i'm guessing the FBI told her to stay quiet while they're investigating members of Congress to not move the needle / embolden others to try again, but she's legit pissed off and had to slip something

There was an armed insurrection that stormed the Capitol 3 weeks ago, it would be odd if you didn’t feel uneasy about that

It's not that, if I have time / inclination I'll elaborate later.

You have to love (not) the threat veiled as an apology request.

xpost I know what she was advised, I just don't see why she would necessarily decide to take that advice.

Really? You are surprised that a sitting member of Congress would just ignore the legal/security advice given to her about an outstanding investigation for an event that didn't even happen a month ago and for which most people implicated are still walking free and openly intimidating her? I think what she's already said is brave enough as it is.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:03 (three years ago) link

Yes, I am/was a little surprised, because as the live thing yesterday showed, her scary story lines up very much with similar scary stories I've read about that day (like, for example, Pressley revealing the panic buttons in her office had apparently been ripped out; any more details on that?). AOC and others should absolutely keep safe rooms, maps, escape routes and other security stuff secret, and she has, but she implied that fellow sitting members of congress were actively trying to get her killed. That doesn't seem like the sort of thing you just put out there, let alone something she would be advised was OK to say. I trust AOC, but maybe as adept as she is her inexperience is showing just a little; if there's an ongoing investigation, I'm not sure what's gained by cryptic tweets or livestreams. After all, Pelosi and others were and is directly threatened, too. Hell, Pence was directly threatened that day. The FBI seems to be doing a pretty good job tracking down everyone implicated, at least so far. AOC's outrage is absolutely justified, but if there's more that needs to be done right now than what is already being done I wish she would say what that should be.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:40 (three years ago) link

I genuinely think AOC is torn between wanting to be as crystal clear and forthcoming as she usually is, but knowing there are just some elements she can't feel free to divulge just yet. Maybe it's because I generally like her and want her to stick around, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt that she knows what she's doing.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:42 (three years ago) link

Possibly she knows what legal advice is, is weighing up the importance of the "trust the system" measured route of pelosi et al and sees the damage done already fading into business as usual and is making a conscious decision to reject it?

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:45 (three years ago) link

regarding Michael Tracey and his ilk, this thread is a pretty cogent take on the endless outrage cycle

I’m not gonna amplify the content on purpose but professional cretins like michael tracey & david reboi are part of an elite goon strike force who recognize the crisis of AOC recounting her capitol experience & immediately go crashing in with the shittiest takes possible

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:46 (three years ago) link

I'm sure detractors are going to frame her comments about the "belligerent Capitol cop" as mere undeserved projection, but she wasn't watching this on TV, she was living it in real time, so it's not as if the narrative of "why aren't the cops doing more??!!" or pics of cops taking selfies was influencing her perception.

not to mention, if you're a Capitol police officer entrusted with keeping the peace (lol yea right) and protecting the officials within, I would tend to think you wouldn't approach the door of a sitting Rep , not announce who you are or why you're there, bang on doors, and yell/scream angrily. so who knows whether they were just bad at their job, sympathetic to the QAnon folk, or secretly part of it. it's horrifying to know that the people who should be protecting you may not be on your side and that you have zero ability to ascertain that in real time.

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:47 (three years ago) link

Josh, for someone who loves crowbarring mentions of his wife and daughters into almost every post, you don’t seem to get women at all.

The lesson AOC is demonstrating here: you have to have your own back, because sometimes nobody will speak up for you otherwise. What she has done is really fucking brave.

AOC has clearly made the calculated decision that speaking out prevents the issue from slipping into the background, that she personally recognises the threat to her and that she has a duty to speak out for when the next time happens (and there will be a next time). It would be great, I say from the UK where a female politician was murdered in the street by a fascist less than five years ago, if political violence wasn’t brushed aside or pretences made that those encouraging it are acting in the same sphere as those subject to it.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:51 (three years ago) link

None of it seemed remotely cryptic to me, she was very clear in what she was saying and how she said it.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:52 (three years ago) link

When kids do drills in school for a hard lockdown with a suspect *in* the building, that means you don't open that door for anyone no matter what they say, except the police, who will announce themselves as police *and* have their own key.

It doesn't seem unreasonable to hold the Capitol Police to a little bit higher standard, in terms of their ability to follow protocol & behave respectfully and responsibly in protecting high-status targets in a dangerous environment.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:54 (three years ago) link

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 15:59 (three years ago) link

Because I wonder why you find AOC’s story so hard to believe, that you are expressing doubts all over it all over this thread rather than trusting that she might know what she is talking about and doing, and I think you should know exactly how this attitude comes across to women on ilx.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:03 (three years ago) link

reading between the lines she definitely seems to be implying that certain members of Congress were helping the rioters or at least were giving them directions. I know there was a lot of talk about a certain member (Boebert?) giving tours to the people who raided the Capitol the next day.

frogbs, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:05 (three years ago) link

She’s not the first person to say that either - James Clyburn said they went straight for his unmarked office.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:07 (three years ago) link

yeah, it sound like what she was alluding to was talk amongst her colleagues, about Boebert and MTG specifically, rather than something only she saw

separate to the implications tho frogs its why shes v deliberately breaking lines here and i think its v much of a piece with her independence from senior dems in "we must hold the pieces together" adulting

Shes right, if so- but casting it as her just making a mistake unthought does imo seem to be going out of yr way to brush her approach away

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:09 (three years ago) link

gyac, sorry for losing my temper, but I 100% believe AOC! I've never said I didn't! I have zero *doubts* about what she is saying (and the same goes for Pressley, and Clyburn, and others). I've only asked why she has edged really close to directly naming fellow congress people as conspirators but not done so yet if that is the case. Not doubting that there could be some congressional coconspirators, and for sure Boebert and MTG seem like good candidates. It just seems like getting them out of there ASAP would be a priority, and if there's not enough movement on that front I wish there were. Outright naming them would I think get the ball moving faster, but maybe not.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:12 (three years ago) link

Yerac, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:19 (three years ago) link

also important to mention that AOC feels like her life is actively in danger, possibly moreso than any member of Congress in history, which I think affects her decision to go public, particularly since it does look like they're trying to sweep this under the rug

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:26 (three years ago) link

since MTG has recently harassed another member of congress in the hallway, and boebert carries a gun everywhere, and both would sue her for slander, or do something worse, maybe she has made a calculated decision not to name them. it doesn't matter to me what her reasons are, though. to suggest she should be doing more is shitty. it's not her job.

Holding elected officials accountable for abetting a fascist coup is a threat to democracy iirc.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:38 (three years ago) link

that's the most frustrating thing about this, people like Cruz, Hawley, MTG, and Boebert should all be immediately ejected from Congress and never be allowed into public life again but the Trump era kinda wiped out the entire notion that rightwingers should face any consequences for their actions, and if you're someone like AOC I dunno how you take your mind off "next time they might actually succeed"

I know this is the AOC thread but I feel like screaming from the rooftops that Rep Cori Bush has NAMED MTG AS HAVING THREATENED HER IN THE HALLWAY OUTSIDE HER OFFICE and all that happened was that Pelosi graciously allowed Rep Bush to move HER OWN OFFICE somewhere else so she and her staff wouldn't be in danger from either covid or being shot by a fellow representative, take your fucking pick.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:44 (three years ago) link

You speak up and try to make it hard for them to ignore what happened. Not the perpetrators, the people who don’t want to face it. Make it hard for them, make it bad.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:44 (three years ago) link

I think if there's one thing all of the squad have learned by now it's that no one in the established Dem party is going to protect them, politically or actually physically, when the danger could not be more obviously announcing itself with stormtroopers. AOC is using tech that her elders don't begin to understand, in order to connect with people and tell the truth so she can't be muffled by her enemies OR her "allies."

So maybe less of the "maybe the junior representative from the Bronx doesn't understand the political landscape" doubts cast everywhere.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:52 (three years ago) link

again, we had a President who openly committed dozens of crimes while in office & lied to the American public literally every time he spoke, and every single Republican member was basically fine with it. there isn't really a "political landscape" right now

frogbs, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 16:58 (three years ago) link

a thing that makes me very sad to think about is how openly hostile democratic leadership has been to AOC and how eager they remain to ~bridge the divide~ with republicans even after the breach at the capitol

I thought that was debunked and it was Boebert giving a tour of the Colorado capitol some months ago.

Mosholu Porkway (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 17:11 (three years ago) link

“openly hostile democratic leadership...” yeah okay pump the breaks maybe it’s is a bit of a stretch and morally questionable probably to force an equivalency here between her harrowing and legit scary experience of right wingers coming into where she works to harm her with disagreements she’s had with other representatives in her party. Keep in mind I don’t think these people were planning on having a nice friendly chat with Pelosi if they found her either.

“Big” Don Abernathy, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 17:20 (three years ago) link

Think I originally read about this on twitter so I forget what the source was, but here's at least one article reporting that the leader of the Oath Keepers was getting messages from inside the building about the specific whereabouts of officials, such as "Tom, the speaker has left the chamber" and others detailed here:

https://www.businessinsider.com/capitol-siege-far-right-rioters-used-facebook-to-hunt-lawmakers-fbi-2021-1

The implication aiui is that some of the intel had to be coming from fellow officials bc the invaders never actually saw Pelosi & others that day and wouldn't have known exactly where they were/when they were being moved.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 17:25 (three years ago) link

She’s gotten good committee assignments and had establishment Dems co-sponsor bills w her. This angle isn’t necessary.

i don’t see how anyone with progressive ideals can maintain faith in electoral politics when a young woman who’s just a little more progressive than the bulk of the party gets so shut out and so consistently disrespected and undermined
