also where is "i wanna roll stuff UP, i don't wanna NOT roll stuff up" thread?

thomp, Thursday, 9 July 2009 18:20 (fourteen years ago) link

uh... what?

From what I remember there's only a bit of photography you actually are required to do - but every level had the opportunity to snap some shots, which I always took. You don't actually get that much out of it from a gameplay reward standpoint, but I often found it as enjoyable as the main game.

Nhex, Thursday, 9 July 2009 18:57 (fourteen years ago) link

the photography is throughout. most of the time it's just to rack up some dough but occasionally it's required in order to document things for your underground organization's newsletter..

i can not find this either :(

thomp, Monday, 13 July 2009 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link

slight annoyance at needing to get a couple more pearls was erased by the hilarious hijinks of the looters' caverns, which i would have never bothered with if not a little light in my wallet

this game continues to surprise and delight me with its little touches - the looters' ships look like police cars, for instance; and every time you go back to the pedestrian district there are MORE soldiers around, and the propaganda is more extreme

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 09:37 (fourteen years ago) link

wow uh this final boss battle is like KINDA FUCKING TOUGH MUCH?? jesus christ.. i'm starting to think i didn't bring enough k-bups with me

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 09:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I really loved this game until I got to a really annoying part where I had to sneak past/destroy 4-5 of those airpack guard and couldn't do it without being caught/killed. I wanted to see the game through to the end but that bit pissed me off beyond belief so I didn't bother.

I will still play the sequel, if/when it comes out.

salsa shark, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:58 (fourteen years ago) link

i actually thought the sneaking sections were pretty easy! then again my reflexes have been honed to a titanium edge by MGS etc

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 21:52 (fourteen years ago) link

enjoyed this game up to the final boss, never beat that one and don't feel like trying again

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 22:16 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah it's REALLY out of keeping with the rest of the game. it's like they felt they just had to throw in, all at once, right at the end:

- an uberbaddie who was barely glimpsed before, and who was the actual puppet-master all along
- a heretofore unknown "power of healing" that jade has
- the suggestion that jade is actually a member of the baddie alien race, or has their "blood" or something

have i left out any modern videogame cliches??

that said, i thought the final boss battle, though very tough, was cool in that you used basically all the attack techniques that you'd learned during the game

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 22:54 (fourteen years ago) link

but yeah, absolutely fuck all happens afterwards, which is how i can understand people saying it's too short. it feels abrupt. i would have liked to see the TV anchor again, i would have liked to come back to hillys for a little bit, hear some fine words from the iris crew, see rufus the shark get ambushed by emotion, hear some comic relief from the dog. what's going to happen to the lighthouse? what about the kids???? for a game that was so good at sewing the story together it feels weird.

but it's not too short. it took me like 19 hours. any work of fiction that takes more than 10 hours of your life is not too short.

i should record here that this game is terrific at surprising you with sudden action scenes. not sudden battles, but sudden action - a space war suddenly materializes around you, or you're suddenly running across rooftops dodging bullets and explosions --

which is really the heart of why this game is so great. you don't really know how to do it, you just ARE. from the opening scene where you're thrust right into the middle of a bunch of aliens with a staff you've never even swung before, to the domz attack that happens right after you get your spaceship, to the escape sequences, to the looters' caverns, to trying to get your broken-down hovercraft to mammago's - it's all stuff you just pick up and do, and it's thrilling to be able to have faith in the game that it won't make you feel like an idiot or die 20 times before you get the hang of it. there's no training level - the whole game works against that entire concept.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 23:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i am almost convinced but then i remember you also started a thread repping for fahrenheit

thomp, Thursday, 16 July 2009 00:02 (fourteen years ago) link

ha

this is built on established play mechanics though - it's not a weirdly formed homunculus of narrative and QT events like fahrenheit was

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 16 July 2009 09:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I think Tracer is almost certainly overhyping this game, but it is still worth it. Fact is, it's a very solid cinematic 3D action adventure game of its time, with solid direction, writers, musicians, actors, artists etc. that push it well above average, perhaps into great territory. It's all wrapped in this warm atmosphere that evokes good kid fantasy/adventure films from the '80s. (also yes not nearly as crazy/experimental as Fahrenheit)

There was one moment in the game though, that I really loved - that surprise rush through the rooftops - you know which one I mean.

Nhex, Thursday, 16 July 2009 11:27 (fourteen years ago) link

yes.

and in most games, you would have to play that part 20 times in order to not die and by the time you'd finally done it you'd never want to see it again.

i guess i'm so psyched because i've been out of the loop for long enough to just not realize games like this existed. also i am a sucker for the politics/journalism angle, i will cop to that.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 16 July 2009 13:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Some of the game's voice acting and sound design are so ethnically fetishistic and colonial that it was hard for me to stomach the opening acts.

This game had way too much boring stealth stuff. Actually the only thing i remember really liking about it was the song playing in the bar. "Propaganda!"

I am intrigued by this game but only have a PC, which the HD version is not scheduled for.

Anyone played the original PC version? Is it worth getting, should I hold out for PC HD, or does this really need a console to be appreciated?

i seriously don't recall any frustration with the camera! is it that you don't have full free control of the camera like you do in FPSes?

anyway, it's coming to PS3 in "may 2011". whether that means may 1 or may 31 i don't know.

hahah james i have noticed X-Y axis rants dominating every forum discussion of this game and... like... i have never noticed that?? is it because i don't play FPSes? i've played plenty of third-person adventure games, though..

raced through about 60% of this and then life intervened.

- unfortunately am still in the slaughterhouses, my least favorite part of the game.

+ i have already done most of the sneaking sections

- (i love sneaking)

- think i must have missed a door or something and may have to backtrack

+ still haven't done any of the smuggler's caves yet! (which i love)

I got this today. I hadn't played the original, but I read about it and the world seemed really interesting. I'm only about fifteen minutes in but so far so good, more to follow.

The camera controls (the game viewpoint, not the thing you take pictures with) is pretty fucking stupid though. Ocarina of Time wasn't like this, was it?

fields of salmon, Thursday, 14 July 2011 05:53 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know, i never played it!

there have maybe been four or five places where the camera didn't do what i wanted it to but i didn't think about it otherwise.

one year passes...

Just finished this again, Tracer otm throughout this thread - the one complaint (apart from the multi-killing boss at the end) is that on the PC the up and down keys for piloting the airship are the wrong way around, hilarity ensues etc.

Tracer particularly OTM about the fluidity of play styles - hey now you're in a hazard object race car, hey now you're in a stealth game, hey now you're in Pokemon Snap.
