That's deeply unfair to 'results 1 of 1,000 for gaydiohead' imo.

i remember when "ether" came out and people were going nuts over it and i kept finding myself saying things like, "you guys do know that he's supposed to be responding to 'takeover', right? one of the most vicious and effective diss records of all time? you guys know that one, right?"

because anybody who did also knows that "ether" was weak across the board.

takeover was actually a good song clever Doors flip, listenable outside of the context of beef

to some really obnoxious adidas-sniffing purist it is.

so basically the best kind of controversy.

If I randomly played either "Tonight's the Night, Pt. 1" or "Tonight's the Night, Pt. 2," I defy anybody to tell the difference.

The 'shock g discovered tupac' references in the last couple of weeks reminded me how much I despise tupac and think there's absolutely nothing of any value in his entire oeuvre other than 'California Love' (which I love for some reason).

joygoat, Monday, 10 May 2021 12:49 (two years ago) link

I don’t like Tupac. I can’t say “despise” but none of his music does anything for me.

Hes overrated for sure. But two of his greatest songs, definition of a thug, and pour a little liquor, I'll take over pretty much everything else.

"metal" is fucking garbage and the people who play it deserve to be laughed at maliciously and relentlessly.

I used to feel that way too.

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 16:03 (two years ago) link

I've never really had any interest in metal either tbh, I don't hate it or anything though.

rockism in reverse

Assuming "rockism" has something to do with classic-era rock critic orthodoxy, few things are more rockist than hating metal. It's not a reversal of anything.

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 16:33 (two years ago) link

Do metal fans ever feel that there is too much metal, too many bands? It seems to an outsider like me that the genre is over-saturated even in 21st century terms (cheaper recording, digital distribution etc.).

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 16:49 (two years ago) link

certain genres of metal, absolutely yes

imago, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 16:56 (two years ago) link

my fellow metalheads will disagree with me on what genres these are though

imago, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 16:56 (two years ago) link

i appreciate austin's controversial opinion. i mean, they knew that was going to be controversial, and just went for it.

I almost feel this way about every genre. I've given up even trying to keep up.

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:06 (two years ago) link

there are too many bands and musicians in general! i really do believe that. it's not anyone's fault. there are just too many

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:07 (two years ago) link

is that controversial? haha, hold on

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:08 (two years ago) link

Yeah, this is hardly specific to metal.

jmm, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:27 (two years ago) link

i mean, i am joking. you guys know that, right?

i don't want to hear metal, but i really don't have anything against it. drummers can play, that's for sure!

just posted in here because i was driving yesterday listening to james brown (semi-loud with windows down) and after pulling up next to me, this guy kept driving right alongside me at the same speed blasting some stupid metal. like yeah, okay you don't like james brown or you think your music is better or whatever. leave me out of it.

also you're a wonderful person, neanderthal. don't change. unless that was you trying to have a mobile sound system battle. don't do that.

making splashes at Dan Flashes (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:03 (two years ago) link

i used to live for windows-down stereo battles where i would blast whitehouse ('wrggle like a fucking eel', what's cooler than that????)

now that i'm old i will roll up my windows if there is even a chance of passive-aggressive interaction with another vehicle.

Here's a controversial music opinion: labeling any genre as "fucking garbage" is as prejudiced as saying any cultural or ethnic group is "fucking garbage". There's garbage in every genre, yet none of them deserve that label.

Feel like I get that vibe from pop fans that declare superiority over "lol indie".

However I have no examples just vague memories of comments here on ilx over the years.

Actually, what did that even mean? Maybe I just guessed.

While it might be correct on some level to call it prejudiced, I would defend use of hyperbole to vent strong opinions on a music forum without fear of it being compared to ethnic slurs. I would even go further and defend dismissing certain cultures as "fucking garbage" without that being compared to doing the same for an ethnic group. Difference in my mind being that a culture is something a person chooses to be a part of.

xposts Although he was the musical inspiration for that time my brother came to town and we spent the whole weekend inventing songs for my imaginary Newman Sings Newman album (where every tune is from the perspective of Jerry Seinfeld's nemesis). Pretty sure we nearly made a friend of mine pee his pants. Good times.

Otherwise: musical garbage machine.

Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:40 (two years ago) link

Except there's a strong history of those genres that are commonly targeted and specifically dismissed wholesale as being ones started by and intended for historically marginalized groups - disco, rap, jazz being three prime contenders. It's pretty hard to extract that history when someone dismisses the entirety of a genre as "fucking garbage".
