some of the home decor items at Target are actually quite nice --> basic bitch?

― sarahell, Wednesday, February 17, 2021 7:27 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

So completely true. Also, when I'm outside of NYC Target is actually one of the chic-est places to get stylish things, more than GAP or Walmart or whatever. Target's women's work wear line is actually GREAT, their table linens and dishes are seasonal and great, and they sell my favorite sheets too.

I think I'm a basic bitch because I have worn a plaid flannel and jeans every day for several weeks (different plaid flannels, same jeans)

as a Minnesotan I've worn this outfit for probably 70% of my life

they had some cute art deco-y bathroom accessories when I went a month ago.

Target is cool. The menswear isn’t as extensive as the women’s clothing offerings, but even a man could look put together with the right target items. Not the one in Lincoln Center though—that Target is like a mini target and I couldn’t even find good athletic shorts there last time I went.

I've been window-shopping at Saks Off Fifth for the last several weeks, coveting items that have no relevance to my current way of life. Basic bitch, or dangerously hubistric?

basic bemidji

xp j.lu -- depends on the items!! due to covid there have been so many good deals on cocktail dresses and fancy women's clothing -- and some of them do qualify as "basic bitch" but some are very much not ... thredUp got a bunch of stuff from rent the runway that are like, $300 - $800 dresses selling for like $50 or less ... there are some things in my size. I don't even look at the straight sizes tho. I'm not gonna peer wistfully over that fence to the luxurious green grass of all the cute inexpensive things made for thin people.

February = Basic Bernie

two months pass...

made this alignment chart to explain cheugy

-> relevance of personal style = how stylish you are (on-trend or outdated in an uncool way)
-> awareness of personal style = how much you CARE abt being stylish (explicitly saying you dont care, actually not caring or caring a lot) pic.twitter.com/F5wIJIl5m4

not sure i agree with this...

Tracer Hand, Friday, 14 May 2021 23:00 (two years ago) link

this goddamn chart has been stuck in my head for 24 hours.

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Sunday, 16 May 2021 01:31 (two years ago) link

i think that broadly speaking it's correct

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Sunday, 16 May 2021 01:32 (two years ago) link

applied to guys at the gym, because that's the only place i go these days:

basic: track pants and a-shirt
fratty: shin-length under armour shorts, t shirt with distressed american flag on it
cheugy: american fighter
normie: cargo shorts and billabong t shirt
offline: adidas
dadcore: all black, crossfit shoes
naturally hot: nike
bimbo/himbo: short shorts, narrow-back tank top in a bright color

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Sunday, 16 May 2021 01:43 (two years ago) link

are there special cargo shorts for workouts? or do you mean just regular cargo shorts??

eisimpleir (crüt), Sunday, 16 May 2021 02:19 (two years ago) link

every gym has a regular cargo shorts guy

call all destroyer, Sunday, 16 May 2021 02:27 (two years ago) link

he cannot conceive of buying specialized clothing for working out so he wears some old cargo shorts and a scratchy cotton t-shirt. some white socks, possibly some sneakers he has dedicated to the gym. related, he is also probably not the most savvy dude in other contexts.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 16 May 2021 02:31 (two years ago) link

otm

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Sunday, 16 May 2021 16:00 (two years ago) link

damn, and i thought i was the least savvy person at the gym

eisimpleir (crüt), Sunday, 16 May 2021 20:27 (two years ago) link

I'm that guy except gym shorts not cargo
it's the gym who gives a fuck imo

largely confirms why I am so uncomfortable going to the gym, everyone is judging me

I wear cargo shorts every single day of the summer, and I don't just wear them, I put bulky shit in the cargo pockets, and EVEN I don't wear them to the gym!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 16 May 2021 20:33 (two years ago) link

I judge people who judge me so hard it evens out.

pomenitul, Sunday, 16 May 2021 20:35 (two years ago) link

Anyway I am in the upper middle (neutral evil?) of the nine boxes and I reject the label of "fratty," I think it should be marked "dad," but maybe the implied context of the grid is people 18-30 specifically. ("Dadcore," given where it's placed, is obviously referring to people outside the age cohort self-consciously and performatively dadding it up -- dadcore <> dad)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 16 May 2021 20:37 (two years ago) link

tbf the only one judging everyone is me

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Sunday, 16 May 2021 23:07 (two years ago) link

in any case no one looks good at the gym so it's ok

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Sunday, 16 May 2021 23:09 (two years ago) link

and i'm certainly not judging anyone, the gym is just a great venue for anthropology. i miss going but it loses a lot of its appeal when it isn't a 10-minute walk or 2-minute drive away.

call all destroyer, Monday, 17 May 2021 00:50 (two years ago) link

this type of shit is such a nightmare, everyone is always like oh over yourself no one cares, no one is even thinking about you, then of course everyone actually is

i still get a little freaked out and self-conscious when i go so i get it. i do notice people but in an ambient way? and like i've been going for years so like cad says it's just anthropology. honestly the only people i judge at the gym are people who don't rack their weights and bro-herds who load the bar with too many plates and can't lift it correctly. jerks basically. i'm inclined to think positively of beginners working out alone tbh and i think every other gym rat (but not the jerks) feel the same way. fwiw.

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Monday, 17 May 2021 01:46 (two years ago) link

yes.

also i'm cursed with the fact that i notice people in basically all settings and the gym is just a more acute one than what you usually get. i'm still haunted by the guy at the first gym i ever joined who worked out in literally three layers of synthetic, long-sleeve, long leg tracksuits so he would sweat out about 5 pounds of water every day.

call all destroyer, Monday, 17 May 2021 01:56 (two years ago) link

ew. the most annoyed i’ve ever been was at this guy, a “pacer.” he would just walk and walk all over the gym at all times when he wasn’t doing a set of crunches or whatever. On these trips he would without fail stroll up to the mirror, check himself out, then do an about face and march off somewhere else. Never not walking. I can’t put into words how much it tortured me lol. Not to turn this into a gym thread.

giants manager gabe kapler does some weightlifting in jeans and boots because “it feels good” or something according to radio interview this morning, feel free to google shirtless pics

one year passes...
two months pass...

Accidentally saw a reel that was themed "Every GenX Workwear" or something like that and all I remember was a choice of like 3 different pairs of low heel, low cut suede booties, and I was like wow just @ me next time.

kind of leaning into basic bitch dadcore lately

Say more?

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Monday, 24 October 2022 15:51 (one year ago) link

hmm i wear jeans and plain color polos or crossfit / gym t shirts a lot. i bought a "millenial fitness trend" branded trucker hat recently that i actually wear. i'm going the workwear route 10 years after it peaked and i'm 40 years old. i guess i would describe my look as "basic bitch fitness dad who may be undergroing a midlife crisis" with a few signs that i'm also flamboyantly queer, like these beloved and beautiful wesco engineer boots i'm wearing rn.

three weeks pass...

buying a fair few

oxford
cotton

of late, real basic bitch salaryman stuff
