More and more, I don't subscribe to the idea that the 2024 nomination is his if he wants it. Three points:

1) (I may have said this on another thread) Politicians are hyper-driven by ambition. The idea that all these people dying to run will just step aside down the road doesn't comport with human nature, whether or not he decides to himself.

2) Neither party has given the nomination to a previous general-election loser since Nixon in '68, and that was kind of a perfect storm of events (much like Trump in '16 was). They just don't do it anymore--you get your chance and that's it, you win or you're gone.

3) As Cuomo's present meltdown attests to yet again--the Cuomo who less than a year ago was the VP-in-waiting if he wanted it (with even murmurs of a emergency nomination)--the cliché that "(x amount of time) is a lifetime in politics" is a cliché for a reason. You could list dozens and dozens of examples from recent history. (Reading about the flameout of John Connally in Reaganland right now.)

So I think that, while Trump will be meddlesome and influential in whoever is the nominee, and that nominee could be just as bad and maybe even worse (hard to imagine, but looking at Greene and Hawley, who knows), I don't think it'll be Trump, even if he does run.

If MTG becomes the GOP nominee for president in my lifetime, that will mark the official end of my lifetime.

Why kill yourself just because other people want to kill you? Kind of seems like cutting off your life to spite your life.

It was only a short time ago, in 2015, when HRC managed to convince large numbers of her potential rivals that it would be futile to challenge her bid for the nomination, so all of them but Bernie decide to sit 2016 out.

true but there's a difference between HRC, an incredibly intelligent person who was First Lady, a US Senator, and then Secretary of State, and Trump, who has zero experience and understands basically nothing. Dems still believe that experience & tenure matter and that's why they put up candidates like Hillary and Biden - Republicans believe in nothing but punishing people they don't like, so any candidate who is thoroughly hated by the left has a shot

Trump is still basking in the glow of his failed presidency - his fans are by and large not big GOP supporters, they'll follow him anywhere but don't really care about party machinations.

But I wouldn't put it past him - an early announcement of his intention to run again. It's a way to raise money and organize massive super spreader events, to drop coy one liners, to attack his perceived enemies... his greatest joys in life.

I honestly don't think he even cares if he wins as long as he can keep up four more years of rapturous applause at his rallies. That devotion is the shit he feeds off of.

yeah by 2024, the storming of the capitol will have receded. some conservatives are still revolted by it or say they are but that will die down over time.

I genuinely believe that even with his diet and lifestyle, unless he goes to prison, he will be with us well into his nineties. If by some miracle he goes to prison, he won't serve a full year before croaking it.

Trump getting the 2024 nom would be an unmitigated disaster for the GOP. maybe pre-insurrection I could see it happening, but he's banned from all social media and even FOX won't carry his ramblings most of the time. I don't know if people's opinions of him will soften over time but I think as things return somewhat to "normal" over the next year the idea of going back to the way things were in 2020, a year so fucking awful that it became a meme onto itself, is going to be seen as thoroughly insane. You know those movies where a bunch of crooks & con artists pull off a scheme that relies on so many little things going right, only to attempt it AGAIN and fail miserably as virtually none of the same conditions apply anymore? That would be Trump in 2024.

And if he became a serious contender and/or got the nomination, he'd be back on every single one of them with lots of hemming and hawing about "learned lesson", "equal time", "newsworthy" and every other manner of bullshit excuse whomever is running Twitter and Facebook by then will trot out.
