I love ATMP - except for the "jam" disc, it's always been an excellent album to me, and I don't even consider that third disc to be part of the album anymore. (When George promoted the reissue in 2000, he stated in a Billboard interview that "For the jams, I didn't want to just throw in the cupboard, and yet at the same time it wasn't part of the record; that's why I put it on a separate label to go in the package as a kind of bonus." There's at least one interview from 1970 where Harrison basically said the same, adding that he was annoyed that the list price was also raised accordingly because he was under the impression that Capitol would price it as a double LP per his request.)

"You" has been the only track I ever liked from Extra Texture, but if there's something else on there that I should revisit, I would definitely give it another listen.

Harrison otm about its "grotty" self-production. His singing is worse than on Dark Horse.

I did mention "Beware of Darkness". "Let It Roll" is a quirky song I can understand liking, "Let It Down" is woefully overblown.

Looks like the original album mixes aren't a part of this (aside from the 'bonus' jams that had been included with the original triple-LP set). It'll be interesting to hear a new mix, but despite Harrison's reservations about it, Spector's original LP mix may still be the mix for me.

Definitely—the murk is part of what makes the LP so atmospheric for me, though I can see why some might dislike it on the more rockin’ tracks.

I like the original, but maybe the new mix will be along the lines of the Abbey Road or white album remixes: there are infinitely more EQ options available in 2021 vs 1970, so clearing out some of the sonic clutter may lead to something interesting and hopefully revealing.

While I prefer John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band to ATMP, I'm not really interested in that box; I don't think I want or need multiple takes and false starts of "My Mummy's Dead." But hearing just George, Ringo, and Klaus run through the ATMP tunes, yeah, I definitely want to hear that.

(I would LOVE to hear the Yoko outtakes in the JL/POB box, but those are only on the Blu-Ray, and I don't have a Blu-Ray player.)

The Plastic Ono Band box set is an excellent listen. For anyone who loves the album and is really interested in hearing how it came together and studying the individual parts, it's perfect. It's basically the musical equivalent of wading through a truckload of extras on a great Criterion release. But that doesn't mean it's something you'd want to own for a lot of money. It's something I'd check out or rent from a library once in a blue moon. Studio session collections are typically like that though.

yeah, the only thing like that i've ever really listened to like an album in regular rotation (apart from when I JUST discovered a Smile bootleg) is actually the Beatles Anthology, and mostly just a couple key discs of that.

I finally got around to listening to the super deluxe set. I'm not a fan of the new mixes, especially when I was able to patch my computer into my stereo and hear it properly on good speakers. Even if you don't mind the historical revisionism (and I'm not always a stickler about "sticking with the original") the instrumental balance feels off - it just doesn't sound very good to me.

The fifth and last disc of session recordings is disposable. The opening "Isn't It Shitty" (to the tune of "Isn't It A Pity") is funny, but otherwise there's really nothing here I'd come back to.

That just leaves discs three and four covering the two days of demo sessions, and those are definitely a keeper. Not surprising - most of them have been bootlegged before and even with inferior sound, it was easily my favorite bootleg of George Harrison recordings. The two discs are more complete and presumably straight from the first-generation tapes (a major upgrade), but I kind of wish they left in all the in-between chatter. It's a matter of personal taste, but for something like this, I like hearing it all left in, and it sounds like most of the chatter has been edited out.

The previous deluxe edition (originally released in 2001) only had a handful of bonuses, and they're generally not included here for some reason. No big loss except for this bonus track which I really do miss:

It does appear in demo form, but the 2001 version is a real gem thanks to Pete Drake's pedal steel parts. I can't call it an outtake because it features only Harrison's lead vocal and Pete Drake's pedal steel from the original 1970 recording - all other instruments were actually overdubbed by Harrison and Dhani in 2000.

It's too bad the two discs of demos won't get its own standalone release. If you had those two discs and the 2014 remaster of All Things Must Pass (which includes the 2001 edition's new bonuses), you would have everything essential related to this album. That would've been a perfect four-disc set had they chosen to include the demos with the 2001 reissue.
