if at some stage in this year everyone who wants a vaccine where i live has had one - which it appears likely will happen - i will be happy to go to shows

ya this is otm. i wonder what the rationale of the ‘don’t leave the house until 2022-2023’ers is

flopson, Friday, 26 February 2021 06:17 (three years ago) link

my fear is that the first concerts/clubs/etc will be an alcohol-fuelled nightmare - people who've not been out and haven't had a proper drink and dance in over a year, going wild. It will be like the Friday before Xmas when everyone has their work night out and the streets look like carnage by midnight.

I've been asked to do a DJ set in July. I really want to do it, but I think it's way too early for me, and now I feel incredibly sad. I want to! But I shouldn't.

I think this is a combination of a few things - an overabundance of caution (which is, imo, totally justified), a doubt that the vaccine process is going as quickly as it needs to (though, as pointed out, getting better every week in the US!), just fatigue and fear of getting ones' hopes up and, of course, it doesn't help that a lot of messaging from experts seems to still be pushing for caution and how long the road ahead of us is before things really move back towards normal.

one month passes...

seeing tour announcements today and started getting emails from venues that they're opening for shows around Sept/Oct, this is in the US btw

Bongo Jongus, Friday, 30 April 2021 19:46 (two years ago) link

Yeah, I've seen a lot of emails announcing shows for the Fall. Curious to see how this all plays out, particularly wrt ticket sales. Like, do they sell tickets based on what occupancy limits are now? What they hope they will be by the time of the shows?

I'd consider attending smaller shows that are outdoors on a lawn now. Not festivals or crowded stadiums.

first officially sanctioned uk rave happening right now in liverpool.
no masks, no social distancing.
feels weird seeing massive crowds having it.
i genuinely hope that there are no outbreaks of the lurgy, and things go to plan.

mark e, Friday, 30 April 2021 19:58 (two years ago) link

same here.

the only odd thing about the liverpool rave was that they flew in a DJ from Germany. i can't really understand why they did that unless it was part of the 'experiment'.

anyhow, i am pretty optimistic. i think we really are on the road back to some kind of normality here. i truly hope i don't have to eat my words on this.

stirmonster, Friday, 30 April 2021 20:43 (two years ago) link

the only thing that's a bit eye opening.
the demographic re such events have yet to get anywhere near a vax jab.
hence, it's a bit of an unknown quantity.
but hopefully the 50% plus uk vax groove means that young'uns can get back to having their lives back.

mark e, Friday, 30 April 2021 20:49 (two years ago) link

so apparently that rave is being done as a kind of experiment re: gatherings?

I saw a report on the news last night about a few “experimental” outdoor concerts in Europe where they ran follow-up tests afterward, and the shows didn’t seem to result in widespread infection (I don’t remember enough details to look it up). I think all the attendees had agreed to get a rapid test coming in, too; which is obviously not reproducible on a wide scale.

(possible xpost, that may be the same thing)

I played an indoor jazz gig in a large space last night, very distanced, no masks necessary at tables, required when people got up/moved around.

The big difference from playing the same gig back in February was that almost no one watched or donated on the livestream, whereas we made like $1100 only 2.5 long months ago.

The weather makes a huge difference since it was -30 then, but it also felt pretty clear that people are edging back toward doing things in person and even if they're not quite ready, they're definitely over watching livestreams.

i'd quite like to have mine back too.

the European Song Contest (which was cancelled last year) will go ahead in less than three weeks’ time in Rotterdam with a limited audience - as one of the experiments I think morrisp was referring to (in the Dutch case for both indoor and outdoor events):

I work with a gal who’s seen Dave Matthews play over 30 times; she just bought tix to see him both nights when he comes through town. Music’s back, baby!

Washington DC is the home of "Do The Standing Still." When a band I want to see is at the venues I want to attend, I will be there, BAY-BEE.

I see endless local gigs advertised for the coming weeks, overwhelmingly domestic acts plus almost-domestic-acts-from-places-with-no-COVID like (as ufo mentioned upthread) The Beths. More puzzling are seemingly legit listings for the likes of The Hold Steady in a few weeks. Would have guessed restricted flights and onerous quarantine requirements would still preclude US visitors.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 1 May 2021 03:33 (two years ago) link

Do you mean actual advertisements, or things that might be artifacts of CMS entries from 18 months ago?

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Saturday, 1 May 2021 04:08 (two years ago) link

Looks like the Hold Steady do have three Australia dates scheduled for end of May, if that’s what we’re talking about.

smoking grass, poor caddying. (morrisp), Saturday, 1 May 2021 04:16 (two years ago) link

(Their last dates before that are May 5–7 in Toronto; which presumably allows for a quarantine window?)

smoking grass, poor caddying. (morrisp), Saturday, 1 May 2021 04:17 (two years ago) link

Ticket sales. BUT it appears to be May 2022! I read 2021 elsewhere in the listings. Whoops.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 1 May 2021 04:18 (two years ago) link

Oh yeah, my bad. haha

(It’s confusing because they actually do have a few 2021 dates scheduled, then it jumps a year)

I just think there are so many variables at this point that it's really difficult to predict. As stated upthread, ask me again in Fall.

exactly; this not meant as an insult, but I cannot imagine how anyone can possibly have any opinion other than this

(I realize it was posted in February but there are still many variables)
