There's arbitrary snobbery with regards to Baja Fresh simply because it's a chain. Their food is usually excellent (and often *much* healthier than many burrito places).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Wait, I like chain food almost as much as you, but Baja Fresh is not one of my favorites. I like their taquitos okay, I guess.

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Barney's is a chain! Bongo Burger is a chain! Cancun is a chain! Cactus is a chain!

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:23 (eighteen years ago) link

My favorite burrito thread is the hilarious one where andy calls out gringos who order burritos in spanish, that was a great thread.

i've learned how to slide into a vaguely mexican-american/southwestern accent when i need to sound less whitebread.

Here's a taste of BRITAIN for you all:

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:24 (eighteen years ago) link

no it's not cause it's a chain it's cause it's BLAND. plus they don't seem to able to get simple things like rice and beans right. other than cholula, the sauces they have there aren't very good.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Adam, those are mini-chains!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:25 (eighteen years ago) link

there's also chains like Chipotle and Qdoba, owned by McDonalds and the Jack in the Box guys, i think.

so! we could debate about how rockist one is about one's burritos, w.r.t. "authenticity," etc.

The Chipotle burrito/fajita things are great, and weight down the stomach a lot less than half-a-kilo of frijoles in a tortilla.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:25 (eighteen years ago) link

some of the yuppie burrito chains can be pretty good! rubio's! la salsa!

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Do you like sausage, oops?

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:26 (eighteen years ago) link

i've had up to 4 burritos a week at times. i like em coz they're fast to eat when i'm in a hurry -- probably faster, cheaper, and better all round than a burger.

i guess it does get sort of dull eventually.

burritos are just so damn efficient.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't like Chipotle because they're stingy with their salsa!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:27 (eighteen years ago) link

They give free soda to students (or people who used to work for a school and have kept their old ID!).

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, I love the chips at Baja Fresh, they're so thin and crisp and complement the salsa so well.

Wahoo's is another amazing mini-chain, but I'm not sure if they have any in the Yay Area.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:28 (eighteen years ago) link

who cares about authenticity?

if you mean chorizo, then yes. if you mean cock, then no not really.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Moe's is pretty good and it's a yuppie chain. It has like 6 different kinds of salsa, including the tomatilla one which is my favorite.

well, i wasn't referring to you, actually, but just as a follow-up to the snootiness mentioned upthread about burrito chains...

Apples & Oranges

Apples & Fried Apples

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:34 (eighteen years ago) link

it has nothing to do with burritos, I just find it funny.

xp I don't know, but that has to be one of the biggest mistakes you've ever made

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I couldn't give less of a shit about 'authentic' though I do tend to like the places with the crazy Mexican meat choices, like tongue and whatnot. Balazo is OK. The El Faro down the street from work isn't great but it'll do as a workday lunch place. Every taqueria has it's own best and worst items, and eventually you can learn what not order in one is precisely why you go to another. I'm jonesing for tamales right now.

Apples & Fried Apples Touché

As I've said before, I will even eat at Chevy's on a road trip if it means avoiding burger chains.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:36 (eighteen years ago) link

polish sausage is ok. brats (grilled directly then cooked in beer and onions) are better.

there may be some snootiness, but i don't think it's unfounded in this case. most every chain burrito/mex place i've been to has been shit. there have been many non-chain places that are also shit, but at least there's the chance to find one that isn't.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Taco Bell: Classic or Dud? (1 matching message)

baja fresh is over-rated.
started by some thousand oaks church lady.

and eff poquito mas while you're at it. safe/"fresh"/bland suburban mexican food = no fun.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I wonder if I could get a chicken, dumplings and fried okra burrito around here...

Rock Hardy, where in the Bell South are you? I could go for chicken and dumplings and fried okra about now, but not in burrito form.

I'm more into tortas these days anyway, since I saw a show about them on PBS and all the taquerias around me sell them.

Chipotle's tortillas alone have about half an average adult's alotment of fat and calories. FYI!

I am surprised I am the lone Tonayense loyalist! weird.

Rubio's makes great fish tacos.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 11 July 2005 20:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh I am confusing Rubio's and Baja Fresh.

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:40 (eighteen years ago) link

It could be worse.

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:41 (eighteen years ago) link

If I lived in Santa Cruz, I'd eat at Jalapenos every day - maximum burrito consumption.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Rubio's is a San Diego fish taco stand that franchised over the SW a few years ago.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:42 (eighteen years ago) link

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:44 (eighteen years ago) link

these things tend to vary from store to store, but the one near me is great.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I eat at Rubio's often because there's one across the street from my work. The fish taco's are good.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Not a burrito, and the version I had on Saturday was with lobster, but a fine, fine 'wrap':
