his "cotton eyed joe" is one of my most listened to tracks probably ever

What Color Is Love was my soundtrack to the fall and early winter for some reason. It's a very comforting sounding album, and that riff from Dancing Girl is some earworm shit that kind of took over my brain for months.

The story about him losing his job at a university when they found out he went on tour and was a musician: I've only seen passing reference to this, but isn't that incredibly fucked up?

Yeah, tracks like 'Dancing Girl' and 'Trick all your time away' are about as good as music gets and Terry Callier is a collossus.

two years pass...

so as near as i can tell, this was a digital only reissue and has been sitting on the internet jukebox since 2018. no listings on discogs/rym/wiki but a very much essential compilation for tc fans i'd reckon. really early faux motown non-album stuff, previously unissued recordings, and single edits. ephemera of the best. i know this sort of thing has been called a "copyright dump" in recent times, right?

whatever it is, i'm here for it.

check out the original recording of "you goin miss your candyman" from 1968—

What an intriguing thread all the way through! Hadn't seen it before, but re between Gil Scott-Heron and John Martyn, also "no brainer stays in the bag when DJing"---and hasn't he been sampled to good effect?---the only song I know is covered by Tom Jones: "Lazarus Man" ("I'm Lazarus, man...): elongated, atmospheric as hell, kinda like an Octavia E. Butler character, on Jones' stone cold killer Surrounded by Time (check the Hourglass Edition), fully realized with the assistance of Ethan Johns, son of Glyn, but hard to imagine it working with any other singer, and who else would be smart and self-aware and relatable to headz and others to pick these songs).
Will def check TC's original records, thanks for the comments.

I see you are already familiar with Willie Wright and made the Callier connection but all the same:
