After DECADES of legal battles, De La Soul has reportedly regained ownership of their masters. 🙌🏾 https://t.co/UuBbz9MayQ pic.twitter.com/Dd9o3NlQ32— Okayplayer (@okayplayer) August 9, 2021

Hopefully that'll bring down the prices of their albums - at least in the U.S. they're out-of-print and ridiculously expensive. (They seem more likely to be in-print and cheap in Europe, Australia and elsewhere outside of the U.S.)
― birdistheword, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 16:55 (two years ago) link
hopefully they'll finally earn some money from those albums

I wonder if these will show up on Spotify soon, or are there still sample issues?
― Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Tuesday, 10 August 2021 19:26 (two years ago) link
Samples, or label rights?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 19:54 (two years ago) link
Pretty sure there's a grandfather clause for samples, which is why Paul's Boutique still exists.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 10 August 2021 20:11 (two years ago) link
Not a grandfather clause - it comes down to whether or not the language of the original license covered future technology or changes in the way music is eventually distributed. It's crazy, you're basically anticipating things you can't envision so you have to draft language that's broad enough to cover it (but not so broad that the licensor will balk at the agreement).
The NY Times did a lengthy write-up on De La Soul's situation in 2016:

― birdistheword, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 20:20 (two years ago) link
the article says that label rights being sorted out at last means everything's coming to streaming & digital storefronts soon
― ufo, Tuesday, 10 August 2021 20:29 (two years ago) link
xpost BBs belatedly cleared Paul's samples, iirc

aaliyah and de la soul are certainly two of the more painful missing artists

Their legacies have definitely taken a hit by not being available on the source most people under 30 use to listen to music.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 11 August 2021 04:40 (two years ago) link
under 30s still love aaliyah ime
― ufo, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 04:42 (two years ago) link
also last I checked, more specifically youtube is that source, and I'm sure their stuff reappears and disappears there often. I didn't check if it's real, but there's a full album upload for Aaliyah with 5M views

Saw these live on a UK tour in... 2018.. I think. midweek night, missing one person from the lineup (didn't even bother to check who it was, I'm a big fan, lol). Really naff gig, bad soundsystem didn't help. 50% of said gig was a random hype man shouting crass party hype stuff, making the audience crouch down and jump up to song cues while the rest of the band just chilled on stage. Felt like the we got the midweek in the boonies/'these rednecks will dance to a leaking tap' show. I was even more annoyed to find for same price tickets in London, a few days later, the whole lineup played with a full backing band, including brass.

making the audience crouch down and jump up to song cuesis it possible that this was Dres from Black Sheep performing The Choice Is Yours?

Saw them at some festival, probably 15 years ago. I love their albums, but they sucked live. Maybe it was the setting, but they seemed bored and obviously did not want to be there.
― Cow_Art, Thursday, 12 August 2021 13:47 (two years ago) link
I saw them at the Rooftop at Pier 17 in NYC in July 2019, and they were AWESOME. They were definitely having fun, and surprisingly energetic given how much older they are now. Anyway, they were probably in the right mood - they were in their hometown, I vaguely recall allusions to their struggles with Tommy Boy (like the PiL song goes, "anger is an energy"), and all the bullshit happening in the country was heavy on their minds, with Pos kneeling and leading the group in prayer at one point, basically asking for the strength to navigate these times without succumbing to hate. Speaking as an agnostic, even I was pretty moved by that.

sorry for the anti-news revive, but i'm just now finding out that past de la affiliate shortie no mass released their debut album (!??!?) last year. if you like vintage nyc indie boom bap, it's decent. the first voice you hear on the album is phife dawg! happy sad!

The catalog is hitting streaming services on March 3. Kinda feel like it's a bit too little too late in terms of salvaging/cementing their legacy — I mean, will a bunch of middle-aged dads gassing on about their genius entice or repel potential teenage listeners?

i have a "radio station" playlist that i keep and i try not to mess with local/offline files. went out of my way to put "4 more" on it. i liked it at the time, but that's kind of become the definition of a lost classic.
another one of their r+b hooks that i can't get enough of these days is "all good?" from the first aoi. featuring chaka, too.
c'mon 3 march!!!!

In an impossibly excellent year for hip-hop, Buhloone Mindstate might be the best of 1993.
