Like I picked up a few Isleys albums from the 70s at a Chicago Salvation Army store a couple of decades agio, for 99c each, and they sound fine, and the previous owner had placed her address stickers on them, locating their old homes to somewhere on the south side, and I like to think of these old albums soundtracking some fun parties back in the day.

yeah I know it’s just a weird thing I have

brimstead, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:48 (three years ago) link

I quite like it - I like the sense that albums I bought had a life before they came to me (though I'd rather the vinyl itself didn't reflect that too explicitly). Also if it makes the record cheaper then I'm all for that.

I prefer my Sixties records in mono, which means I mostly have original pressings that often have names on them, and I love daydreaming about things like that. Who was the kid who originally owned this psychedelic LP, and what was going on in their life while they were listening to it? Were they nervous about the draft? Fantasizing about running off to California? Turn it off and decide to stick with AM radio?

the ones with bongwater stains are my favorite, fun to get high and feel a connection to someone who had this record 40 years ago

frogbs, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 22:28 (three years ago) link

I found an ancient stem in some old disco record that I got last year.

peace, man, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 22:55 (three years ago) link

I love some of the 12" dance records I’ve got which have been previously ownned by DJs, some using the time-honoured trick of covering up the names on the label to stop prying eyes, and imagining the happy dancing they may have provided in clubs in the past.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 08:37 (three years ago) link

I bought some All Seeing I 12"ers on ebay, the seller told me the labels had some scribble on, I said hey I don't mind..

Turned out to be D.J. Parrot's name and telephone number!

Mark G, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 18:15 (three years ago) link

didnt something like this happen once before, and it turned out to be the artist selling it to himself via a sock account or something?

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 18:52 (three years ago) link

suggestion: discogs should let you have two wantlists, one for generally available records that you'll eventually snatch at a good price, one for rare & unique stuff that you absolutely want to be notified about every time a new copy goes on sale

Chicken dinner!

Guys don’t @ me because I tazed my own balls alright? (hardcore dilettante), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 03:44 (three years ago) link

yeah it feels dumb putting things in my want list that I’ll probably never be able to afford... but I guess if something is reissued it’ll show up on my dashboard. That’s how I found out about this Brian Dalmini italo reissue

brimstead, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 04:06 (three years ago) link

Frogbs I know people with two accounts for exactly this reason.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 09:06 (three years ago) link

thats a great idea actually

i sold autechre's lp5 on discogs a decade ago, and the dude i sold it to just sent me a message saying that i actually sent the CD from ep7 - he wants to know if i can send him the correct one now!

dogs, Friday, 12 February 2021 14:56 (three years ago) link

Uh, what? Feedback limit is 90 days, so at least he can’t neg you for telling him to take a running jump.

Dan Worsley, Friday, 12 February 2021 16:26 (three years ago) link

I bought a used copy of a Broadcast CD and it additionally had an insert from lp5 inside it.

Noel Emits, Friday, 12 February 2021 19:38 (three years ago) link

tbh if i still had the ep i would just send it to him, but i don’t. definitely feels like the statute of limitations has run out

xps Lol. i did that to uh, Universal or something when I realized the Octopussy special features disc from my Bond box was a second copy of the feature. They told me to get bent. I was having a larf tho it was legit. I would not have messaged you on that one lol

I am in the process of selling my LPs on discogs because unemployed / desperate.

Just put up my Mum's first pressing of The White Album*, I have known it was worth something since I was a kid, however I am not keen to get ripped off here. Buyers are now sending me messages asking about the numbers stamped into the runoff and I have basically no idea if it's worth say £60 or £900 - does anyone have a book or some super secret website where these things are decided? Selling history is crazy.

* I know this is the biggest cliche possible, but it is actually a first edition numbered misprint, honest!

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 17:44 (three years ago) link

popsike might help a bit? sadly if you sell Beatles stuff you gotta be ready to really dig in to every tiny detail

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 17:49 (three years ago) link

I've sold a couple of numbered pressings of The White Album. In both cases, it took me a LONG time (maybe an hour?) to work out which was the correct release to list them under. Unfortunately, it's vital that you nail it down to the correct release: matrix numbers, label design, exact structure of the sleeve etc.

For what it's worth, one sold for £50 and the other for £55. They weren't in particularly great shape: the discs were both VG, and I think the sleeves were both the same.

Tip: from https://www.discogs.com/The-Beatles-The-Beatles/master/46402 use the "Find Your Version" button, then start narrowing it down from there, starting with Country and Format - you can even search by matrix numbers.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 18:38 (three years ago) link

yeah I find that searching w/the matrix number is effective at narrowing it down (a little, anyway)

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 18:42 (three years ago) link

agree that you'll have to do some research.

and, just a suggestion, but consider that you might have better luck on ebay. or anyway i prefer to sell beatles stuff there. it's my experience that the folks spending big money on collectable beatles stuff will part more readily with their $$$ when they see photos of your actual copy, see you providing detailed info about matrix numbers etc. and that way it's all there in the listing and you don't have to send photos to every individual potential buyer etc.

budo jeru, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 18:47 (three years ago) link

If it's a fairly desirable one I'd eBay it. Even the extensive listings on Discogs aren't comprehensive wrt variations of that record. Is it a UK one? Mono stereo? Top loader? All the bits.. poster, pics?

Noel Emits, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 18:52 (three years ago) link

how hot was the stamper

adam, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 18:52 (three years ago) link

Know what I wish? I wish you could somehow filter out compilations when you search all the items for sale for a particular artist. Yes, I know you can sort alphabetically, but I like to narrow my search results to US sellers and also sort from lowest to highest price (and sometimes by format). The way it is now, when I enter something like "Porter Ricks" using those parameters, I have to scroll through dozens of Wire Tapper-type cover mount CD comps and various DJ mixes.

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 14:04 (three years ago) link

Sometimes I feel like every website I'm trying to buy things from on the internet is missing the specific filtering parameter that would be most helpful for me to use.

peace, man, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 14:15 (three years ago) link

yes, ditto!

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 14:27 (three years ago) link

ugh, just finding out that Discogs is abandoning processing credit card payments so now I have to do Square or something if I want to keep CC payment as an option.

justice 4 CCR (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 24 February 2021 16:08 (three years ago) link

finally getting around to adding my collection to Discogs...not really planning on selling anything but it's fun to see what's noticeably "worth" more than I originally paid for it (i.e. every metal album I own and a couple random things like Paul Cary's first album)

stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 February 2021 18:37 (three years ago) link

yeah when i did that it was fun to see that out of the 10 most valuable records in my collection (per discogs), probably 5 or 6 of them are random things i never would have guessed

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 24 February 2021 19:07 (three years ago) link

pretty amused to see the piss yellow version of the Yellow River Boys record selling for $60 on there when you can still buy it on Bandcamp for $22

frogbs, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 19:30 (three years ago) link

lol I was at Walmart on Monday night and picked up the color vinyl they had for 'Tango In The Night' because my og copy was kind of a beater, and when I was checking out I realized it was discounted to $9 so that made it even better. And then when I went to add it to my discogs collection I saw it's been selling for $50 and that melted my brain. I guess it really *was* a limited edition.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 February 2021 03:54 (three years ago) link

Damn, sounds like walmart has been vinyl than target.

brimstead, Thursday, 25 February 2021 04:15 (three years ago) link

“better” not “been”

brimstead, Thursday, 25 February 2021 04:15 (three years ago) link

They have all the Queen's Greatest Hits, Pink Floyd's The Wall, and AC/DC's Back In Black you can shake a stick at.

They occasionally do limited runs, and I went there looking for Counting Crows' August And Everything After because I didn't realize it had been released in a limited run in January until that day, but I had no luck (people are already asking inflated prices on ebay and discogs). They also just had an exclusive Metallica drop (six albums, all on colored vinyl), and those are disappearing fast. I could only find Ride The Lightning, which I plan to flip soon lol.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 February 2021 04:24 (three years ago) link

I must not've been to a Walmart in a long ass time

frogbs, Thursday, 25 February 2021 04:29 (three years ago) link

They don't even do cds anymore, but every store afaik has one small section of the electronics dept dedicated to about 50-75 vinyl records (lots of classic rock, a couple contempo country things, a couple top 40 things, and then whatever the "exclusive" at the time is). tbh Monday night was the first time I'd ever bought anything there, though.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 25 February 2021 04:41 (three years ago) link

Yeah this bugs me as well. It's not just compilations but any release where the artist appears in some capacity. I had the same observation a while back for Philip Glass:

As a buyer, Marketplace search is infuriating. If I enter Philip Glass as artist, for example, it returns hundreds of items where he is mentioned anywhere in the listing, be it as composer, guest appearance etc. Is there no advanced search functionality which only returns items released under his own name?

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Thursday, 25 February 2021 12:15 (three years ago) link

yeah, see, I hadn't even considered composer credits. In the case of someone like Glass it probably adds hundreds of releases, right? Ditto every even halfway established indie band who's ever appeared on a CMJ or Uncut sampler or something. Definitely a design flaw of the search.

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 25 February 2021 13:29 (three years ago) link

The best thing to do is:

1) Go to the Artist page, e.g. https://www.discogs.com/artist/975-Porter-Ricks

2) Click the "For Sale" link towards the top right corner of the Artist page, e.g. https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?artist_id=975&ev=ab

3) Click "USD ($)" on the left hand column, to filter items for sale so that only US sellers are shown: https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?artist_id=975&ev=ab¤cy=USD

4) At the top of the list, where it says "Sort By:Listed,Condition,Artist,Title,Label", click on Artist.

5) Scroll through the remaining list until you reach Porter Ricks. If needs be, alter the number of items in the "Show" drop-down box to the maximum of 250.

6) If there are still pages and pages of results, as there are for Philip Glass, fiddle around with the page suffix number at the end of the URL, until you get closer to his own section - in this case, at https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?artist_id=20691&ev=ab&ev=ab&sort=artist%2Casc&sort=artist%2Casc&page=20

damn mike that is some next level shit, thanks

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Thursday, 25 February 2021 15:43 (three years ago) link

All I would add is that you could also filter by “ships from” in place of / as well as currency.
