Is Michael Caine a good actor tho

Yelp for gyros (wins), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 14:55 (three years ago) link

gonna throw wahlberg out there (mark not donnie)

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 14:55 (three years ago) link

Going to make the case for Richard Madden.

Fine in GoT, Robb was always a fucking nonentity in the books to me anyway. And it’s not like he sticks around or is the worst part in that series.

But Bodyguard - fuck me, he started “fine” but got worse as the series went on. We were actually in pieces at some of his efforts in the last episode. Between the writing and his acting, never had a show turn to as shit as rapidly as that one went. I’ve actually been putting off watching Electric Dreams, even though it’s based on Philip K Dick short stories and has Cristobal Tapio de Veer on the soundtrack, because he’s in it.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 14:58 (three years ago) link

The two have been covered wins by all means dont read or post if youre only here to piss vinegar, good man

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 14:58 (three years ago) link

It's been dawning on me lately, and moreso with every subsequent performance I see, that Anthony Hopkins is someone who Americans have come to accept as a good actor because he has a British accent but who is in fact maybe a really bad actor.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:00 (three years ago) link

Travolta feels like hes been ok/goodish in roles

Possibly roles that relied heavily on one or two innate attributes but yknow im making the case that he cant still therefore be in the bloom/radcliffe gravitational pull

i mean does that make sense

xp iv never heard of ruchard madden, sounds like theres a case tho

looked up a few lists since and i think tbf lena headey is worthy of mention which would make three prominemt GoT mentions already, now youd have to worry if all are acceptable noms (ive never watched it)

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:01 (three years ago) link

and look feel free all to tear apart my noms because i will yours

Wahlberg is very, very funny in several roles which imo means he cant rly be in the running, unless you can imagine bloom or radcliffe ever being so (no u liar u can't)

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:02 (three years ago) link

Feel like caine has been good-to-ok in lots of stuff, comedy to watery eyed drama as well as early arry palmer era where all e ad to do was stand up straight

Would offer children of men as example enough really?

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:03 (three years ago) link

hopkins oof

I mean yeah maybe, the welsh malkovich like, can see it

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:04 (three years ago) link

headey was probably too good in thrones to merit this thread, but sophie turner and kit harington fit like a glove

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:06 (three years ago) link

Im at a loss not having seen it

Sounds like the acting is bad tho

Did they really get bloom/radcliffe fame tho

Its arguable that each also only got the exposure of the one big franchise role then found out, of course (bloom had pirates too but i like to think that was 'found out' from syllable one)

Im open

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:08 (three years ago) link

Its more a thread to rail against noms and make your own strong case anyways

Darts, not chess

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:11 (three years ago) link

Travolta is unacceptable to be nominated in this, Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction alone like. Hugely likeable in lots of other stuff although he’s been in a lot of shit as well.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:12 (three years ago) link

Laurence Olivier. Neil Diamond was miles better than him in "The Jazz Singer".

Sophie Turner no
Kit Harington yes, easily one of the worst breakout stars

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:13 (three years ago) link

xp gyac getting the spirit of things here imo

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:13 (three years ago) link

Actual lordling kit harington which surely wins him no fuckin points neither

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:13 (three years ago) link

Basically we're looking for people who are to acting what bryan ferry is to singing

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:14 (three years ago) link

Yeah, what of it?

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:14 (three years ago) link

Kit however is married to actual aristocrat Rose Leslie who can act, so idk what his excuse is.

Going to say Martin Freeman, have never enjoyed him in anything. Not one single thing.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:16 (three years ago) link

You can absolutely take this opinion and SCENE REMOVED

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:16 (three years ago) link

Freeman has no range but can do one thing quite-to-very well?

As i say the line is a blurry one but if youre to get him in a one liner wont do it i need you to pour your heart into it

Was Warren Beatty bad? I like a number of movies he's in but almost in spite of his presence. He just kinda always seems like someone who was on set while the movie was being filmed and who was swapped in after the lead fell suddenly ill.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:23 (three years ago) link

Like a grip who looks vaguely movie star-ish and is good at remembering lines.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:23 (three years ago) link

my mind keeps returning to nicole kidman

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:24 (three years ago) link

Beatty i considered but i mean presence/looks

Because, if him then redford imo and were getting silly now kinda

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:25 (three years ago) link

Not to defend kidman as brilliant but i mean id list four or five at-least-goods and the bar is orlando bloom

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:26 (three years ago) link

yeah she's not as bad as orlando bloom, but i do think she's gotten a bit worse over time. she's incredibly wooden in both of the prestige hbo series she's done.

Xp is top of the lake 2 one of those? Thought she was lovely and arch in that, and i mean as a show it was horribly bad

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:27 (three years ago) link

If there isn't one already, I feel inclined to start a companion thread for actors who are unquestionably Not Good but who are really compelling to watch. Like I've just recently realized how much I like watching Stallone do his thing. He coasts entirely on charisma while demonstrating zero thespiary skills.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:28 (three years ago) link

Basically we're looking for people who are to acting what bryan ferry is to singing

But Bryan Ferry does a spectacular imitation of a man who wants to sing!

Stallone is often super

It can stay in here though really its a coffee break room of a thread

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:28 (three years ago) link

xp no i'm thinking of big little lies and the undoing (which was so so bad)

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:29 (three years ago) link

Kidman's fine, you louts.

The obv answer is Michael Fassbender.

Soto we have been waiting for you and other notables

Defend malkovich and hopkins

Hell defend bloom if you like

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:33 (three years ago) link

Been thinking also that actors that are not very good but do one thing really well cannot be really considered

That saves deniro

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:34 (three years ago) link

I watched the early Katherine Hepburn film Morning Glory a few days ago which I felt was a really instructive depiction of what I consider bad acting inasmuch as she was truly fantastic in the role but she was portraying a would-be actress who everyone thought was a loopy fruitcake until she actually acted and blew everyone away with her performance but I was all like, wait, her in-character is acting of the Jon Lovitz 'ACTING!' variety and actually Not Good. Is that what people actually like? Very self-consciously actorly acting? Academy Award Nominee for Best Actor acting? Sheesh.

I'm going to comb through the list of Academy Award Nominees for Best Actor real quick and find some worthy entries for this thread.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:35 (three years ago) link

The only non-GoT thing I've seen Sophie Turner in is the X-Men movies and I find it really hard to blame her for those, esp the more recent one.

Radcliffe seems like a smart, cool dood who gets to do whatever crazy, idiosyncratic niche things he wants for the rest of his life, having made Oprah money before he was even 18. Can't imagine why there would be resentment

I mean, no-one is saying that he can't learn the lines, like Bloom it's his first and most vital qualification for us knowing who he is, if the question is "can he learn the lines" then the points could be easily given.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 8 January 2024 19:34 (three months ago) link

Bloom's got a new one that pairs him up with one of the worst actresses of all time, Andie McDowell:

gene besserit (ledge), Sunday, 10 March 2024 22:16 (one month ago) link

She had a critically acclaimed turn in “Maid”, recently. I always liked her, despite her confoundingly bad acting chops; Minnie Driver was a slightly better actor but has none of Andie’s odd charisma

braaam.flac (flamboyant goon tie included), Sunday, 10 March 2024 23:23 (one month ago) link

kind of agree with that

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Monday, 11 March 2024 00:22 (one month ago) link

Driver is a typical product of the UK private school system i.e an irritating, entitled af personality and full of shit, and this completely permeates her acting style. I still like Groundhog Day, don't like anything I have ever seen Driver in.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 11 March 2024 00:55 (one month ago) link

Eh, I met Driver once (we were being interviewed on the same radio show, I was up first); she was exactly as polite and friendly as I would want a total stranger to be.

Saw Fellowship of the Ring last month on da big screen, Orlando Bloom did everything he was called on to do, which was mostly stand there and look pretty, which is all most film actors do, like this is a movie where Liv Tyler’s performance is a parody of itself and of all future Lord of the Rings themed weddings, and it’s good, most performances in the movie have the wide-eyed blankness of Bresson models and nobody really knows the English language, most of the whole seventeen hour runtime is Elijah Wood’s humongous dewy eyes

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Monday, 11 March 2024 04:41 (one month ago) link

I thought about this thread recently as I was watching one of MacDowell’s daughters getting a ball repeatedly bounced off her head in Poor Things

imo Margaret Qualley can act a bit better but she definitely has some of her mom’s energy

I think even the 10 seconds that Margaret Qualley's in the trailer for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood takes her out of contention for this thread.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 11 March 2024 17:13 (one month ago) link

Yes they do. I had no idea they were actually mother-daughter, but any time MacDowell was on screen I was too mesmerised by her "cartoon bipolar" performance in general to really think about her chemistry with Qualley. I think they're both great in that series fwiw.

braaam.flac (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 11 March 2024 17:19 (one month ago) link

I literally called downstairs, my bf pays more attention to this stuff. "Did you know that Margaret Qualley is Andie MacDowell's daughter?" "No I didn't!" "So you didn't realise it was real-life mother-daughter casting in Maid?" "What??!?! It was??" I felt like I was crazy for not noticing this!
