Don't know anything about the guy but I just noticed on wiki that he was married 7 times - 8 if you included the wife he married twice - and he separated from his last wife in 2019. Larry King that is.

Yeah. He was a workaholic. Didn’t have much time for the domestic stuff.

WaPo headline is funny.

If you were caught up in the O.J. story in '94 and '95, his show was ground zero. I'm sure it would all happen on Twitter now.

yeah, larry was one of the last of his kind

Good thoughts here on that:

What I wrote about Larry King in 2015: His crusty Jewish vaudevillian affect was a throwback to early TV, & it set him apart from everyone else in broadcasting. Also he was just a weird dude, fascinating to look at & listen to. Broadway Danny Rose meets Dada. pic.twitter.com/dbc24514f3

As you'd expect, lovely tribute from Piers Morgan

Larry King was a hero of mine until we fell out after I replaced him at CNN & he said my show was ‘like watching your mother-in-law go over a cliff in your new Bentley.’ (He married 8 times so a mother-in-law expert) But he was a brilliant broadcaster & masterful TV interviewer. pic.twitter.com/1JsXeeZYEk

King was a close friend of my husband's lawyer--they both had TV shows in Miami. Never got to meet him, though.

larry used to frequent a bookstore i worked in in DC. he was kind of a dick. one time he came up to the info desk and snapped at me ‘i need five copies of my book’ and i deeply regret lacking the presence of mind to reply ‘okay . . . what’s your name’

RIP Larry King. My impression of him was so gravelly I damaged my vocal cords and eventually needed surgery.

We eventually met and someone told him the story. He teased me about it, of course, but later, pulled me aside and asked, very sincerely, “You’re okay now, though?

lol just remembered Larry King asking Sharon Tate's sister how she could still feel comfortable being in touch with Roman Polanski even after he murdered her sister. RIP to a real one, we'll never see his like again.

Re: Hank Aaron, I read his autobiography when I was in 2nd grade and absolutely obsessed with baseball, and there was a section that published some of the hate mail that he received. It was the first time I'd ever been exposed to such vile, racist shit, and I credit that book with giving me some of my moral compass re: racism as I've aged. RIP.

I used to show a section of Ken Burns' Baseball to my classes on Jackie Robinson's birthday, one that included some of the hate mail he got. I was always a little uncertain if this was a good idea for a primary class (anywhere from grade 4 to grade 7), but I'm glad I did. You can't begin to appreciate Robinson or Aaron unless you're confronted with the full extent of what they went through.

on hank aaron and apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but for a UK poster like me, this peanuts strip is one of those times where you get a potent, exciting sense of US cultural artefacts (something slightly pynchonian about it), that US-ness which feels thrilling/liberating/powerful and (again for a UK poster) exotic/foreign.

Hank Aaron played a role in "Peanuts" during his historic run to the all-time home run record. Snoopy at one point was trying to beat him to it. There's a long series on this, which included this strip from August 9, 1973. pic.twitter.com/cQi0xkURXY

It included hate mail of the sort that Aaron had received and had been publicized in the media. pic.twitter.com/Y5tCqfQHAC

I think he was poor health for while now, he was a good one and definitely worth another RIP

Yes, he stopped his regular gig at Cafe Loup several years ago because of his Alzheimer's.

That obit is very good, worth the wait.

Mr. Mance also taught in the B.F.A. jazz program at the New School from the late 1980s until 2011, and toured with 100 Gold Fingers, a jazz ensemble consisting of 10 pianists, including Marian McPartland, Hank Jones and Tommy Flanagan

He was from Chicago, but I always kind of classed him with these last twp and the other great Detroit players of that generation. Glad I got to see them play.

Joseph Sonnabend. A hell of a life and a story, as this thread shows.

I’m deeply saddened to learn that Dr Joseph Sonnabend, one of the most important figures in the history of AIDS, died yesterday. I spent time with him in 2018 for one of the last interviews he ever gave. Let me tell you about this man and what he did: 1/https://t.co/XSPEfZKzBr
