amazing that dan issel and elvin hayes are still so far up there. never hear anything about those guys.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:25 (three years ago) link

yeah thought the same, of more specifically "who really is dan issel"

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:26 (three years ago) link

Literally never heard the name!

Rocky Thee Stallion (PBKR), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:31 (three years ago) link

Have to assume those numbers include ABA, I think Issel spent a good chunk of his career there (also Dr J so high up).

Elvin Hayes is before my time but based on counting stats alone he definitely seems under-discussed. Before I became a basketball trivia junkie Elvin Hayes and Elgin Baylor were definitely in the “I always get those 2 mixed up” pile

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:32 (three years ago) link

Issel is in the pile of guys who poured on points in the pre-Jordan era with like Terry Cummings, Kiki Vandeweghe, Jack Sikma, and more prominently Gervin, English, Dantley.

Maybe instead of good-stats-bad-team guys they are good-stats-bad-era?

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:35 (three years ago) link

Yah same had never heard of issel

a nice controlled drift (Spottie), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:36 (three years ago) link

issell was coach of the nuggets during my young collecting basketball cards days, so shiny skybox gold and a bad suit is how he lives in my memory

good call, that's what it is. it should really be nba totals only!

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:39 (three years ago) link

i feel the aba totals should be included

spoken like a dan issel fan who's deep undercover

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:46 (three years ago) link

i dan even know what issel about

The reason the NBA and ABA merged was because the ABA succeeded in signing a high percentage of the available hoops talent and was regularly grabbing away high NBA draft picks by offering them more money. This resulted in the ABA producing a high quality, enjoyable product that compared well with the NBA. Those ABA stats are worthy of respect.

Compromise isn't a principle, it's a method (Aimless), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:49 (three years ago) link

i respect them, and i also respect the fact that they weren't accumulated in the nba

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:51 (three years ago) link

I dan even own an issel

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 18:53 (three years ago) link

they weren't accumulated in the nba

The ABA and the NBA became as one, eternally merged and subsumed into one another, like the Holy Trinity, but with only two components.

also the letters are almost the same

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 19:17 (three years ago) link

and american and national mean the same thing in this case

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 19:18 (three years ago) link

one could go as far as to say it was the same sport played with very similar rules

Clay, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 19:18 (three years ago) link

its disrespectful to dr j to not include the aba numbers, which is frankly beyond the pale

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 19:21 (three years ago) link

as mod i declare aba stats to be valid and canon

Blake Griffin this season:

31.1 MPG
12.3 PPG
36.5 FG%
30.5 3P% (worst in NBA, min 6+ 3PA)
6.2 3PA/G

He hasn’t dunked since 2019. pic.twitter.com/ONmt3rgIvC

brutal

lag∞n, Friday, 12 February 2021 03:46 (three years ago) link

wonder if hes gonna pick up that $39m option next year haha

lag∞n, Friday, 12 February 2021 03:49 (three years ago) link

that offseason buzz about how blake looked good and could maybe be a piece for a contender not looking quite right

Steph is on a heater my friends

Steph Curry over his last eight games:

282 points, (35.3 per game) 96-for-169 from the field, 53-for-101 from beyond the arc.

John Collins shot 31/39 in his two games against Dallas this year

Heez, Friday, 12 February 2021 14:47 (three years ago) link

the world needs a steph mvp season

lag∞n, Friday, 12 February 2021 15:07 (three years ago) link

His numbers are on par with his unanimous mvp season they just need to win more games.

a nice controlled drift (Spottie), Friday, 12 February 2021 15:26 (three years ago) link

feel like if he keeps rolling and no one else does theyll prob win enough game for him to get it

lag∞n, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:13 (three years ago) link

maybe but when there are multiple worthy options so much of the mvp race has to do with buzz and narratives, and Jokic and Embiid are winning big in that column right now

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:20 (three years ago) link

kinda think its unlikely that embiid will continue to produce at current levels for the whole season, jokic on the other hand could even drop off some and still have a good case

lag∞n, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:23 (three years ago) link

i'm hearing "the numbers" do not like jokic's defensive season at all.

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:24 (three years ago) link

eh defense shmeefense

lag∞n, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:24 (three years ago) link

yeah Embiid's conditioning will get him in the end. remains to be seen whether mvp voters care about Joker's D

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:25 (three years ago) link

you guys lebron is getting it if he plays a full season

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:25 (three years ago) link

no sort of guaranteed imo

lag∞n, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:26 (three years ago) link

if anything the voters will be happy to give it to someone who hasnt won before should the opportunity arise

lag∞n, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:27 (three years ago) link

also looking upthread i'm sad about Blake. Hopefully his career can end with a dunkfest a la Kobe's last game to remind us how awesome it was to watch him back in the day. Although maybe that would just be sadder

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:31 (three years ago) link

the lebron narrative has been strong but seems to be dipping a bit of late. he had a better case for it last year i think.

a nice controlled drift (Spottie), Friday, 12 February 2021 16:36 (three years ago) link

hes 13th in scoring, sorry lebron is canceled

lag∞n, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:37 (three years ago) link

i think the fact that he didn't win last year and then they rolled everyone in the playoffs will cause a portion of the voting body to "correct" that. but his analytical case is really strong too.

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:38 (three years ago) link

if the lakers finish with the best record in the west and he continues this level of play i think he will win it... it will prob be deserved

if the sixers finish first in the east i think embiid will have a shot

i’m not see i steph having much of a chance unless the warriors get a top 4 seed which doesn’t seem possible

a nice controlled drift (Spottie), Friday, 12 February 2021 16:47 (three years ago) link

nash the last guy to win without being top 10 in scoring?

Clay, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:51 (three years ago) link

sounds right without searching re nash

Draymond Green has tallied 10+ AST in each of his last 5 games, all of which he started at center. The only other player to reach 10+ AST in 5 straight games in which they started at center is Nikola Jokic (since starters began being tracked in 1970-71). @EliasSports pic.twitter.com/RHjEAITHUR
