I have a friend who shares the name of famous actor Richard H@rris, and who one day in Prague spotted an old aquaintance from Bucharest up the street, disappearing into a crowd. He started calling after him, "Mike! Mike!" and then took up chase, weaving in and out of others, calling "Mike!"

Finally catching up to him, winded, he took him by the shoulder, "Mike!" The man turned around. "Mike! It's me, Richard H@arris! From Bucharest!" The man was startled, and nonplussed, because he was Dustin Hoffman.

I didnt see that ending, amazing

cpt otm (darraghmac), Monday, 8 February 2021 23:42 (three years ago) link

He should've known that Hoffman's maternal grandmother was from Iași, not Bucharest.

pomenitul, Monday, 8 February 2021 23:45 (three years ago) link

I didn't know he was actually Romanian!

it reminds me of the time i met an irish gay in london and he looked familiar and so i assumed i must know him somehow and started asking him all kinds of veiled questions about people he might knew interminably before finally just coming out and asking him how i might know him and he said "have you ever heard of the band westlife?"

plax (ico), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 17:27 (three years ago) link

Yes, I realized that the millisecond after I'd posted but I didn't know there was a gay one in Westlife tbh.

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 17:44 (three years ago) link

the gay one in Westlife is going to be the name of my next plant, thank you

Lol. Jordan Peterson is upset that Red Skull seems to have been modeled after him in a Captain America comic pic.twitter.com/RG3ZZYydDH

anecdotal certainly but not nothing (stevie), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 17:11 (three years ago) link

shame nobody at Marvel had any way of looking up photoreference for what a website looks like

Honestly "Red Skull ate nothing but meat for a year" would totally make sense to me

I'm losing it

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:08 (three years ago) link

the comic itself looks cringey as hell and JDP comes off as flattered/excited to me there, bad idea all around

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:14 (three years ago) link

yeah, I don't see where Peterson is mad?

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:21 (three years ago) link

Peterson almost died on a years long exercise to prove to the world he is a notable intellectual and not a proto-fascist self help guru, I will forever feel a sense of insecurity in him in that regard. For all the bad stuff we can say about that idiot, he does dislike the concept of white pride. I don't think he will be flattered to be the inspiration for a new rendition for one of the most famous fictional nazis we have today.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:21 (three years ago) link

Being parodied as a supervillain by a leading liberal would be a badge of honor for someone like him, as Keith Olbermann would still be talking about it if Trump had given him a mean nickname on Twitter in 2017.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:23 (three years ago) link

also, his recent book announcement died a sad quiet death so any attention is good for him right now

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:27 (three years ago) link

Would need to read the whole comic, but those panels seem a little “on the nose.” The idea is that red skull is using petersonesque self help to lure alienated white men into his evil schemes?

treeship., Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:30 (three years ago) link

I mean it’s kind of funny, I guess.

treeship., Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:31 (three years ago) link

Captain America, as a whole, is on the nose!

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:35 (three years ago) link

It does seem to be from the "tell don't show" school of narrative fiction, weird choice for a visual medium IMO.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:37 (three years ago) link

You should give Ta-Nehisi Coates writing lessons.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:43 (three years ago) link

"oh, you think Nickelback sucks, where is your number one hit"

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:52 (three years ago) link

which Captain America comics do you think are effective, treesh?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 05:17 (three years ago) link

The Coates run on Black Panther was close to unreadable imo. A rare occasion where an outsider coming in actually resulted in a more convoluted and harder to follow comic than if it had been one of the regular continuity hacks. Being a good essayist doesn't mean you're good at fiction, and scripting comics is yet another toolset altogether - but tbf the comics industry has rolled out the red carpet for writers far far worse at it than Coates.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 09:57 (three years ago) link

In promo interviews he said he’d never read any comics other than Marvel comics, which didn’t bode well for someone adapting to a new medium.

armoured van, Holden (sic), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 10:18 (three years ago) link

if the red skull doesn't know what websites look like that's on him and his site design team imo

mark s, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 11:26 (three years ago) link

yeah i mean he's gotta be like 100 years old, i'm surprised he knows anything about web design

armoured van, Holden (sic), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 16:52 (three years ago) link

"Jordan Peterson is happy a prominent Black man called him a Nazi" is a hell of a take

Dana Jel Pey (DJP), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 16:53 (three years ago) link

show me a tweet where he seems genuinely mad and I'll reconsider it!

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 16:55 (three years ago) link

Look, at least the thread managed to establish that TNC is more worthy of criticism than the guy leveraging bigotry into money and acclaim.

Scamp Granada (gyac), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 16:56 (three years ago) link

Being a good essayist doesn't mean you're good at fiction

Didn't his novel already prove this? As I recall, the reviews were pretty savage.

I mean in addition to his entire timeline over the past two days, there's this retweet:

Jordan Peterson shocked after learning comic links his ideas with villain https://t.co/WhOz9IFleW via OpIndia_com

— Dr Jordan B Peterson (@jordanbpeterson) April 6, 2021

worth noting that the source there is a Hindutva propaganda organ

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 17:34 (three years ago) link

You are giving him too much credit imo

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 17:59 (three years ago) link

he's a dramatic guy and he likes it when people misrepresent him because it gives him something to complain about. the opportunity to beef with tnc is something he'd definitely relish. simon otm.
