentence i never thought i'd write.

xp No Supporting Actress yet.

If Glenn Close doesn't win she makes history as the most nominated actor *ever* to not win.

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 01:50 (three years ago) link

Peter O'Toole will join her for a drink.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 April 2021 01:53 (three years ago) link

re Octopus it's nice, I liked it a lot and there is a lot of beautiful underwater photography but the anthropomorphizing is kind over the top

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 02:20 (three years ago) link

Blade runner was one of the first movies where ford didn't even try to act and just read off his lines. It needed different cuts to work around his shit performance.

Didn't need a speech about tolerance from the gay homophobe. Especially not one decrying intolerance towards cops.

Glenn Close's monologue on "Da Butt" is her most moving screen performance since 1988.

Just imagine, if we hadn't had the Questlove music quiz come of these dead people may have got more than a fraction of a second of commemoration. Some of them disappeared so fast you didn't have the chance to read the name.

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 02:59 (three years ago) link

what? best picture now?

Cocteau Twinks (jed_), Monday, 26 April 2021 03:01 (three years ago) link

who's the 'gay homophobe'?

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:09 (three years ago) link

Tyler Perry, allegedly.

this is a fucking mess of a production. the sound is terrible. no clips? what was that ten minute torturous guess if the song won an oscar game? Questlove's DJing is bad, bad, bad, utterly context-free songs from 'movies' disconnected from everything...

SPEECH BY: DANIEL KALUUYA

FILM: "Judas and the Black Messiah"

Man, man. Thank you God. Thank you God. I can’t be here without your guidance and you’re your protection. I’d like to thank my mum. Thank you so much for pouring into me. You gave me everything. You gave me your factory settings. [laughter] So I can stand at my fullest height. Um, love to my sister, love to my niece, my friends, my family, everyone I love, from London Town to Kampala. I’d like to thank my team, incredible support. Bro, we out here, yo. Man. Man. It's good, come and dance. Ryan, Zinzi, Sev, Proximity, everyone at Proximity. Charles King, man, Everyone at MACRO, Bron, Participant. Nigel. Everyone at Warner Brothers. Thank you so much for everything you poured into this. Everything you poured into this. It’s so hard to make a film and make a film about a man like this, and they made it possible, they made it happen. I share this honor with the gift that is Lakeith Stanfield. The light that is [applause], yeah yeah, the light that is Dominique Fishback. [applause] The incredible cast, the incredible crew –you know what I mean -- Lucas Brothers for starting the journey. Will Berson. See, you know it's so incredible to look around you, to look around you and just go . . . you’re inspired by not only what they do but who they are. So that's amazing. Chairman Fred Junior and Mama Akua, thank you so much for allowing us into your life and into your story. Thank you, thank you for trusting us, you know, with your truth. I appreciate you deeply and it's an honor to partner up and stand side by side with you. And to Chairman Fred Hampton. Bro, man. Man, what a man. What a man. How blessed we are that we lived in a lifetime where he existed, do you know what I’m saying? I like thank you for your light. He was on this earth for 21 years, 21 years, and he found a way to feed kids, breakfast, educate kids, give free medical care, against all the odds. He showed, he showed me, he taught me him. Him, Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, the Black Panther Party. They showed me how to love myself. And with that love, they overflowed into the black community and into other communities. And they showed us that the power of union, the power of unity, that when they play divide and conquer, we say unite and ascend. Thank you so much for showing me myself. And yeah, man, there's so much work to do guys, and that's on everyone in this room, this ain’t no single man job. I look at this room, and I look at everyone, every single one of you, you got work to do, you know what I’m saying. And I'm going to get back to work, Tuesday morning, because tonight I'm going up. [laughter] We’re going up, you know what I mean, we’re enjoying ourselves tonight because, what, we got to celebrate, celebrate life man, we're breathing, we’re walking. It's incredible it's incredible. Like it's incredible, my mum, my dad. They had sex. It's amazing. Like do you know what I’m saying, I'm here. You know what I mean? [laughter] So I'm so happy to be alive, so I’m going to celebrate that tonight, do you know what I’m saying? And I appreciate every single person in the room, appreciate everyone watching at home, you know, love, peace, love and onwards, we go again. Appreciate you. [applause]
