If the average person doesn't even recognize that it's a mistake, then yep, you're a grammar cop. Grammar in the linguistic sense of the word is intuitive to native speakers of a language.

Ok, I see the rules have been loosened to include groups or classes of people. Still sounds wrong, though.

Googling around, it looks like one of those things that has been done for centuries, and was never really a “rule”? I’m no expert myself, but that’s what these others are saying anyway.
