How do you feel about attending live music events in 2021?

I'm planning on traveling starting in July, so maybe a (masked) gig by the fall? At that point, everyone who wants the vaccine should have received it, the open question is that enough for herd immunity and the wild card will be mutations.

I was thrown the other day when I saw a King Gizzard tweet about merch at their upcoming shows, before I remembered they are in Australia where that is a thing again!

Gigs barely stopped for a couple of months in some states, that eg had 6 deaths by April and none since.

(908 have died in the country - 820 in one state, nearly all of those in aged care homes.)

im not going to voluntarily occupy indoor space with anyone outside my household bubble under any circumstances until we get our 2nd jabs, whether its this summer or fall or next year or w/e. but as soon as thats done i look forward to going back out to shows, with mask.

I find it so hard to think about stuff like this when it all just really depends on how successful we are at containing the virus through vaccinations and other measures. I can't make any predictions for what will happen in the next 10 months, so I will hope for the best and make decisions based on the situational reality.

I get a 2nd jab in 32 hours. Even if there were any gigs to go to, there's still the possibility of carrying and transmitting the virus, especially a mutation, especially an unknown mutation. I expect to be double-masking in the grocery store for months, probably masking in public all year, and not expecting music in public to even happen.

(Even though research is looking good that vaxed folk are vanishingly low-risk for spreading, to do anything against the normalising of masks is cuntacular.)

I haven't been inside anywhere that isn't my house since last September and don't see that changing any time soon, but do still think music outside in the summer could be a possibility.

English govt saying clubs could be open there by June 21st seems very far fetched currently.

personally i don't think festivals should happen this summer at all, but i am an overly cautious 53 yr old parent who see things differently to a young'un who is desperate to do stuff (which is totally understandable ... )

i don't know how much financial support the uk government are giving to venues and promoters (if any), but i'm guessing that once they're given legal clearance to proceed with business then any support is likely to be withdrawn so part of me really wants people to start going to gigs and festivals just to support them. and i'd definitely be happy to go and watch something in a half empty field, not sure i'm ready for an indoor venue though. maybe this will change once i've had the vax

Curious what needs to happen for people to go back to shows. Personally vaccinated? Vaccinated + x% of population vaccinated? Vaccinations and mandatory masks? Never again?

Community spread would have to be very low for months, and live venues open for enough time to be sure no transmission flare-ups (in addition to vaccines having been long since available to anyone who wants them).

i get my 2nd dose May 27th. 66% of population still to get 1st dose. I'm not a betting person but odds here must be very long.

There's no guarantee we'll reach that point soon (i.e., in time for summer concert season). There are too many variables.

Also, we've had a real rollercoaster here - optimism is good & warranted, but we can't relax until community transmission is v low for a long period of time.

I bought a ticket to the Wide Awake festival in Brockwell Park last year and it was moved to June '21. It's just been moved again to early September and I'm still not sure how I feel about that. I think I'd need to be sure of vaccination, as well as reassurances about capacity and possibly pinch points. I just don't know.

If I've been vaccinated myself by autumn, I might be willing to go to small events where I know there will be a sparse crowd and I'll be able to keep my mask on and stay far away from other people. Jazz clubs, in other words. But honestly, I'd be skittish even then.

I just think there are so many variables at this point that it's really difficult to predict. As stated upthread, ask me again in Fall.

I'm doubtful that the events that rescheduled for this year will actually happen as planned. I'm even more doubtful that I will go even if they do happen, which is a shame since I was able to score nosebleed tickets to the Los Angeles MCR show that was scheduled for October 2020.

Also paid for Chris Jericho's Rock'n'Wrestling Rager at Sea that is supposed to be in October 2021. That, almost certainly, will not happen as planned, since it's festival style seating. Wrestling fans will crowd you if given the chance, so it doesn't seem smart/feasible for me to participate in it, or for the cruise liner to allow/enable it, no matter how many people are vaccinated.

We'll try again in 2022, at the earliest. I'm a little too apprehensive about it all at the moment. I'm fortunate to live somewhere where we aren't having hundreds of positive cases every day, but it's still a little too many for my personal comfort.

As I mentioned in another thread, what will be interesting to see, is how the pent up demand for live events will impact the supply. I can easily imagine a period, particularly in large cities already pre-disposed to lots of live shows, where it is going to be really difficult to even score tickets to events you feel safe attending.

i'm not really worried about it because covid has been basically eliminated where i am. there's always the chance of a new outbreak meaning things might be cancelled, that's a bigger chance than actually catching covid from it but it's still pretty small.

I was walking with my kid earlier (both wearing masks), a guy was smoking across the street and I caught a whiff of the odor; now I'm freaking out about the % chances of infection via a virus-laden pot cloud, so clearly nowhere near the state of mind for a concert.

Live music has started again in a more restricted capacity here, and in desperation to see it, I’ve been to 2 shows I wouldn’t normally have gone to in the last week. Saw Ben Lee on Sunday and a then bunch of bands doing a gala for the re-opening of a theatre on Monday (including but not limited to Choirboys, Ian Moss, Tim Freedman).

Both were entirely seated, which, I don’t mind at all because I’m getting old, but it felt strange to be sitting amongst a huge group of people again. People seemed more hesitant to sing along than they normally would, but most people had a go at belting Run To Paradise, but who could resist with that one?

I was wondering if Ben Lee would skip playing his biggest hit (Catch My Disease) because of, you know, everything. But he played it without comment, and people clapped and sang along.

Anyway, it was really nice to see live music again. Definitely the thing I missed most over the last year. Seeing acts I’d never normally to go see, but enjoying them reminded me that a bit part of the joy of live music is simply experiencing music communally rather than just in your own headphones. Being around people who are enjoying themselves is good for the soul etc.

my fear is that the first concerts/clubs/etc will be an alcohol-fuelled nightmare - people who've not been out and haven't had a proper drink and dance in over a year, going wild. It will be like the Friday before Xmas when everyone has their work night out and the streets look like carnage by midnight.

I've been asked to do a DJ set in July. I really want to do it, but I think it's way too early for me, and now I feel incredibly sad. I want to! But I shouldn't.

I think this is a combination of a few things - an overabundance of caution (which is, imo, totally justified), a doubt that the vaccine process is going as quickly as it needs to (though, as pointed out, getting better every week in the US!), just fatigue and fear of getting ones' hopes up and, of course, it doesn't help that a lot of messaging from experts seems to still be pushing for caution and how long the road ahead of us is before things really move back towards normal.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of emails announcing shows for the Fall. Curious to see how this all plays out, particularly wrt ticket sales. Like, do they sell tickets based on what occupancy limits are now? What they hope they will be by the time of the shows?

I saw a report on the news last night about a few “experimental” outdoor concerts in Europe where they ran follow-up tests afterward, and the shows didn’t seem to result in widespread infection (I don’t remember enough details to look it up). I think all the attendees had agreed to get a rapid test coming in, too; which is obviously not reproducible on a wide scale.

I played an indoor jazz gig in a large space last night, very distanced, no masks necessary at tables, required when people got up/moved around.

The big difference from playing the same gig back in February was that almost no one watched or donated on the livestream, whereas we made like $1100 only 2.5 long months ago.

The weather makes a huge difference since it was -30 then, but it also felt pretty clear that people are edging back toward doing things in person and even if they're not quite ready, they're definitely over watching livestreams.

Washington DC is the home of "Do The Standing Still." When a band I want to see is at the venues I want to attend, I will be there, BAY-BEE.

I see endless local gigs advertised for the coming weeks, overwhelmingly domestic acts plus almost-domestic-acts-from-places-with-no-COVID like (as ufo mentioned upthread) The Beths. More puzzling are seemingly legit listings for the likes of The Hold Steady in a few weeks. Would have guessed restricted flights and onerous quarantine requirements would still preclude US visitors.

Looks like the Hold Steady do have three Australia dates scheduled for end of May, if that’s what we’re talking about.
