Will that guy on Jeopardy ever lose?

he LOVES the game itself; he often seems more excited than some of the contestants

ha, that's one of the things i haven't liked about him as host. alex seemed to me like an unknowable voice of authority who existed on an entirely different plane of existence than the contestants. maybe that can't ever be replaced, but ken seems more like a guy who wants to stand on the field of play and be everyone's coach. he seems more like a typical game-show host in that sense. i liked that alex was not that.

Ken has done four days of work in the job tbf, it's entirely likely he'd get more towards his politely smart-assed stage and podcast character if he had the job full-time and was able to relax

I am wishing for a host with a deeper voice than Ken’s but he isn’t really failing in other ways. I mean he wrapped up some of his questions to the contestants sort of awkwardly but that is to be expected early on.

the one thing he was doing that annoyed me was too long pauses before giving them a "correct"

new champ jon spurney is a musician/composer/session player who was in the original new york productions of both "passing strange" and "hedwig and the angry inch" and has a hella long music c.v. and like jeop music champs before him, he was slow on the buzzer in the one music category that came up on his first show. i'm a fan.

(but not much of a fan of the showrunner who's hosting now. he's nice and personable and all, but he seems even more game show host-y than ken did.)

finally put it together last night that I recognized the last champ michael from being a panelist on best week ever and those VH1 "i love the (whatever decade)" shows

i wouldn’t be mad if Ken were host but i wasn’t loving it either, tbh i did welcome the current guy’s injection of suave confidence. the rest of that list of guest hosts is depressingly ghoulish. rip alex

Reference to St Paddy's day, I'm guessing..

my guess is that the lolz are because "Potent Potables" is such a staple of Jeopardy parodies - am i right that it's always one of the categories in the SNL sketches, and never actually chosen by the contestants? but i'm pretty sure that stems from it actually being a classic, frequently-used Jeopardy category!

warren called her one day to correct some errors on the site, thus beginning a long correspondence. that was the story :)

Yep. It's been a weird Jeopardy-free two weeks for me, but no fucking way am I watching Dr. Oz. I hope the show's ratings cratered during his hosting run.

Vague Spoiler: One of the contestants gets off a sick burn on Rodgers in Final Jeopardy.

Couric was bad, Rodgers is frankly unwatchable. Just the wrong guy to do this, no nuance and no rhythm. Everything delivered in husky, slow monotone.

i hated him at first but by the end of the ep i think i kind of love it - just a slow, soothing, HAL-type voice, like an AI hostbot.

exactly the opposite of what i want from a jeopardy host!

He was awkward, and seemed lost during the q&a with the contestants, but I didn't hate him.

I only watch Jeopardy via the arbitrary collections they put on Netflix in Canada, but watching episodes across the decades, I've been mildly surprised to notice how consistently and obsequiously devoted to celebrating the American military-intelligence complex the show is. So many categories—usually video at that—where they're showing off bases and planes and ships; watched one the other day with a whole video category devoted to the honorable men and women of the CIA. It's pretty depressing

core audience has always been conservative and old

oh for sure. And the show is almost inherently conservative since it has to draw on "common knowledge," inevitably culturally eurocentric and historically inclined toward Great Men. tbh I wouldn't even have remarked on it if they weren't so often site visit / video categories, which makes them feel like overt propaganda

worth noting that (at least) the past decade of contestants skews much younger and more clearly culturally liberal than the viewing base
