xp yeah that's definitely true with all the mangled MIDI harpsichord on that album. I was thinking more along the lines of a few measures of, like, Bach's St. John Passion slowed way down, looped and phased/reverbed to oblivion. So I suppose we're talking about baroque versions of the two schools of vapor (i.e. the Far Side Virtual school vs. the Eccojam school). Age Of is, ironically, an example of the former. I realize I sound ridiculous so I'll stop typing now lol

has The Caretaker had a go at mangling proper classical?

imago, Saturday, 20 February 2021 00:35 (three years ago) link

Not to my knowledge but Biosphere timidly attempts it on his latest, which is worth checking out if you’re a fan (not you, lj, since I know your feelings about ambient music).

Country and jazz have overlapped since pretty early on. Western swing, hillbilly boogie are both based in it as are music by Bill Frissel, Area Code 415, and a number of others including bits of Little Feat, Meat Puppets. Sonny Rollins.

Brian Blade's solo group had a pedal steel player, it was pretty cool! And yeah, Bill Frisell, duh.

Isis was kind of ambient nu-metal. As was Deftones, of course, stuff like ... "Minerva?" Years ago I read an interview with Eno where he compared the roar of metal guitars to ambient.
