Nah Scarlett was great in Lost in Translation, a film I am very undecided about actually liking even though I love both the leads in it. I love the way she says “Evelyn Waugh was a man,”. I liked her in The Prestige as well.

If you already think Mark Hamill is bad, I would direct you to watch him reprising his role from the '90s Flash television series in the current Flash television series. It was a performance that, if he was not a name actor, would likely have gotten him fired and replaced on the spot.
I've seen this, it didn't stand out particularly much, because pretty much everyone in the series is (intentionally or unintentionally) very, very hammy and/or corny. It's just the tone of the whole thing.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:16 (three years ago) link

mark hamill was good in that one episode of what we do in the shadows

Jared Leto is the #1 and #2 worst actor.

A certain kind of bad, shoots for cage but far too bland, yeah but idk dont feel hes actually notably bad besides tbh

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:23 (three years ago) link

Which opinion would hopefully annoy him

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:23 (three years ago) link

Now

I love michael keaton

And think hes great in a few roles

But hes pretty bad

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:23 (three years ago) link

Gabriel Byrne is a blue-eyed nothing, mark s otm

You know what might make Mark Hamill less bad? If his every acting role didn't at some point involve an on-screen allusion to Star Wars (and yes, I know that it's probably as much the writers' fault, but he does presumably have a foot he can put down).

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:24 (three years ago) link

Even his WWDITS role (which wasn't bad, inasmuch as I didn't even realize at first that it was him) did this!

This is absolute nonsense. Please leave.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:26 (three years ago) link

Mark Hamill is frequently enjoyable in roles where attempting good acting would be shockingly gauche - Hopkins as Lector / Van Helsing would be a good comparison.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:26 (three years ago) link

Byrne in millers crossing is as good as any lead male movie performance since

Sir i salute yr keeping me honest itt

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:29 (three years ago) link

I don't know that I have strong thoughts about Byrne in general (partly because...I can't remember a single one of his other movies atm) but he is quite good in Miller's Crossing.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:29 (three years ago) link

Like I don't know that I would stump hard for Keaton as an actor qua actor, I don't know how much range he has really, but he is almost always a delight to watch and not infrequently the best element of movies he's in.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:31 (three years ago) link

And i love him

But when

Wait a sec

Mainly its actually when hes michael keaton, i realise

Interviews and such

Makes my skin crawl, profoundly uncomfortable to watch

I don't know that unconsciously quirky weirdoes can really qualify for 'worst actor' as their unconscious weirdo quirks will always carry them over the hurdle.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:32 (three years ago) link

Yes i think what we are distinctly seeking here are lack-of-character actors

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:33 (three years ago) link

Is Crispin Glover a good actor? Probably not. But he can never be a bad actor.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:33 (three years ago) link

I think costner is very valid offering but he's such languid beefcake srs courtroom detective perfection that it alone carries him

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:34 (three years ago) link

He can look away, amused, in a scene where someone says a line of dialogue to make him do so

Bloom? Never.

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:34 (three years ago) link

I will rep for Hammill as a voice actor. That's where he has found his niche for a long time now and probably would have stayed there if not for JJ Abrams.

He's corny as hell in The Flash, but so is everyone on it. I mean, this is a show where my superhero loving 9 year-old even gave up on it after three and a half seasons because it was "too cheesy and dumb".

You're right, I should never have Exhibit A-ed any CW DC show as they're all terrible and dumb even though I keep watching them for god knows what reason.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:36 (three years ago) link

Something was going on with Olivier in the late '70s. It wasn't just The Jazz Singer ("I hef no son!") but also The Boys From Brazil, The Betsy, A Little Romance... he was just really leaning into accents to a distracting effect

I think he was a prize ham anyway, I dislike English stage acting. Richard III, there's a weird distracting accent for you.

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:37 (three years ago) link

Olivier's fine in Carrie (not a ham) and The Entertainer (a ham on wry).

Bootlegs exist, thats what richard iii sounded like

Ha, we had never watched any of them but thought they might make for a decent show to binge with our son. The first few seasons of The Flash were fine, but then it got dumb and Arrow was a little too dark for him.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:39 (three years ago) link

xp As an example with costner in mind!

Its an art, this, not a séance

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:40 (three years ago) link

Agree re glover, who is a fine, fine presence and possibly even actor on the cage scale

We are, as stated, looking for the bryan ferry of actors, not the dylan/van morrison of actors

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:41 (three years ago) link

olivier in r3 is about as good as the material deserves

difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:43 (three years ago) link

imo the “tru acting” / “playing urself” dichotomy is being taken too seriously itt. people who can’t act can’t play themselves

i support the nomination of kit harrington. he's absolutely terrible in silent hill 3d: revelation, a movie i like bc it is kind of terrible but he's very bad in it still

ryan o neill, gene kelly, jude law, benedict cumberbatch

plax (ico), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:49 (three years ago) link

I've been neck-deep in Depression-era film over the past half a year or so and am struggling to think of anyone from that era who has been unjustly feted, as I've been pleasantly surprised that the big names have really lived up to their rep. W.C. Fields is maybe kinda terrible? I don't know if he really qualifies though because he's just a walking vaudeville act.

Oh, Lon Chaney Jr. was the worst. Nepotism run rampant, that.

Sorry to stir up so much controversy but it must be done.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:50 (three years ago) link

Ryan o neill yes

The rest, not close tbh

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:51 (three years ago) link

Kelly an awful actor but imo clearly called out at the onset the "special function" case

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:52 (three years ago) link

Yeah I'm not wild about Astaire's acting but that's not necessarily what he was there to do.

jude law was born to play the role of lenny belardo aka the young pope.
