i've missed this thread... so many good recs in the years since i last posted. been particularly enjoying the gr8080 playlists and of course the test pressing stay home and chill ones too <3

this is mentioned in the tp 2020 round up but super vibing on everything i've heard from pellegrino & zodyaco:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3Hu0LwxgVg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHmyXJs9yFw

the label that put that out, early sounds, was also involved in the napoli segreta comps - those are also amazing and may or may not have already been mentioned itt but definitely worth checking out

a friend recently tipped me off to this older gem, you all might enjoy it too:

Thanks for the recs

This was linked a few weeks back in her own thread but posting it here as Charlotte Adigery's playlist on Spotify of the stuff she plays on her Studio Brussel show is an absolute treasure trove of Balearic classics, techno bangers, ambient, dub, disco, reggae, hip-hop, post-punk, pop, soul, jazz and just about everything in-between

Great new mix from Lexx via Danny Mclewin

Next up in our Idle Cellars mix series we are delighted to have the legendary Lexx deliver an exquisite selection of soft rock, soul jazz and smoky folk gems that truly only he can, with such effortless ease. Known for some of the most exquisite mixes for Test Pressing he’s delivered us a mix very much in the vein of those seminal Renaissance journeys. It is safe to say I am head over heels in love with this immaculate selection. Tune in and bliss out to this perfect Idle soundtrack

Sounds great! Thanks for the heads up.

Darn these international shipping rates. Oh well

Evan, Thursday, 20 May 2021 15:44 (two years ago) link

I got really really bored during a Teams call and ordered it without listening. Ummm listening now and it's... okay? Maybe a little too tidy and polite - like mid-period Nightmares On Wax or something. It's worth a listen though

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2021 15:52 (two years ago) link

Yeah, definitely a stoned 90s downtempo breaks vibe in the Grand Central Records style, not in a bad way

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2021 15:53 (two years ago) link

I didn't give it a formal listen (sampled some and then left it going from midpoint to the end) at low volume through laptop speakers, but what I heard of the 2nd half has been nice. Yes perhaps a bit sterile.

Evan, Thursday, 20 May 2021 15:56 (two years ago) link

It'll be good concentration music for when I'm working, whatevs. Not sure if there will be a standout track I'd put into a set.

Speaking of which, I've been invited to play a very short vinyl set to a sit-down crowd next week. I think it'll mostly be youngsters waiting for someone to play a bunch of acid and jungle. But figured I'd play a nice Balearic set seeing as my collection has been building up over lockdown. Not sure how it'll go down, but fuck em

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2021 16:13 (two years ago) link

youngsters are into acid and jungle? I'm really out of the loop

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Thursday, 20 May 2021 16:17 (two years ago) link

Drum n Bass seems to be having a resurgence amongst the youth but yeah, jungle never went away in Bristol. People never seem to tire of it

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Thursday, 20 May 2021 17:35 (two years ago) link

I'm clearly living in the wrong part of the world, I'm not sure if jungle or DnB ever even existed in Texas

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Thursday, 20 May 2021 17:40 (two years ago) link

Yeah, I always wonder whether there's some club around Boston that plays like jungle or balearic stuff, or really any cool club music. Haven't heard of one yet. Outside of like New York, I wonder how rare this sort of thing really is in the US.

OneSecondBefore, Friday, 21 May 2021 03:00 (two years ago) link

RIP Axis

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Friday, 21 May 2021 03:05 (two years ago) link

Yeah, they closed before I moved here. Bums me out, that would have been right up my alley!

OneSecondBefore, Friday, 21 May 2021 12:53 (two years ago) link

I know they've probably been shut down by the pandemic but does The Phoenix Landing still have DJs? That was another that I went to a lot.

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Friday, 21 May 2021 13:19 (two years ago) link

I've actually never been, but their website still talks about local DJs, so hopefully they'll be able to resume those kinds of events soon. Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out!

OneSecondBefore, Friday, 21 May 2021 14:42 (two years ago) link

it's been over 20 years since I was last there, but back in the 90s they brought in a surprisingly solid string of DJs

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Friday, 21 May 2021 15:31 (two years ago) link

i came to this comp for the version of "food of love" and it turns out the whole thing is pretty excellent

Sadly my vinyl copy is delayed till November but the new Reuben Vaun Smith is sounding FANTASTIC. Last year's Warm Nights album got me through the pandemic, and this sounds like a much lusher and deeper excursion overall with added instruments and vocals but without losing the original charm

Here's my latest playlist of mellow Balearic-friendly atmospheres for background chilling, vibing etc - this one concentrates on a slightly hippyish, boho vibe with lots of acoustic guitar flourishes before moving into other dimensions. Enjoy. And if you want to hear any of the others, search "Club Stoic" in playlists on Spotify.

If anyone wants to get me that Ritmo Fantasia comp upthread they'd be very welcome. Somehow I appear to have already spend an obscene amount of money on music in recent weeks

Sort of a late night city balearic vibe here, super into it:

Have never known an artist to effortlessly move between “really excellent” and “totally fucking worthless” the way Mark Barrott does.

^^ I was going to post the above but then I tried to go find the track that I hated so much, so I played one of his cheesy-looking Ibiza albums at random and it’s so good, Steve Roach level.

brisk money (lukas), Sunday, 15 May 2022 02:22 (one year ago) link

Mark Barrott has co-compiled a fourth La Torre Ibiza compilation. Out in July. Loved the first three comps.

i should be sporting about the price tag for the digital album, but i can't.
is this some ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs) thingie?

meisenfek, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 15:36 (one year ago) link

didn't read the fine print. my bad.

meisenfek, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 15:37 (one year ago) link

yeah I noticed that! Must be some Bandcamp setting preventing them from making the digital copies completely unavailable without disabling the streaming, or something similar

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Wednesday, 13 July 2022 15:39 (one year ago) link

So we have no way to hear it unless we purchased the now sold out vinyl?

It is streaming somewhere then I guess?

Evan, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 15:41 (one year ago) link

there's also a new Hostel La Torre compilation out
