I'd missed this when it was a cassette last year, and missed the LP version last month but I'll be on it when it's re-pressed!

some of this is probably too garage-y/sheer mag-y for the real punks, but i'm loving the new album "tears of joy" by chicago's own the sueves: https://thesueves666.bandcamp.com/

have ticket to see Chubby & The Gang in December. imagine that, going to see a band live. I mean hopefully that won't be the first time I see that happen.

they're only touring uk, right?

in theory my first live experience since March 2020 is gonna be a garage rock all-dayer in July but it's literally the day after my 2nd vaccine so that might not happen. some good bands tho and it's free. Dirty Contacts/Baron Four/Oh! Gunquit. might be outside the remit of this thread

Totally checks out that ILM is dead silent about the new Turnstile record.

I like them. Saw them the year Time & Space came out and it was a blast.
― gman59, Thursday, 12 August 2021 19:05 (two years ago) link
Same, they're very fun live. All these new preview tracks are dope and unexpectedly accessible for pop crossover.
This is definitely the first time I've heard any hardcore attempting Wincing The Night Away / Target-commercial millennial whoops. And it's actually somehow good.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ny1fjdLKew

re: new Turnstile
There isn't a rolling punk 2021 that I can find so I'll post this here.
The Bronx never much impressed me and their Mariachi El Bronx stuff made me roll my eyes. However the new album that came out today has a spark to it that hits the spot nicely. It's catchy without being pop-punk a la some of my favorite albums by Supersuckers and Speedealer.

the new turnstile record is fucking great
really want someone to turn the piano intro at the start of "fly again" into a drill instrumental

Saw the Bronx open for Dropkick (yuk) and Rancid at an outdoor show last night. They were...really good? In fact, they were great! Really surprising tbh. Rancid were shambolic and excellent per usual, hadn't seen them in more than two decades. Had a nice time despite the swarms of Dropkick fans.

idg turnstile. sounds like incubus
― flopson, Thursday, 2 September 2021 04:31 (two years ago) link
i know “hardcore” and “hardcore punk” are 2 diff genres (also chubby and the gang are the latter and totally fair game itt) and the former is more of an outgrowth of emo/metal but i was surprised to read on pitchfork that the most innovative thing a hardcore band can do in 2021 is sound like radio alt rock
― flopson, Thursday, 2 September 2021 04:33 (two years ago) link
They've definitely moved more rock as time goes on but I'm kinda here for it. If Incubus grew up raised by Snapcase.
― husked, tonal wails (irrational), Thursday, 2 September 2021 14:23 (two years ago) link
The surprise veering into non-hardcore directions is consistent with the first two albums. This new one definitely jumps around more frequently and heads down more adventurous avenues, but it would sound gimmicky to me if the record wasn't just as solid as the earlier ones. The jams are still dope.

haven't really caught up with stuff coming out this year, but I am going to my first hardcore gig for the first time in 18 months:
Damage Is Done II, London New Cross Inn Saturday 20/11/2021:
T.S.WarspiteFlaccidStringrayInstructorPest ControlRated XThe AnnihilatedNekraGameThe FlexWildside
Thinking that's probably not the same Flaccid that put out a cool 7" in 2014 just cos it's been 7 years. Heard good things about Stingray. I have records by Game and the Flex and they are both excellent bands. Heard demos by Nekra & the Annihilated and they both sound good. Thought Wildside & Rated X were just OK though. Don't know the other bands.
