Surprised Crack Cloud aren't on here, tbh (a band I do not dislike but find it a bit bewildering how loved they are as everything is so smooooooth and perfectly rendered).

Lol CC really is about as cool as a band can get suffering from a potentially debilitating Gorillaz influence

more haim than good (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 11 March 2021 15:38 (three years ago) link

Most of these are bands I was really excited about when I first read about them but none of them really did it for me, with the exception of Protomartyr, so I'm voting for them (I might have voted for Shopping had they been included).

Dinsdale, Thursday, 11 March 2021 21:42 (three years ago) link

i think this is protomartyr vs. girl band for me and picking one between those two is v v difficult

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 March 2021 21:43 (three years ago) link

the made up one is obviously back country, new road

ufo, Thursday, 11 March 2021 21:48 (three years ago) link

if only

imago, Thursday, 11 March 2021 21:49 (three years ago) link

i voted for protomartyr. i appreciate that they found their sound right away and have stuck with it with only minor modifications (eg the subtle extra instrumentation on the newest album). iceage and tropical fuck storm would be my backups.
i also want to say i appreciate that this poll mostly stayed away from the "post-punk = sounds exactly like joy division" trend.

na (NA), Thursday, 11 March 2021 21:52 (three years ago) link

brad i didn't even know you rated protomartyr!

three weeks pass...

the new dry cleaning album is very good

na (NA), Monday, 5 April 2021 15:30 (three years ago) link

i remember liking the EP but the LP is hitting harder

na (NA), Monday, 5 April 2021 15:30 (three years ago) link

ymmv depending on your tolerance for wordy spoken vocals

na (NA), Monday, 5 April 2021 15:34 (three years ago) link

i'm late to the party but speaking of wordy spoken vocals i feel like i should mention Parquet Courts... and idk if Deli Girls is to heavy for the thread but they're rad too.

what's the dry cleaning album sound like? that is an A+ very good boring band name.

davey, Monday, 5 April 2021 15:35 (three years ago) link

oh wait it sounds like wordy spoken vocals, i might check that out

davey, Monday, 5 April 2021 15:35 (three years ago) link

It sounds like Life Without Buildings

enochroot, Monday, 5 April 2021 19:51 (three years ago) link

aren't the vocals in LWB a lot more animated? i never listened to them much

na (NA), Monday, 5 April 2021 19:55 (three years ago) link

yeah the vox here are not just spoken, they're sort of...maybe not outright indifferent, but drained of any sort of animation. I get that that's what they're going for and it kinda works on a couple songs but I find it wearisome over a whole LP.

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 02:34 (three years ago) link

I double-checked to make sure, and yep: the quotidian consumer junk dancing in montage to "Magic of Meghan" still enchants. (This is, mind you, a two-days-old discovery for me.)

enjoying Dry Cleaning maybe? finding the guitars much more of a draw than the vocalist mind

wilderness was awesome

― davey, Monday, April 5, 2021 11:35 AM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

something i would not have anticipated ten years ago is parquet courts becoming one of the most influential bands; every local scene has like 3-5 bands who sound just like them

flopson, Tuesday, 6 April 2021 14:10 (three years ago) link

I'm surprised Cabbage haven't been mentioned. Feel like they were on the verge of breaking through a couple of years ago. They weren't great.

I haven't heard every band on the list, but a lot of them don't do anything for me. Idles and the accompanying hype in particular I find very tiresome. A lot of these bands I just find myself wishing I was listening to Art Brut instead. They had the tunes and a cleverness that I just don't get from most of these acts. If Art Brut were just starting out now I probably wouldn't have much interest in them, but at the time they sounded fresh and it was easy to connect with them.

I loved that last Porridge Radio album and the new Goat Girl is one of the best albums of the year so far. I would have voted for one of them if I'd seen the poll in time. I'm still working out the Dry Cleaning album. Florence's vocals and lyrics sell it well, although I do sometimes wish the music was a little more compelling. Half way through I find myself losing interest a bit even though I do like the guitar sounds they use. There's definitely something there though. I've always wanted another band who come close to what Life Without Buildings did and at times I can hear some of that in Dry Cleaning.

Have you tried Drahla? They remind me of LWB, but noisier and saxophonier (and better imo!)

salsa shark, Tuesday, 6 April 2021 18:02 (three years ago) link

I haven't no. I'll check them out. Thanks for the tip!

This video was my first exposure to Post punk band Dry Cleaning. Yep, they’ve got the formula down

Have you tried Yard Act? You won't know you're not listening to Art Brut instead.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 23:59 (three years ago) link

Ha, I just listened to a Yard Act song. I get what you mean. There's another band called Sports Team who do a similar thing. They almost had a number one album last year! I didn't realise just how many of these bands there were now.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 05:03 (three years ago) link

Ha, didn't see this poll previously, but Tropical Fuck Storm are totally a band that was recommended to me by a spotify algorithm and that I thought "Hey, these guys are pretty good!"

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 05:09 (three years ago) link

That's because unlike most of the bands here, they do their own thing and don't sound like Ought

imago, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 08:56 (three years ago) link

, who are themselves derivative and dull

imago, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 08:57 (three years ago) link

Metz is a weird inclusion here? post-grungey band on subpop and their debut was 9 years ago...
I guess Ice Age fit the sound somewhat too, but again their debut was a decade ago.

Viagra Boys are a lot of fun live, but both live and on record i'm still just wishing it was some new Pissed Jeans

one local band I always thought was brilliant and never got its due was Brute Heart, but they were more i guess post punk in the slits/young marble giants way...but also very original they had their own sound, loved this band so much

was just going through a bunch of old records, Mother of Fire was great too
