she's partially based on a character in the books and her story is kinda combined with that of another character, who actually does exist in the show now but his earlier story was allocated to drummer

I was discussing the season with a friend and realized the scope of how much stuff they quite possibly had to rearrange or excise, going back through the whole season, thanks to cas fucking anvar

like for example all those scenes of bobbie and alex doing basically nothing but sitting in the ship reading diagnostics...did they have bantz to go with that originally?

The book writers seem to be pretty clear that it's ending at the end of s6.

Just saw that Cara Gee was 8 months pregnant during the shooting of her S5 scenes, but you wouldn't have known it from the final shots.

The last one is *redacted* shit with the “red” faction, they could do really great things with Marco, the hub outside the ring... because I breezed past too quickly in the books, but it’s all tension

That was awesome. I’ve really enjoyed the Naomi sections in the show, absolutely gripping.

xp If it's like the books, which I've only read a summary of, they got eaten by the enemies of the race that made the protomolecule.

They finished filming Season 5 almost exactly a year ago and the allegations against Anvar didn't surface until a few months later so pretty sure they just filmed a few extra bits of dialogue to retcon his death into the finale. Might be wrong but looked to me like they just used am existing shot of Alex in his pilot chair and slowed it down or whatever to make it look like he was dead

I had this thought too. Everything about that shot/moment was suuuuuper odd.

It all kinda sucks but they were in a horrible position and they also couldn't really give him a "hero's death" or whatever, so this was almost the only way out

that seems like a proper explanation, because when I saw him staring into space, I didn't notice the trickle of blood supposedly in his nose, and I started getting aggravated ('why the fuck isn't he answering Bobbie? this is so annoying!')

they could have perhaps added a reaction shot from Bobbie/Naomi without Alex on-screen when they boarded the craft that might have given a little more weight to the scene.

the clumsy 2 second explanation from Holden to Naomi reduced it to "aww man, Alex is dead? bummer. let's watch Jeopardy!"

I will say it's been interesting to sift through the Expanse subreddit. lots of talk about the potential impact of recasting, how it could impact the future, etc, but absolutely no one thinking he should have been kept on, which is nice to see

I wondered if Amos's guest was supposed to be a replacement pilot since she had been one in th eescape.

Did Amos ask after the character he'd been patching up in the airlock and find out she'd survived too?

In the books there were chapters that took place on Medina station (the former Behemoth that basically manages the ring entrance/exiting) about disappearing ships ... it makes sense these were excluded from the show because they were peripheral and didn't have any of the main characters.

i was waiting for filip to finally flip on his old man - which is either still on the cards or we’ll never hear from the family inaros again except in rumour, either of which would suit me fine

appreciate all the observations upthread and agree with them mostly. it’s true that naomi’s harrowing ordeal didn’t really move the needle story-wise but it was totally gripping and great to see her get so much time to flex her chops (actually.. her brilliant and dramatic idea to hack the outgoing false rescue message... didn’t... really... have any effect on anything? did i miss something?)

what did naomi order up a missile strike on, from her hospital bed, btw?

i’m not sure the actress playing bobby gets enough credit for how consistently she maintains her pissed-at-the-world demeanour - and how despite being such a sourpuss she still manages to stay completely adorable

i hope the shot of Grumpy Security Guy holding alex’s mug isn’t foreshadowing a continuing role for him. he’s a weak link imo
