jesus. feel free to ILXmail me, I'm in Oregon

I deeply regret not buying a DJ's lifetime collection of country 45s maybe a decade back

I like signing up to dead sites (sleeve), Tuesday, 9 March 2021 16:38 (three years ago) link

Anyone who wants a list can email me at ShedRekkids at gee male. Mention you’re from ILX & I’ll figure out some kind of friends-&-family pricing thing :)

It’s daunting but I’m super stoked about it. Clawing back a five-figure investment $5 at a time is gonna be a long slog.

Sleeve, I hear you. I didn’t want to have the same regret, so I took a leap on this one.

A couple decades back a friend & I bought the contents of a bookstore that had gone out of business. Without a storefront of some kind, we floundered like hell.

I think I’m better positioned now, with the internet, a small local customer base, and a line on a stall in a local antiques market — not to mention books were on their way out & vinyl is a hot market. I’m gonna come out on top of this one but it’s gonna need some elbow grease.

it took me... five years maybe? but I came out way ahead on a storage unit full of 10K hip hop records, I'd do it again now but there was a while back then where I def felt like I had bitten off more than I could chew

FWIW, I listed a collection of around 4000 7-inch singles in the space of 12 months, working more or less full time. It was slowed down by a) having to add around 1500 of them to the Discogs database (there were a lot of very obscure promos), b) cleaning them and c) recording audio clips for all of them.

I wish you could somehow filter out compilations when you search all the items for sale for a particular artist

you could try excluding terms, eg adding "-various" to your search

stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Tuesday, 9 March 2021 18:10 (three years ago) link

I still smart (and this is a reminder)at not making an offer on only around 100 or so but a *very* selection of 45s almost none of which I recognised or had a reference point for. Eastern European pop and rock I guess, and also commercial promo items (for non musical products) that all seemed to have been collected for their oddness one way or another. I bought a couple but totally should have tried for the lot.

Noel Emits, Tuesday, 9 March 2021 18:12 (three years ago) link

*very* quirky, I guess.

Noel Emits, Tuesday, 9 March 2021 18:13 (three years ago) link

First batch picked up. Mostly the stuff with picture sleeves.

Lots and lots and lots of 80s pop.
A little bit of everything from Mario Lanza to Macy Gray.
Mostly super common stuff (tho in uncommonly nice condition). Just absolutely beautiful store stock, but I don’t think there’s gonna be a Love Buzz in there.

"The Pus/Worm" by The Smiths (hardcore dilettante), Wednesday, 10 March 2021 04:43 (three years ago) link

Mario Lanza

That reminds me of my favorite overheard record store owner humor:

Customer: [Discussing how the Bohemian Rhapsody movie pushed up the price of Queen records.]
Owner: When the Mantovani movie comes out, I'm going to make a killing.

This is an eBay transaction (but I figure same principle applies): I bought a CD whose condition was listed as "Very Good” (“An item that is used but still in very good condition. [...] no scuffs, scratches, cracks, or holes."). The seller also wrote “Used, but not abused.”

It turned out to be the most scratched-up CD I’ve ever seen; the surface looks like it’s been dragged on pavement. It should have been graded "Acceptable" at best ("obvious and significant wear").

I sent a pic with a polite request for refund. The seller refunded the base price, but kept the tax(?) and the shipping cost.

I wrote back, saying thanks but explaining that I wouldn't have purchased it if it had been listed accurately, and I don't even want to chance putting it in my car CD player (in case it gets stuck due to the damage). Asked for refund of the additional amount; and added: “If you want to also send me a return label, I'll mail it back to you.”

Am I out of line? Should I have to pay shipping on a junk CD? Thx

How much money did you pay?

bruce spr!ngisH3r3 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 March 2021 03:13 (three years ago) link

Not a huge amount, and the outstanding $$ is just a standard shipping charge – just wondering if I’m being unreasonable to expect a full refund.

beer drops on my keytar (morrisp), Sunday, 21 March 2021 03:17 (three years ago) link

Fuck no, it's a bait and switch to grade a heavily damaged CD as "very good." Most sellers refund the shipping fee - any that don't should expect a negative review or even a claim to be filed. I don't think he kept the tax - he probably kept the PayPal fees since PayPal no longer refunds those, but it's still on him to refund it if he blatantly graded the CD incorrectly.

If he refuses, you can open a dispute with PayPal.

birdistheword, Sunday, 21 March 2021 03:44 (three years ago) link

I mean you’re obviously In the right, but like the $7 or whatever shipping and tax is not worth bickering with an internet rando over

bruce spr!ngisH3r3 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 21 March 2021 04:16 (three years ago) link

Yeah, if it's anything less than $10 and the seller gives a passable apology, I'll let it slide. If the seller is a complete asshole, like a couple I've dealt with, I will pursue every avenue possible and, once I win, still leave a scorching feedback.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 March 2021 04:21 (three years ago) link

Thanks, all. The seller hasn’t actually said anything (yet)...

Appreciate the feedback; this is my big Saturday night action, lol.

beer drops on my keytar (morrisp), Sunday, 21 March 2021 04:33 (three years ago) link

Let us know how you get on. On ebay you'd have no problem getting a full refund. I'm wondering how this will go on discogs.

maf you one two (maffew12), Sunday, 21 March 2021 12:07 (three years ago) link

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to contact eBay for help (I tried following the instructions on this page, but the indicated links do not appear in my Purchase History, no matter how hard I look).

I looked up the case in the PayPal Resolution Center, and it says - "Since this is money you’ve received, you'll need to contact the sender directly to resolve your issue." The seller never responded to my 2nd message, btw.

I figured, "F it, I'll just leave negative feedback" - but eBay only gives you room for 80 characters! What am I supposed to write in that tiny amount of space, to indicate the nature of the problem? It will have to be super abbreviated, and the seller will probably contest whatever I write (maybe they'll be even given more room to do so).

I went with the below, and will live with my 100% positive feedback taking a ding when this joker inevitably leaves me negative fb in return:

"Very good" CD covered in scratches. Only received partial refund. Bait & switch

beer drops on my keytar (morrisp), Friday, 26 March 2021 00:07 (three years ago) link

You're safe. Seller's can't leave negative feedback.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 26 March 2021 01:06 (three years ago) link

*Sellers

Johnny Fever, Friday, 26 March 2021 01:06 (three years ago) link

They can, can't they? There's supposed to be separate buyer's and seller's feedback. More appropriately they will probably respond to that negative feedback (posting a comment tied to it).

birdistheword, Friday, 26 March 2021 14:42 (three years ago) link

sellers can absolutely leave negative feedback

I like signing up to dead sites (sleeve), Friday, 26 March 2021 15:29 (three years ago) link

I made the same mistake above. I can see how this is thorny now because eBay tries to automate as much as they can, and you got partial money back through just sending messages, right? You could hit the button for returning the item and that should put the onus on the seller to explain to eBay why he wouldn't be refunding the full amount now. I don't think you are supposed to be on the hook for shipping costs when the thing just isn't as described.

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 26 March 2021 16:29 (three years ago) link

Unless the policy's changed recently, sellers can leave feedback on ebay. Most of my feedback is from purchases, not selling.

birdistheword, Friday, 26 March 2021 18:43 (three years ago) link

That is, most feedback I've RECEIVED has been from me purchasing stuff.

birdistheword, Friday, 26 March 2021 18:44 (three years ago) link

xxp Yeah - in retrospect, the better route may have been to initiate a return (if I had been up for the logistics). Poking around in PayPal, I found they have a "Return Shipping on Us" option you can activate if "you aren't happy with your order."

Anyway, I'm satisfied now, lol. I was more irked about the misrepresentation and lack of communication than I was hungry to make a trip to the PO.

My recent ebay version of this was ordering The Godfather blu-rays and getting sent the DVDs. No massive deal but the mistake was clearly theirs and they wanted me to send it back and pay the postage. They've since sent me another set of the DVDs, unbidden.

one cool thing about discogs is sometimes people will package dollar records on either side, apparently just trying to get rid of excess stock. sometimes you get kinda fun stuff in there. some of it I wouldn't dare to stick on the turntable though, not cuz it sucks but because it looks like someone used it for sandpaper practice

frogbs, Friday, 26 March 2021 20:10 (three years ago) link

Unless the policy's changed recently, sellers can leave feedback on ebay.

Positive only. Neutral or negative feedback against a buyer isn't allowed.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 27 March 2021 01:36 (three years ago) link

Of course, you can flag the buyer for non-payment or whatever, at which point ebay themselves could conceivably kick the buyer off the platform, but direct seller-to-buyer reprimand isn't allowed.

yeah ebay instituted that some time ago, and it's really bullshit

akm, Monday, 5 April 2021 14:50 (three years ago) link

Even as a more frequent buyer than seller, I agree it’s... unexpected. What’s the rationale – to eliminate petty/retaliatory feedback? I guess if seller never pays, leaving negative feedback doesn’t stop them from bidding & winning on other auctions anyway...

come along you starbucks lovers (taylor’s version) (morrisp), Monday, 5 April 2021 15:03 (three years ago) link

I sell more than buy there, though both are pretty infrequent. In practice i think this is kinda moot. There are loads of one-time/first time buyer sales on ebay and iirc there's nothing you can do to limit selling to only good-reputation buyers. They aim to be the biggest and easiest used (and increasingly new) marketplace.

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 5 April 2021 15:44 (three years ago) link
