Will that guy on Jeopardy ever lose?

he LOVES the game itself; he often seems more excited than some of the contestants

ha, that's one of the things i haven't liked about him as host. alex seemed to me like an unknowable voice of authority who existed on an entirely different plane of existence than the contestants. maybe that can't ever be replaced, but ken seems more like a guy who wants to stand on the field of play and be everyone's coach. he seems more like a typical game-show host in that sense. i liked that alex was not that.

Ken has done four days of work in the job tbf, it's entirely likely he'd get more towards his politely smart-assed stage and podcast character if he had the job full-time and was able to relax

they call him "Jaded" Jennings

fair point

I am wishing for a host with a deeper voice than Ken’s but he isn’t really failing in other ways. I mean he wrapped up some of his questions to the contestants sort of awkwardly but that is to be expected early on.

THE DON IS GONE (FlopsyDuck), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 04:38 (three years ago) link

the one thing he was doing that annoyed me was too long pauses before giving them a "correct"

More former Jeopardy champs as hosts, please. Ken has other hosting gigs.

I want it to be this guy:

yeah, Austin and James would each make more interesting guest hosts than quack TV doctors

I love Austin so much

new champ jon spurney is a musician/composer/session player who was in the original new york productions of both "passing strange" and "hedwig and the angry inch" and has a hella long music c.v. and like jeop music champs before him, he was slow on the buzzer in the one music category that came up on his first show. i'm a fan.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 18:24 (three years ago) link

(but not much of a fan of the showrunner who's hosting now. he's nice and personable and all, but he seems even more game show host-y than ken did.)

finally put it together last night that I recognized the last champ michael from being a panelist on best week ever and those VH1 "i love the (whatever decade)" shows

In the ILX-y spirit of list-making, here is how I would rank the guest hosts so far:

1. Ken Jennings
2. Katie Couric
3. Mike Richards

I will keep you all updated on my rankings.

today's champion told a heartwarming story of flying across the country to meet his wife on a blind date, who turns out irl to be a Federalist contributor and the author of "Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters"

when you know, you know.

friend: i've got a girl for you.
jeopardy champ: awesome. when can i meet her?
f: well, you're gonna have to fly 3,000 miles.
jc: for a blind date? f*** that.
f: she will never, ever let your daughters be seduced by a transgender craze.
jc: booking a plane now.

i wouldn’t be mad if Ken were host but i wasn’t loving it either, tbh i did welcome the current guy’s injection of suave confidence. the rest of that list of guest hosts is depressingly ghoulish. rip alex

Reference to St Paddy's day, I'm guessing..

nickn, Thursday, 18 March 2021 16:10 (three years ago) link

my guess is that the lolz are because "Potent Potables" is such a staple of Jeopardy parodies - am i right that it's always one of the categories in the SNL sketches, and never actually chosen by the contestants? but i'm pretty sure that stems from it actually being a classic, frequently-used Jeopardy category!

kt lowe, a librarian from st. clair shores, michigan, today's second place finisher, used to run a warren zevon fan site, which is my new all-time favorite contestant interview story.

fact checking cuz, Friday, 2 April 2021 02:57 (three years ago) link

warren called her one day to correct some errors on the site, thus beginning a long correspondence. that was the story :)

much better than the guy from the jennings run whose fun fact was that he listened to podcasts.

Yep. It's been a weird Jeopardy-free two weeks for me, but no fucking way am I watching Dr. Oz. I hope the show's ratings cratered during his hosting run.

Vague Spoiler: One of the contestants gets off a sick burn on Rodgers in Final Jeopardy.

blue whales on ambient (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 5 April 2021 18:23 (three years ago) link

Couric was bad, Rodgers is frankly unwatchable. Just the wrong guy to do this, no nuance and no rhythm. Everything delivered in husky, slow monotone.

i hated him at first but by the end of the ep i think i kind of love it - just a slow, soothing, HAL-type voice, like an AI hostbot.

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 14:36 (three years ago) link

exactly the opposite of what i want from a jeopardy host!

they should let the cash me outside girl host Jeopardy

frogbs, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 04:14 (three years ago) link

This is so funny to me. All three contestants heard the question as "who does America owe money to for its crimes?" And they all gave correct answers, but actually it was supposed to be about an official "bad guy" country for something absurdly tame in comparison. pic.twitter.com/SqjtGkUTiw

lmao that's amazing

I only watch Jeopardy via the arbitrary collections they put on Netflix in Canada, but watching episodes across the decades, I've been mildly surprised to notice how consistently and obsequiously devoted to celebrating the American military-intelligence complex the show is. So many categories—usually video at that—where they're showing off bases and planes and ships; watched one the other day with a whole video category devoted to the honorable men and women of the CIA. It's pretty depressing

rob, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 14:16 (three years ago) link

core audience has always been conservative and old

G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 15:44 (three years ago) link

oh for sure. And the show is almost inherently conservative since it has to draw on "common knowledge," inevitably culturally eurocentric and historically inclined toward Great Men. tbh I wouldn't even have remarked on it if they weren't so often site visit / video categories, which makes them feel like overt propaganda

rob, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 16:03 (three years ago) link

worth noting that (at least) the past decade of contestants skews much younger and more clearly culturally liberal than the viewing base

G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 16:52 (three years ago) link

yeah that's an interesting dynamic I hadn't really thought about before

rob, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 16:58 (three years ago) link

grist for a larger essay about how the young culturally liberal population in america is holding up the conservative entertainment/economic pipeline imo
