Good piece from 2010 on this anti-liberalism tendency stretching back into the late 80s.

I do think this is the relatively early stages of a newer incarnation though. Other than an organic crank core previous incarnations haven't had that much success within the wider 'left'. Spiked has outsized presence in the UK due to outside funding, and credulous amplification by the likes of the BBC rather than any genuine presence.

But this seems to me the earlyish stages of something more likely to gain a wider foothold, (previously?) respected figures on board. Populism for populisms sake, where populism is shouting and not understanding things.

sorry to bump this thread before greenwald dies, i did not particularly want to end up reading one of his newsletters and then gazing at the conspiracy theorists in the comments section in horror but that's what happened this morning. him and taibbi and their apparent best bros jesse singal and andrew sullivan are like this susbtack thinktank now and are consistently rewarded and prioritized by their platform and i would feel a pleasant degree of schadenfreude at all of them collectively showing their asses especially about anything remotely touching trans issues if it weren't accompanied by a profound sense of dread and rage that they've made money and courted an audience over it. just had to get that out

I find that when I click on a weird Twitter response to a political post to look at the person's feed (why do I do this? Some kind of mild self-harm instinct I guess) I surprisingly often find it's an anti-religion, anti-"critical race theory", anti-woke, Greenwald-loving account. This is a constellation of views I don't think I really understand, but it's out there.
