beach boys and bruce springsteen are lifelong headscratchers for me. can’t relate to what others see there _at all_. both repulse me on a visceral level like mighty mighty bosstones or something tbh.

Yeah, there's definitely something about Bruce Springsteen that repulses me as well. I can't really explain it. Something about his voice maybe, I'm not sure what it is.

He's too American for me. Like full-blown, all-out, unashamedly over the top American. It's too much for me to bear.

xp It's true though! I like loads of American artists with their own particular take/fringe/niche of an America - real or imagined - but jfc Springsteen is America, it's too much!

I 100% associate BS with growing up feeling alienated in a small, small-minded american town where the foreignness of my parents was often remarked upon (I mean they were only Welsh and English ffs, but that was wildly exotic there). I can hear it with different ears now but that association is pretty bone deep

Springsteen wasn't """America""" until 1984. In his earliest days he was sort of weird and at least conceptually interesting, the center of a Bob Seger/Tom Waits/Al Stewart triangle. But then he tried to go Phil Spector and wound up Jim Steinman instead, and it's been one bad artistic decision after another ever since, the whole """America""" thing being just one of them, but the one that stuck hardest.

I once asked Dave Mustaine how he could play so fast on heroin, and he said it was mostly muscle memory.

N.B. re Springsteen: I do not like any of his music, not even the at least conceptually interesting 1970s stuff.

I actually like his lyrics and voice; just don't always find the music engaging enough to keep me coming back to complete albums. "Born to Run" is amazing.

'State Trooper' is memorable.

unperson, that doesn't quite track for me. he's had steinman-esque tendencies from the beginning, cf. "growin up," "jungleland," "rosalia"

and i'd say the "america" connection started to really form up with nebraska (named after an american state, after all), before he made it obvious with that famous born in the usa album cover

I don't hate 'em, but I don't get the Kinks for this very reason. I had no idea what a village green was before I set foot in the UK.

xp I love Bruce but am always secretly a little surprised when anyone else does, because my love for him is so personal and has relatively little to do with the actual music. There's a clumsiness or a try-hard quality about his work that I personally find endearing and compelling but could just as easily find off-putting. He doesn't seem to have a natural genius for anything in particular, and so everything - his singing, his guitar playing, his lyric-writing, his storytelling, even his looks - seems like something he built for himself out of found materials that are just a little heavier than what he needs. I think that's cool but could see someone just going, "ugh why is there so much of everything???"

My reasons for coming to love Bruce were suuuper literal and predictable and had to do with moving to a small town, buying a car, making friends with people with names like Bobby and Johnny and watching their lives slowly disintegrate and their dreams die, and then leaving said small town and getting hit by a wave of loneliness, culture shock and survivor guilt. It's hard to imagine how I would react to his music if I didn't have that sense of direct personal identification as a starting point.
