Does this count?

https://kessleruk.bandcamp.com/album/ambivalent-ep

Just a chill d’n’b/breakbeat record that sports the right amount of haunting melodies. Love it.

Jordan, do you know my pal W1lli3 who is from Madison, moving back there in the next month or two from Oakland?

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 2 March 2021 17:03 (three years ago) link

(Also, going to peep the Chants record on Friday :-))

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 2 March 2021 17:03 (three years ago) link

I don't think so, but I'm always up for meeting new music people here! It's a very small community.

(and thanks <3)

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 March 2021 18:13 (three years ago) link

I'll try to put y'all in touch. It's sometimes hard to know what his headspace is like because...well, the last five years of his life have been marked by tragedy heaped on tragedy. Can't imagine what he's been through. But we used to make music together, and he's a sweetheart who is into the sort of stuff yr into! He's friends with Joel (Golden Donna), if that gives any context.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 2 March 2021 18:31 (three years ago) link

Ah, ok cool.

(should probably take this off ilx but this is a different person than Dav1d L@st, who also moved back here from Oakland for awhile for tragic reasons, and is friends with J03l, right?)

James Bangura is so prolific & good.

A couple new hmurd tracks messing around with meter & time sig, love the sound design:

I wonder how the Bandcamp ban has been affecting them, if they're using VPNs out getting someone outside China to administer it or what.

I would imagine it’s not a big deal. the label founder is an expat from the UK. if in-country sales are a thing, that’d probably be via different channels. is it just that the site is inaccessible, or does the government try to block money transfers?

mh, Friday, 5 March 2021 03:28 (three years ago) link

I think it's the former, no idea about the latter.

Soooo many Bandcamp emails today (as expected)!

Ok here we go:

Loris on Subreal
https://subreal.bandcamp.com/album/rastros
Full release isn't out yet, but sounds very DJ Plead (with more kick drum)

new Kirk Barley ambient EP
https://kirkbarley.bandcamp.com/album/lake-of-gold-primer

new Bored Lord EP (of course)
https://boredlord.bandcamp.com/album/lavirga
Breaks galore

MM - Massive Music
https://eventhestrong.bandcamp.com/album/massive-music
This one is really fun, drums for days. Billed as DDM = dumb dance music, lol.

object blue - Grotto (TT)
https://tobagotracks.bandcamp.com/album/grotto
Still digesting this but it's cool, love the last vocal cut-up track. She did an NTS show only playing stems from it and talking about them, that was unique.

Dave Quam
https://davequam.bandcamp.com/album/groundscore-b-w-pink-line-beat
Fun two tracker, I'm getting Dance Mania vibes (which have been hitting the spot for me, going through old mixtapes on youtube lately)

Checking this Indonesian label out based on a Ch@l Ravens rec, there are some pretty crazy records on their bandcamp:
https://yesnowave.bandcamp.com/album/alkisah-dikisahkan
(also Slikback and Gabber Modus Operandi on that comp)

Enjoying the new Mr. Mitch album:
https://mrmitch.bandcamp.com/album/lazy

The new ZULI EP got released a day early, and it's certainly not as weird as his previous material, definitely more indebted to jungle and d'n'b, but it's really hitting the damn spot.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Thursday, 11 March 2021 19:35 (three years ago) link

Can't wait to check that.

Also out today, shiny dancehall/flex EP on Nervous Horizon:
https://nervoushorizon.bandcamp.com/album/sim-terminate-ep

This one is a curiosity, Jaf Ge Nos - Un Discorsetto EP:
https://nostrohoodsystem.bandcamp.com/album/un-discorsetto-ep
Long tracks that are almost like medleys or overtures, sort of reminds me of the weirder material on HudMo's Butter. Technicolor and silly, going in and out of beats and jazzy free-time interludes, sounds like it was made by a keyboardist.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 12 March 2021 18:38 (three years ago) link

That Jaf Ne Gos is excellent, thank you Jordan.

NKC collaboration with Nabalayo, a Kenyan singer/producer:

Sunareht's LP is out today, I think it's a stunner (adds to his whole weightless house chords thing without losing what makes it special):

And I'm super into the rhythms & sound design on this Tristan Arp EP:

more twitchy cut-up filterhouse from sunareht, if you like his style you'll like this, a bit more anthemic and less methodical than previous efforts. also a bit much over the course of an entire LP, i'll admit, but some incredible moments

Some gripping theory there, guess I should start paying attention to Ben UFO again. Tbh I had tuned him and his crew out because they were becoming such a dominant force in the scene that I didn't want my tastes to be majorly shaped by this small clique.

(Apologies if we've already cancelled mentions of 'the scene' here. Also thanks to Jordan for posting those Call Super links for me -- I tried searching for them when I posted but either they weren't up yet or I overlooked them.)

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 8 November 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

And yeah instead of Hessle Audio I allow my tastes to be shaped by Livity Sound and Lobster Theremin these days.

If you want to hear some crazy metric modulation-based mixed (aka 'triplet mixes'), this mix is a flex:

https://soundcloud.com/peopleofvalley/michaelbrailey-for-valley

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 8 November 2021 18:21 (two years ago) link

Yesss that’s the sauce. It’s very compelling in a not especially dancefloor-friendly way. Some of it is quite catchy. It’s sort of filling the same niche as math rock. Or Linkin Park? Could do without more of that.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 8 November 2021 20:07 (two years ago) link

Quite of few of his own edits on the track list. Some aya too.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 8 November 2021 20:10 (two years ago) link

Ha yes, I love it in a math rock/minimalist drummer brain way, but is essentially just showing off for other DJs/musicians, I'm sure no one on a dancefloor really cares about the elegance of your shift into a new tempo.

Now I'm going back to my fave MICHAELBRAILEY edits of yore:

viborg, you might be interested in the Donato Dozzy record that came out end of last year, as it is at 170 BPM but due to the polyrhythms and such, it truly does not sound like it excepting one track: https://donaotodozzysm.bandcamp.com/album/the-tao

I really like it.

I'm a sovereign jizz citizen (the table is the table), Monday, 8 November 2021 21:08 (two years ago) link

I did the old ‘change the tempo using triplets’ trick on an EP for Cut La Roc about 10 years ago but going from 140bpm breakstep to 93.3bpm hip hop and back. Probably not the best idea to keep people on a dancefloor in retrospect 😂.
