I’m going to controversially suggest that Best Actress especially for a while in the noughties is a more ready source of material, especially the period where it was just big A list actors winning for doing something a bit out of range. Like there’s no way Sandra Bullock should have ever been nominated for an Oscar, let alone winning one, yet here we are.

Denise richards is an honorary model-turned-actress as per above, bullock is good comedically etc at least

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:43 (three years ago) link

Paltrow

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:45 (three years ago) link

Jeremy Renner is pretty bad but I wouldn’t say he’s Orlando Bloom bad.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:45 (three years ago) link

Gwyneth Paltrow was very good in Sliding Doors, far better than Sandra Bullock in anything I’ve ever seen. No way she deserved an Oscar though.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:46 (three years ago) link

andie macdowell finally found her level when she demonstrated reasonable competence at swinging her hair and say "i'm worth it"

ledge, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:46 (three years ago) link

Underserved oscar nods is a fair jump from orlando "hello i am orlando bloom" /CUT ok orlando one more go bloom

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:47 (three years ago) link

I mean andie is actually model-actress and imo pretty good in four weddings and groundhog day

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:48 (three years ago) link

Er, Bradley Cooper? Kinda feel like that one doesn't even need to be said aloud.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:48 (three years ago) link

"is she still acting? i hadn't noticed" < niche gag, xp

ledge, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:48 (three years ago) link

I can think of one actor I find especially wooden, but he's so revered, I won't name him, and won't confirm or deny. It's hard for me to think of someone where I don't like at least something they've done (I even like the wooden actor in one or two things). For a while I might have said Joan Allen, but that's in part a function of her characters, and she's pretty good in The Contender. Obviously, some of the worst acting ever is from great actors when they pass into self-parody--Pacino, De Niro, etc.

If cooper then bale

I think they're both fine tbh

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:50 (three years ago) link

bradley cooper is fine imo

He convinces me that he is an attractive untrustworthy american male in anything ive seen him in

Now, im not even actually sure if bloom is australian or british? but in no way has he ever convinced me of anything when performing it

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:53 (three years ago) link

I couldn’t pick Bradley Cooper out of a police lineup tbh, he’s just one of those actors who could be eight other people

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:53 (three years ago) link

rule #5 cast of starship troopers, showgirls and anything david lynch get career passes

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:54 (three years ago) link

Im now not sure that bale is, in fact, fine

Tho he charmed me in the ford vs ferrari one so

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:55 (three years ago) link

I don't know that I've ever seen Ed Harris in anything and thought 'hey, that was a good acting performance by Ed Harris'.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:59 (three years ago) link

he was good in the right stuff. so was dennis quaid tho. idk maybe the right stuff was just movie magic.

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:00 (three years ago) link

Was he not just ed harris in the right stuff

Feel like if im putting spacey, malkovich v def in contention then hopkins/harris are at least on verge

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:01 (three years ago) link

its not "have i never enjoyed x" either, spacey works in glengarry, harris is perfect and lemmon is tolerable, and all three are not good actors like

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:02 (three years ago) link

Ed Harris is a good candidate when he's in full-throttle George Kennedy mode (Apollo 13). He's very understated as Howard Hunt in Nixon, though.

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:02 (three years ago) link

mark hamill, and i dont wanna hear about his "yr uncle could do this" voice role as the joker, is rly the prototype here isnt he

shockingly bad, tripping over lines bad

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:06 (three years ago) link

That he looks cool wrinkly and bearded is Not A Defence

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:06 (three years ago) link

Ed Harris was good in The Truman Show cmon

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:08 (three years ago) link

If you already think Mark Hamill is bad, I would direct you to watch him reprising his role from the '90s Flash television series in the current Flash television series. It was a performance that, if he was not a name actor, would likely have gotten him fired and replaced on the spot.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:09 (three years ago) link

The Truman Show is good and I remember Ed Harris being in The Truman Show but I don't remember Ed Harris being good in The Truman Show.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:10 (three years ago) link

Agreed re ed harris, who did not strike me as outstanding as "ed harris in a beret" in the truman show

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:12 (three years ago) link

No one's mentioned Scarlett Johansson yet? I guess she's not actively bad, just incredibly bland an non-memorable in pretty much everything she's done.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:12 (three years ago) link

The problem with Hamill is that I don't remember anyone in the history of good actor discussions asserting that Hamill is a good actor.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:13 (three years ago) link

May bear study that ed harris simply struggle to escape the sheer gravity of his edharrisness

Scarlett is light and funny in several roles

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:13 (three years ago) link

Can I at least call Kevin Costner one of the most limited actors? His aw-shucks style works in some roles, but as such things go, Jimmy Stewart he's not.

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:13 (three years ago) link

Laurence Olivier. Neil Diamond was miles better than him in "The Jazz Singer".

― Waterloo Subset (Tom D.)

Something was going on with Olivier in the late '70s. It wasn't just The Jazz Singer ("I hef no son!") but also The Boys From Brazil, The Betsy, A Little Romance... he was just really leaning into accents to a distracting effect

Josefa, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:13 (three years ago) link

The first terrible performance of Harris' career was in The Hours, a film filled to bursting with awful.

The problem with Hamill is that I don't remember anyone in the history of good actor discussions asserting that Hamill is a good actor.

― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch),

In *no way* is this the bar

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:14 (three years ago) link

Costner is under the ford exception imo, certainly not a good actor at all tho

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:14 (three years ago) link

Where the fuck is mark s and his gabriel byrne nom

Nah Scarlett was great in Lost in Translation, a film I am very undecided about actually liking even though I love both the leads in it. I love the way she says “Evelyn Waugh was a man,”. I liked her in The Prestige as well.

I've seen this, it didn't stand out particularly much, because pretty much everyone in the series is (intentionally or unintentionally) very, very hammy and/or corny. It's just the tone of the whole thing.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:16 (three years ago) link

mark hamill was good in that one episode of what we do in the shadows

A certain kind of bad, shoots for cage but far too bland, yeah but idk dont feel hes actually notably bad besides tbh

Gabriel Byrne is a blue-eyed nothing, mark s otm

You know what might make Mark Hamill less bad? If his every acting role didn't at some point involve an on-screen allusion to Star Wars (and yes, I know that it's probably as much the writers' fault, but he does presumably have a foot he can put down).

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:24 (three years ago) link

Even his WWDITS role (which wasn't bad, inasmuch as I didn't even realize at first that it was him) did this!
