That NYT article reminded me of this anecdote (as recounted in Michael Lewis's The Fifth Risk):

On his visits to the White House soon after the election, Jared Kushner expressed surprise that so much of its staff seemed to be leaving. “It was like he thought it was a corporate acquisition or something,” says an Obama White House staffer. “He thought everyone just stayed.”

The thing is, if I brought a scythe, I'd try to scare him into retiring. He's stared down Nino and Alito, so who the fuck knows the limits of his selfishness.

I just finished reading 'Golden Gulag' and yeah, that private prisons EO is fine but doesn't actually accomplish much.

Joe Biden had won it,
The Democrats had done it,
And Donald read the comics all the while.
Covid babies being born,
Mitch McConnell we would scorn,
So down on the beltway,
SCOTUS went on trial.

marjorie taylor greene makes complete sense when you realize she doesn’t even live in the rural district she represents. she lives in a wealthy north atlanta suburb and she used to come into the whole foods i worked at to yell at my friend for cutting her ham too thin

One of Obama's first EOs was to shut down the prison at Guantanamo Bay... look how that worked out.

Why we still have a base on Cuba is beyond me... it's barely 90 miles from Florida, we're no longer at war with Spain.. let it go.

I disagree with this. The party platform has absolutely shifted to the left, in no small part because of Democrats like Sanders, Warren, and the Squad.

I've heard a few people over teh last couple of days saying taht the new administration's security set up hasn't come into being yet so the actual effect of things can't have been fully felt. GOP are scum which is pretty much a given by now isn't it?
Hopefully there will be wider cosnequences.

Have heard taht a possible overlooking of th enon ringleaders in teh insurrection has been changed. Sounded like FBI etc were going to let those people not 'actively involved' in the insurrection weren't going to be prosecuted which sounds a bit loopy since those people were involved in being inside the Capoitl in an armed mob which should be bad enough in itself and would have been unthinkable under most circumstances. Heard people talking about their disappointment in that yesterday morning which may have dated from at least teh night before but it seemed that thought had evolved since then and prosecution would be done. Does seem like i might have been right about FBI etc having sympathy with the right wing which is outrageous or at least should be.

Bidh boladh a' mhairbh de 'n láimh fhalaimh (dowd), Thursday, 28 January 2021 18:25 (three years ago) link

Their discussion of the zero sum game approach to politics reminds me that yesterday I got lost in comment thread before realizing that I had just read a fox news article and the main take in there seemed to be coalescing around the idea that Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats allowed the riot to happen by ordering the Capital Police to stand down. The suicide was obviously because a Capital Police officer "knew too much". What Dems stood to gain by risking their lives and having one of those officers murdered during the last week that Trump was in office was never fully explained, but they all seemed to understand it. I'm guessing that they saw it as a 5d chess gambit - that Dems planned to take advantage of angry Trump supporters by letting them into the Capital after Trump's speech, which allowed them to call it an insurrection and draft articles of impeachment so they could prevent him from running again. But now the Republicans have recognized all of this for the charade it was and are outsmarting the the Dems by voting against convicting Trump. It isn't some Q crazy secret history or hidden voter fraud that makes Biden illegitimate, it's just how they see politics as usual -everything that happens must come down to the battle between us and them and is driven by projection that the other side must be approaching it the same way, there is no such thing as win-win or even compromise from this perspective.

The 35% who disapprove are not disapproving his actions, but his existence.
